krieder needed cut , he had had it and was hurt alot then, he never played much after that if at all. it was time. kuhn was here for one year and wasen't a ball of fire as a FB. krieder was still here that year. we had to many RB's to keep him if i remember and he was beat out by davis. summers never really took to that role and was hurt his rookie year.[/quote:2ev5xil1]
They chose Davis over Kreider. It doesn't mean he beat him out, it means they chose him. Tomlin could choose you over Troy for SS this year. Does that make you better?

That's my whole point!! They picked garbage over gold. You can't use the fact that the garbage was chosen to prove it's better than gold. If it was, I wouldn't be cranky now, would I? :frustrated:  :roflmao: :(

I don't see how you can defend those personnel decisions.

krieder was done as a player. we had beat him to death. at the time they didn't have much choice he couldn't stay healthy. he was not the player he was no matter how much you think and wanted him to do good. he was fools gold at that time. kuhn was not that good of a FB either. he was a better runner at that point then he was a blocking FB. sorry you don't like the answer but it was what it was at that time. we had no room for both of them at that time. niether were very good as a blocking FB at the time but davis had more expierience. dear God i didn't pick them. LOL  here is also a read from our coach. :http://pit.scout.com/2/1201233.html

I agree with mac on this one. I was annoyed when we let Kuhn go, but his potential was as a runner. I think Davis was often seen in terms of his "potential" which gave him the nod over Kreider at that point. Unfortunately, the potential never materialised...

I'm gonna have to agree with PWP on this topic. An for all you non believers in Redman, I will have to agree with PWP and say, he was right. As far as someone saying that PWP has a I told you so attitude, thats unfair. He has been a Redman fan from day one. As far as him being right, he told you so but most people didn't believe what he was saying, but he was right so give him his props.

Also, I have been a big Redman fan from day one just like PWP. My reason was that I live right down the street from Bowie State where Red went to college at. Also, I know the Coaches that coached him in college, I coached with them before. I knew about him from living in this area. The misfortunes that happened to him in high school was the only reason why he didn't play division I college ball and the reason why he wasn't drafted. Other then that, he would have been drafted at least by the third round.

The other thing that I know will happen is that he will be a 1000 plus yard rb with 10+ tds. If anyone thinks that he will not accomplish that, you are wrong. Do you want to bet. If he stays healthy, he will at least reach those numbers. Also, I don't think Mendenhall will come back and regain his job. I know that the job will be Redman's from now one. Infact I don't think the Steelers will resign Redman. If Mendenhall starts out on the PUP and Redman and the rest of the RB's get the job done, I don't see Mendenhall coing back at all. They will not interupt the chemistry or the rotation of the group. Redman, Rainey, Batch, Dwyer. and Clay. Thats the group who will start and finish the season IMO. Why interupt a success rotation!

I like Haley, I like his system, and I like the players who Haley will fit his sysstem around these players. The offense will be successful.

Now, as far as Mendenhall is concerned, I never really like him because I felt that he was soft. He definently doesn't have the heart that Redman has. He is a dancing machine looking for a clear place to run and goes down on first contact. He was finished when Ray Lewis broke his collar bone in his rookie season. Redman is going to get in the hole and put his shoulder down and get as many yards as he can. Not Mendenhall. After seeing Bettis run for so many years and seeing his heart, I can't believe that so many of you like Mendenhall. He is half the man as Bettis was. Now seeing Redman run, you can clearly see his heart but you like Mendenhall who has never been compared to Bettis. He can't come close but Redman can even though he is not as big as Bettis was. But its heart that matters and Redman has that, Mendenhall doesn't. Mendenhall has that soft label and you know it.

After Redman proves that he is the man during the six weeks that Mendenhall is on the PUP. Lets just see what the Steelers do. They might bring him back because he is better then Dwyer or Clay, but not to take over as the starter froom Redman. Redman is going to take care of that!

I'm hoping he's right but the season needs to play out before you can make that assertion. And make no mistake, if Mendy was healthy, he'd be the feature back going into the season, not Red.

You've made posts like these so many times, and had so many responses like the one I'm about to give, I'm not sure there is really any discussion to be had here. We'd just be going over old ground.

You feel Mendenhall is soft. I get that. What I don't ever see is anything to really support your claim other than to constantly assert "he's always dancing!" and "he has no heart!" To make out that an RB is that bad and afraid of contact, yet still remains the starting RB of an NFL team - the Pittsburgh Steelers no less - is so obviously an exaggeration it makes the rest of your points look bad. Even talking about comparing Mendenhall to Bettis is just silly. They are completely different types of runners. (Comparing Redman is also not the best idea, but I can see where you're going with that)

And, as TomlinEra said, it's not that people are anti-Redman - it's that they are waiting to see, and in the meantime being wary of exaggeration.

Here's the thing: it's not like we're in a case of Maddox versus Roethlisberger over who should start. We have one fine starting RB, who's injured, and a great back up RB who may well step up given the chance to start. Sometimes I wonder if people feel the need to turn this into an either/or argument simply because we're on the internet or something...

Play, I love Redman...he's a beast and has heart that can't be taught. You deserve a big "you 'da man" for your Redman Prophecies on the old board. I remember the '09 camp very well and your Redman predictions, while perhaps being a little overly optimistic, turned out to be pretty spot on. Having said that...
I don't think he'll be seeing the kind of yardage you are predicting. Not because I don't think he'd be capable under the right circumstances and in the right system, but that I just can't see it happening this year. Mendenhall is going to be back likely by week 4, and barring a major setback, will likely be the feature back. If not, he'll at least be sharing a heavy amount of the carries.

You're probably going to hate me for saying this, but you're not likely going to see a whole lot more of gap schemes or angle blocking under Haley than you did under Arians. I've watched so much Haley film that I dream about it. No kidding. I know Kug said in an interview that he thought Haley preferred the gap schemes, but what I see is a healthy variety of varying run blocking schemes. I think I saw more zone blocking schemes than anything else, and I don't think I saw any gap calls in conjunction with Play Action. I do know that Coach Kug is a fan of the Gap System. He did a lecture at the 2011 COOL clinic last spring. So, I guess what I'm saying is that- sure, we'll see it, and we may see it more than we have in the past couple years, but I don't think we'll be seeing it as much as you are hoping for.

As far as Red's salary goes, I can't see him getting that kind of paycheck...not here anyway. I'm arguably his number two fan though, so I'm rooting for him to have a break out year.

Yes I have made post like this before and its my right to say what I feel. I'm not going to change my feelings about Mendenhall being soft and having no heart because you don't like it or agree with it. Let me make it clear for you as I say it again, Mendenhall is soft and has no heart, is always dancing and looking to get out of the way. What did you see when he ran?, What games were you watching? I'll tell you what I saw. I saw him doing exactly what he does best, dance and get out of the way. I never saw him run anybody over or punish people. Now, on the other side of things with Redman, his rep and mentality is that he is a tough physical runner who is not affraid to put his shoulder down and run somebody over. I think we can all agree that Mendenhall does not fit that bill.

Coach Tomlin named Redman, Redzone Redman for a reason. Let me give you one example from the Cleveland game last year at Heinz when Arians ran Mendenhall 4 times from the 2 yard line and he couldn't get in, while Redman stood on the sidelines watching Mendenhall's futile attempts. Is that a good enough reason for you? So if you get that, then why are you tripping about my post? Yes he is the running back for the Pittsburgh's but not one of the best ones.

When Redman goes out and kicks butt this year, you will understand. Everyone will understand what PWP is talking about!

Yeah, thanks Hurtin. Not sure why I said week 4.
Week 7 or 8 is when we'll likely see him.

I disagree pretty strongly with what you say about Mendenhall. I could provide a plethora of videographic evidence from throughout the season refuting what you say about him, but I don't think it would help change your opinion. The shot he took from Gocong on the first down attempt would put most backs out of the game, but he got right back up and tried to hammer it in for the next three downs. On the next down, they pull Kemo and he falls down before he gets through the B gap. Would Redman have had more luck getting in on those four downs as opposed to Mendenhall? Maybe? Probably? I dunno...it's fun to speculate I guess. I do know that the Browns D deserves a lot of credit, and Bruce Arians deserves a heck of a lot more blame for that busted set of attempts than Mendy IMO.

:this!:  I'd say his statements are born out of dislike for Mendy over his 9/11 comments. And calling a RB soft is pretty much an oxymoron, it's one of the most punishable positions to play in the game. I don't think any RB can be "soft".

Thanks E for getting my back....I will start by saying I don't believe Mendenhall is soft per say.....I do believe he is a open field runner at heart...He does have the tools and talent to be a punishing runner,he just lacks that IT factor in that regards...

Redman on the other hand has more of that IT factor than most RB'Sin the league.....Redman's will and desire is the biggest difference between the 2 RB'S IMO...While one is faster and has great open field running abilty and the other has average speed and average open field ability he is leaps and bounds better than Mendenhall as a North and South runner....This leads me to my next point.....

The point being why ,,I don't understand why people think the days of the North and South runner is over......A great North and South runner is exacly what the doctor ordered......In the new era of the passing game Teams are putting more guys with better pass coverage skills than run stopping skills on the field......In a nut shell smaller/faster guys .....So why not use a Big Straight ahead runner to make them pay for investing to much in pass D ??

This is exactly why Redzone is the best fit....His style will force Teams to play a way they are really not built to play.......When they do this it will help the OL in pass protection and it will help Receivers to get open.......

The style of Mendenhall doees not fit these things.....He is a Zone runner which means he leans more on his Speed and Agility....This allows the D to keep pass stoppers on the field...Guys with more speed and good open field tackling....Which in turn Recievers have a harder time getting open.....Exactly the type of scheme BA tried to run and exactly why our O has underachieved,,,,,,The same reason that Mendenhall was the guy under BA and Redman was not given a real chance.......Redman is the man ,,,,and the best fit for this team and now that BA is gone and Redman will get his earned work he will prove that his work load should have been more all along....As a result the whole O will do better,as a Coach I know what Team really means.....Each part making the other parts better......

Yes, I seem to remember when we drafted him the big buzz was about how he read the field well and found the open spaces. So I don't think I particularly disagree here. I don't think that rules Mendenhall out of running between the tackles - he's far better than, say, Willie Parker was in that respect.

Again - I agree that it's important to have the option of a north/south runner. We all know how football is constantly developing in that sense, so it makes sense to be bucking the trend as much as following it. But as I've said before, I also think that as informed your posts are, PWP, you often don't give opposition DC's the credit they deserve. It's not like they're going to see Redman starting, throw their clipboards in the air and run away crying. (Well - we can hope, of course... ;) )

Anyways, as I've said before, my main hope for this year regarding RBs is that the coaches use our depth of talent sensibly, and starter/contract issues are saved for the office and not the field. There's the potential to run a seriously damaging one-two punch with Redman when Mendenhall gets back to health. That's my ideal situation.

I find it comical that things like a below average offensive line that was decimated by injuries, way too many turnovers by the offense, and a defense that was almost last in the league in takeaways are ignored. Of course it's much easier to just blame the scheme.

:roflmao: He does come across that way. And I'm not piling on here PWP or laughing at you because I too enjoy your insight, you know truck loads more about the X's and O's then I do but this is the NFL, it's not like we will be unstoppable if we run this particular scheme. TTF actually had a response to what type of scheme(s) we will run in another thread and that one seemed much more likely and not so one dimensional.

all you need to do is check the stats. mendy against ,..... lets say franco, bettis, parker and see where he stacks up. not to mention these guys had far better lines then mendy had in front of him and most had a FB. it may suprise most. look at the first 4 years and compare. bettis you can compare his first 4 or his first 4 here, it won't matter. check out the yards per carry and the td's scored. not sure what alot of people are complaining about. a couple of these guys are HOF'ers. mendy won't lose his job because of injury. MT doesn't do that. he'll have his shot to comeback. then they will evaluate him. we have other players to do the same with this year. (dwyer)(rainey)(batch) red may not get all the carries you think this year.

The questions about Mendenhall is....1 Is he injury prone? And 2 is he a fumbler? He has had 2 season ending injuries in the short time he has played here, does he condition himslf properly, or is he just injury prone? On the fumbles, he says he doesnt deserve that reputation because he never fumbled in high school or college, well, this is pro ball, and 1 fumble in a key game gets magnified a 100 times...James Harrison tore into him publicly for fumbling in the super bowl, and Tomlin has made him carry a ball around before and if anybody could knock it out of his hands he got fined a 100 bucks. I havent been impressed with him since he has been here, as a 1st round draft pick he should be living up to his draft status, so far I dont think he has....

The Mendy haters don`t like to talk about the facts as it doesn`t support what they`re saying. Mendy fumbled as a rookie. So did Adrien Peterson. Is AP a fumbler too? A lot of rookie RB`s struggle, and they tend to fumble the ball. Go look at other RB`s rookie years and you`ll see a pattern, that`s when they tend to fumble the most. Mendenhall has not had a fumbling problem since his rookie year. I don`t care if he had a fumble in the Superbowl, that does not mean he has a fumbling problem. You can`t just say because the game was so big that one fumble creates a fumbling problem.

As for him being injury prone, he`s been injured twice, and once was when he was a rookie and he got blown up by one of the harder hitting LB`ers in the league. The last injury was just a freak thing that happens sometimes. Mendenhall has proven he is not injury prone, and considering the state of our line and some of the big hits he has taken immediately after being handed the ball, I can`t believe he hasn`t been injured more.

I don`t understand why so many people hate Mendenhall. The game has changed, power backs aren`t used much anymore. Look around the league, the best backs are the explosive, fast and shifty type like Ray Rice, Lesean McCoy, Forte, MJD, Sproles, etc. Brandon Jacobs and Blount are pretty much the only two power backs in the league and they aren`t exactly superstars. The game has changed, and guys like Redman are no longer the answer.
