Lol snack, you're such a "ziggy homer"! I'll say it again... I'm glad he's finally getting into shape and hope it translates into a substantially better performance on the field. Lord knows his first 3 seasons, especially as a #1 pick, have been uneventful.

There's a huge difference between a top 10 talent and being the last pick in the first round. Ziggy could had easily been a 2nd round pick.

I know you're just messing with me, but I'm a wet blanket by nature and prefer accuracy and clarity to fun. So let's be realistic about it. This is the first Ziggy topic I've ever started, and it was only a follow-up to an earlier topic. I found the news relevant, and I don't think anything I said is untrue at all. I'm absolutely rooting for the guy and don't feel bad about that, as well as every other Steeler on the roster except for maybe one or two who I want to see replaced. And I'm sure on some level you're rooting for him too, like you say, although what I can't figure out is why you're so over-the-top critical of a guy that you claim to root for. But I keep my statements about Ziggy true and waaay less frequent (or don't you remember your fantasy-based signature, "Ziggy Hood gets owned on almost every play"?). I'm not "Such a Ziggy" anything compared to you.

    :dancing:

By the way, "uneventful" might not be the word you're looking for. Aaron Smith's career could be described with the same word.

Cool vid, most impressive to me was the movement and explosive power he displayed in the jumping drills.

Yeah I think this translates to on the field its not like he is just lifting he is doing actual drills at a very fast pace. Also ziggy has done a pretty good job when his number was called.

It looks like he's doing a bunch of balance, core, and agility drills. He for sure likes like he has the physical part down. Here's hoping the mental catches up. But I'm sure it will come with experience and playing time.

Haven't we all seen these work out warrior video's before?
He better shore up his production, then we can get serious about Ziggy.
Here is hoping Cam Heyward beats him out.

I will admit I am very critical of Ziggy Hood. I root for him to become the first round pick he was, it is painful to watch a team that just 2 seasons ago had given up less than 80 yards rushing a game and then Ziggy becomes a starter and the same team gives not only teams 100 yard rushing games but individual RBs. Arian Foster got 149 and Steven Jackson got 137 and he was on a team who had a back up QB and the players knew they were going to run the ball and not to mention the Broncos playoff game. Ziggy can't penetrate or shed a block after 5 seconds and so in order to stop the run we now need to put 10 guys on the LOS and prey they don't throw it. The common elelment is Ziggy, once he became the starter teams can now run at will and I know there are others involved but he sticks out because even an old injured Smith was holding his own.

No, "uneventful" is exactly how I would describe ziggy's performance during his career so far, and yes, as a life-long Steelers fan I'm rooting for him to step up his game. Aaron Smith on the other hand had a very eventful, near HOF career for us and in my opinion was most definitely a true impact player on our DL. I'm hoping hood or one of our other younger guys is able to step into and fill Smith's very large shoes.

P.S. Snack, you know I respect your opinions and enjoy our exchanges, especially about ziggy. I couldn't resist calling you out as a "homer" but want you to know it was intended to be good natured! :drinks:

I'm on the fence... I understand that none of that video automatically means he'll be a beast on the field...

But it does tell me that Ziggy is making his body his number 1 priority and it tells me he's not afraid to work hard. If he puts in the same effort on the practice field and in the film room, there's no way he won't improve, because the raw ability is there, he just needs to work to refine that.

Wow definitely look like he is seein some results.

If he is trying to improve balance that is good cause he needs to be an unmovable force on the edge ala Aaron Smith.

I always thought we were fitting a square peg into a round hole with him. From his college vid he looked like a DT that a team like the Eagles or Colts would like...a high motor smaller penetrating DT. His strength was getting up field and we are asking him to stand his ground and eat up blockers and stop the run, which is not what he was known for.

I just think he would be way more successful in a different system, but maybe he can be molded into a great one for us just yet.

Personally, I like Ziggy Hood. Here is another guy that I'm not sure what it is going to take him to impress some of you. Yes, he has made mistakes but he seems to, generally, do what is asked of him. Really, its kind of interesting to read through threads on here and take note of some of the things that people say. People want JH to get to the quarterback everytime and make plays in the backfield. At that same time, they want Woodley, Timmons, Snack, Kiesel and Ziggy to do the same thing, while throwing in the occasional Troy or someone else from the secondary. I guess in all my years I have never seen a NFL team get 7 or 8 people to the quarterback to make a sack, at the same time no less. Anyhow, Ziggy can always be better but, atleast, he is taking the steps to be that way!

Don't be silly. Any reasonable fan will be happy with those 7 players alternating sacks every play. Say, 28 pass attempts per game, 28 sacks per game, and 64 sacks per year per player!

This is the point for me, too. The basic facts are that he's bigger and stronger, and with 20 pounds less fat to carry, he'll be lighter on his feet too. He's eating better and feeling better. That stuff alone should make for a considerably better performance, even if he doesn't study one extra iota. But he's also talked about putting the same effort into watching film. He said he looked at his tape last year and didn't like what he saw. So he's taking steps to get better in all phases. So I think unless he gets injured, there's no way he doesn't have the best year of his career. If he changes his pass rush, we're looking at at least 5 sacks. I think that the worst case scenario is that he plays a little better and we're all satisfied with our new LDE of the future, and the best case scenario is a breakout season like Timmons had in 2010. The raw talent has always been there, he's just needed to find a way to get it out of his body and onto the field.

i think ziggy has transformed to fit his new situation. the size and weight he was , was good for an inside DT. that, everyone knew he was good at. playing DE in a 3-4 requires a little less girth and a little more stregnth and speed. he has worked on what he needed to to succeed in this role. his old way was stagnent in his new role. he also needed to work on hand fighting and pass rush moves. he looks like he's working on them. keeping o-linemen off off him and his swim and rip moves are getting quick. aaron smith was excellant at getting off blocks to make tackles. he used his hands very very well. ziggy needed this.

I'm with you on this snack, aftewr watching that video, there is no way that it doesn't translate onto the field. I am impressed with that workout. He should be a beast this year. I can't see a guy working that hard doing what I saw on that video and doesn't improve. The rest of the d-line should be working out with him.

If I was the owner of the team, that would be mandatory. Awesome, I think we will see a different Ziggy.

Join him? Harrison, Woodley, and Timmons are already playing at a high level. Ziggy's playing catch-up with these guys, not the other way around.

Of course you are correct, and I wouldn't change a thing about those guys, but it does beg the question... Ziggy said that he wasn't satisfied with his performance last year or the shape he was in, but even if he wasn't satisfied, he was still in at least decent shape. He had a reputation as one of the hardest workers on the team in the weight room. So if he can make this kind of transformation, how many other guys on our team can do the same? Harrison's already a freak beyond improvement. Timmons I think has settled into his body. Woodley is an elite player, but I think his body might have some room to improve. I am not one of those people that thinks he's fat and out of shape, or even shows up to camp that way. He's a streaky player but I saw no evidence of being slow or out of shape last year. Ziggy's playing catch up, but Woodley's body might befefit from a similar transformation. Not as drastic of course, because he doesn't have the fat that Ziggy had, but I bet he could shed some and bulk up at the same time, like what Ziggy did. One thing LaMarr doesn't have on his side is speed. A little more of that would go a long way for him.

Other guys... Jonathan Dwyer springs to mind. Marcus Gilbert, perhaps. I would say Steve McLendon, but he's a step ahead of me. Maybe the new guy, Ta'amu. I know he has to lose some weight.

This workout sets the standard.Another one that come to mind is the workout program that Ike,farrior, and others participated in.I don't care how good we think our players are...the front seven of our defense could all benefit from a work of this caliber.Jerry rice was the best at his position and his workout program was of this caliber.

I'm excited to see how this translates on the field. Dude's a beast in the weight room...let's see it on the field.

Essex made a pretty significant transformation this offseason. I agree with the names you mentioned...I'd throw DJ in there, too.
