Maybe they rescind the tag on bell cutting him loose opening up cap space , then trade for a quality player with a high draft pick

I will not rule anything out but I am thinking a long term deal with Bell is not gonna happen. We shall see but I have never seen the Steelers worry about next year when it came to the cap...........

And wouldn't he be due well north of $20 million at that point? Pretty sure the third year in a row you franchise someone the percentage of the top salaries you owe is 144% or some such. I don't see the Steelers being willing to pay that to a disgruntled Bell.

If they were willing to do that I'd think they would have simply not tagged him this year.

I agree and think Finney has played well enough to take his spot.

That would possibly be the single worst thing the FO could do.

Why would they cut possibly the single biggest trade piece we have on our team? Although he’s disgruntled and a prima dona, he’s young and one of the 1-2 best RB’s in the game.

If we just release him, not only do we not get a comp pick for him next year, we then also have to trade draft picks in your scenario.

Why not just make him part of the trade if releasing him is the route they want to go?

Highly unlikely scenario i know, but he has to get in the building first. Maybe the Steelers will begin to sour on him as he hasn't shown up for the team meeting today, few weeks down the line if he's still being standoffish maybe the team looks to improve the team via trade with a bit more cap is freed up as we go. I don't think they were going to anticipate Bell missing time passed the preseason. He is a once in a generation type of talent for sure, what you have said makes perfect sense

EDIT: He's not showing for a loooong time, if they like connor enough screw the comp pick, trade for a proven commodity

unreal... i'm flummoxed that owners would have agreed to such a clause in the CBA. I get that it's in there to force good faith negotiations. Hate it as a fan but I guess the owners hold most of the cards. Has anyone ever held out for the full 10 before?

I don’t believe I have ever heard of someone doing it.

Ultimately, I still don’t think you trade him unless the FO is blown away by a trade offer.

If they aren’t, make him come back and play after 10 weeks. We’d have him then for a playoff run.

It’s unreal and selfish how he told all the fans and teammates that he wouldn’t miss any games.

He really is a true prima dona. Good riddance after the year. I hope all 70,000 in Heinz field boo him week 11.

The second irks me... even in business there should be honor.

The first would be a win-win in my book. Sure i'd rather have him but a bird in the hand...

What makes anyone think he will run hard for this team if he does come back? He won't go after the EZ or the first down with the fear of getting hurt for his big payday to come.

Well part of me thinks that if he decides to play any of this years games he would have to try in order to solidify his future with another team

Honestly, the most sensible outcome would be to hold on to him, see if he is coming back at all.

Then at the trade deadline, see if the FO is blown away by an offer if he still isn’t back. I’m talking a draft pick and an impact player. May be some team would be stupid enough to do that to get him and not have to deal with contract negotiations with other teams.

If there is no such team, let him sit out until whenever he has to come back. Run him into the ground. If he isn’t running hard try to get him away from the team with whatever maneuver they have to do.

It still baffles me that some guys would rather "just get paid" vs playing for championships!
Its not like any of them are making chopped liver these days .
It just leaves a bad taste in fans mouths too(at least for me it does).

You are not alone in this thinking. There are many on this board and fans worldwide shaking their collective heads wondering why someone would care that much about making more money then he could spend instead of putting his head down and playing the game he loves ( or maybe he does not love the game)

No offense but I don’t see any sense in waiting on him any longer. The time for waiting is over. They waited all off season and he lied about showing up.

There’s really only 2 options now. You work out a trade with a team that he agrees to go to or you pull the tag and cut him loose. No way I’m letting him and his bad attitude back in the locker room to affect other players. He’s not going to play hard if he waits till week 10. By then Conner or Samuels is on a roll and you don’t bench them so he can play half assed football for 6 games and leave. He’s got to go.

I'm really not sure this means anything. Steelers have a self imposed rule that they don't restructure or doing anything with contracts after the season starts. So it could just be a "while we're at it" kinda thing.
