Well, the last time an NFL team had two ties in a season was 1973, before the OT rules. So my hypothetical tie between an 8-6-2 And a 9-7 team hasn't come up recently. If you want to argue that a tie shouldn't be a 1/2 win -1/2 lose, that fine.

The current rule has the 9-6-1 team finishing ahead of the 9-7 team. But the 8-6-2 team is tied with the 9-7 team.

Do you want it to counts ties the same as a loss? In this case a 9-6-1 team is tied with a 9-7 one. The 8-6-2 team is behind the 9-7 team. OR
Do you want to count a tie as a non-game? In this case, a 9-6-1 team finished ahead of the 9-7 one, but so is the 8-6-2 team.

I'm not sure what is 'fair', but somehow I think if the tiebreaks gave the 8-6-2 Steelers the AFCN over 9-7 Cincy, people around here would learn to live with it.

I haven't really thought very hard about it but I think I'd just make a rule that if one team has more wins than another then the team with more wins finishes ahead. If they are tied in wins then the one with fewer losses finishes ahead. Order of finish:
    9-6-1
    9-7
    8-6-2

Edit: Thinking more about it I guess that means that 1-1 is better than 0-0-2. I am ok with that.

    8wins/16games= .500
    9wins/16games= .560
    ---------
    0wins/2games=.000

    I am lost

    0-0-16

So a team could theoretically finish .500 without winning a game?

    Is this R. Goodell math?

Yes, and this predates Goddell, it's been true since the merger. A tie is a 1/2 win and a 1/2 loss.

You can say that a team could finish .500 by going 0-0-16 and never winning a game, and you're bothered by this. But alternatively, you could say. such a team ONLY finished .500 despite going undefeated.

How would you rather 'value' ties? Should a tie be a loss? With the 0-0-16 getting the first pick in the draft? Should it be a non-game? A team with one tie, would have its win% based on 15 games.
You can argue what's fair or not. But keep in mind ties are still pretty rare in the league, and don't affect standings much. But the recent OT rule changes are increasing the chance for ties.
