Kevin Colbert On Landry Jones Being Backup QB: ‘Well, That’s An Option’
    https://steelersdepot.com/2018/09/k...y-jones-being-backup-qb-well-thats-an-option/
"General Manager Kevin Colbert was asked directly if the plan was to go into the season with Jones as their backup quarterback. “Well, that’s an option”, he said, but added that Mason Rudolph and Joshua Dobbs “have shown signs that maybe they can be that person, that player as well, and that’s really a good thing”." Kevin, do the gutsy thing! Keep the kids and trade Jones. No risk, no reward!

"If the team truly believed that Jones was the only quarterback on the roster who could serve as the backup, then there would be no discussion necessary about whether or not he would be the backup, let alone whether or not he would be on the roster."

"The decision could ultimately be made by other clubs, however, depending on what sort of offers the team is able to field for Jones and Dobbs, both of whom have reportedly received some level of interest."

“What we have to do is try to figure out the best 53 and make those decisions based on not only abilities but availability, and who can help us beat the Cleveland Browns, and ‘can we have this player plus this player and that player’, and it’s really just a continued open discussion” that he admitted could go down to the cutdown deadline at 4PM."

"The fan consensus has clearly been that they should move on from Jones, even releasing them if they can’t find a trade partner, but the team has not entered a season with backup quarterbacks who have never thrown an NFL pass in decades."

    Poker Face!
Do you think Colbert is going to spell out their exact plans to the media?
I’m sure they’re entertaining trade options for Jones and Dobbs.
If you say Jones is our guy then everyone knows Dobbs is probably going to be cut and they can wait and get him for nothing. And the same if you say Dobbs is the guy.

    Come on

Hopefully the Landry Jones era taught them something, that your BU doesn't have to have NFL experience to be successful at it. If they had the guts with Jones, we wouldn't have had the Vick fiasco.

And another thing about this way overblown experience stuff. You can't have a BU that has never thrown a NFL pass but you can put your starter out there with never throwing an NFL pass? Come on man.

Dobbs earned the spot, it's ridiculous if they stick with Jones at this point.

Not completely ridiculous in my view (depending on what they got for Dobbs), but definitely not the best move all other things being equal.

Wasn't talking about trades, just flat out being cut.

The point (which I’m not surprised you missed) is don’t be so worked up that Colbert doesn’t tell you all the plans for the team.

It does come down to what other teams are offering for Jones and Dobbs. If a team makes the Steelers an offer they can't refuse, then one them is gone. I'd prefer to gamble on the Dobbs and Rudolph, since they appear to me to have a far greater upside. So I hope someone really needs Jones.

It's a good thing NFL GMs don't listen to the fans when it comes to personnel decisions .

People really haven't been fair to Landry Jones. He hasn't sucked as much as he's portrayed and has been a reliable backup QB. With all that said, he is in the final year of his contract and 29 years old.

Dobbs had a good arm strength, a good frame, and is a dual threat. He's still got three years on his contract, and it's kind of hard not to like the guy.

So it's a tough decision. We should find out soon.

Not always; I have seen where fan opinions were actually more wise than a GM a myriad of times. The fans were right when the majority wanted Kordell out but Rooneys couldn't stomach moving away from him after giving him (what was at the time) that truck load of money.

His statement is accurate. I wouldn’t want myself, you, steelersrule or any fan making personnel decisions. Sometimes fans get it right, doesn’t make them more qualified.

When GMs start listening to the fans they will end up sitting in the stands with the fans.

With the Panthers only keeping 2 QB's it wouldn't shock me if something wasn't in the works for Dobbs .he fits their offense perfectly.

GM's are just people; most of them are just "guys" and not all that smarter than a lot of fans. What? Who here would have done a worse GM job than whoever was pulling the trigger for the Browns the last 20 years?

We're not the Browns, are we? And GM's don't operate in a vacuum either.

Pretty close to it, unless you think GMs like Bill Polian merely get lucky everywhere they go. Talk about a track record: He built the 90's Bills (who went to four consecutive SB), the Panthers (who he got to the SB in just their 2nd year in existence), and the Manning Colts (who contended virtually every year that team existed).

Not close to it at all. Especially the draft where a whole bunch of people are included in the process.

GM's make the final decision but consort with others, especially the coach and owner before ever making a decision. At least the good ones do.

Also, back to the Browns, their biggest flaw is not being able to draft QB's as well as being too dysfunctional to groom them.
