Hampton: "Everybody thinks McLendon is a small dude. He is a big, strong guy. He can be dominant.".

    Kaloby-
"My camp phenom through three padded practices is Steve McLendon. The guy is virtually unblockable right now."

Does anyone else feel like they're keeping a dirty little secret?? I feel like I'm walking around with a hundred dollar bill in my pocket. If Ta'amu pans out we'll be spoiled at the NT position for another 12 years.

maybe cut Hampton and and send his money over to Wallace. It won't happen but, maybe it should.

Got to see what that translates into as far as taking on the double-team in real games. If teams have to double him then it's all good. If they can get away with less and use his aggression against him....

They have the money to sign Wallace without cutting anybody, and so the issue is not that they need to make more money. The issue is that they don't want to give him more money. So there's no need to cut anyone.

That said, if they were going to, there are waaaay more people that should go before Hampton. Just because the youth movement is promising doesn't mean he's useless. He's still a beast of a player, and it's doubtful Ta'amu will be nearly as effective as Hampton in 2012. In addition to that, he can provide valuable experience and teachings to the youngsters in a way a coach may not be able to do. It's been reported that he's embraced a teaching role. He'll do a great service to the team.

while i think casey should finish out here, we only need Moo to be as good as hoke, not casey this year. if reports are accurate, mclendon is unblockable in practice. having to be double teamed, doesn't always have to come from a bullrush up the gut by a huge man. quick through the line can cause a lot of headaches for an o-line too. against the 3 step drop qb's, this is a far better way to play it. we know we are going to see alot of it against us this year. casey takes us back to our old base defense which with these new quicker, man to man corners being inserted, we are slowly moving from that old base 3-4 style to more of an attacking 3-4 style. alot of that is to disrupt that 3 step drop and counter that zone blocking style. a quick nose will help both. i can't wait til we get to see some glimpses of the speed added on this defense this year. speed kills.

Not sure what Hampton can teach these guys. Casey has already admitted not too long ago that he never concerned himself with technique or watching film. He would just use his strength and weight to bully the guys in front of him.

I do actually. I love the guy, but he's got a reputation for a weak work ethic.

I meant do you really believe he plays with less than exceptional technique? There's a lot more to the position than size. If there wasn't, everyone would have a great nose tackle on their team because guys that large, even guys that strong are not all that hard to find. I'm not saying I want Ta'amu following Casey's eating habits and offseason workout regimen, but on the field Hampton is a great technician and I find it hard to believe you don't think there's anything he can teach to a massive rookie nose tackle like Ta'amu. I think Ta'amu can learn a ton from him.

Plus, I consider that more of a bonus anyway. I have loads of confidence in McLendon and I like Ta'amu long-term, but I don't know what he'll offer this year. Casey is hurt right now, but the last we saw of him he was still the best nose tackle on the team. Whether McLendon has surpassed him or not remains to be seen, but I want Casey here and on the field regardless. He can only be of help to us.
