He needs to go, like yesterday. I never liked this hire. At the time, pundits and fans alike were saying how Dick LeBeau's system was outdated and stale. So the steelers go out and fire DL, and promote his understudy using a poor man's Dick LeBeau system.

After I heard him talk at a presser, I thought he was a joke. There was no way this guy could orchestrate nor command an NFL defense. What did the FO see in him?

Only pre-season, but I'm judging him based on last year. I wasn't impressed with what I saw, but then again, our defence hasn't impressed me since 2010, so how much of that is on Tomlin and how much of it is on the DC, I have no idea.

not a fan either but here are the stats improving

    2013 13th ypg 14th ppg (lebeau)
    2014 18 ypg 18th ppg (lebeau)
    2015 21 ypg 11th ppg (butler)
    2016 12th ypg 10th ppg
    2017 5th ypg 7th ppg

had we had shaz with the rest of these folks our defense would be good enough

I know I'm getting old, but didn't we have one of the better defenses for the first half of last season, or am I just imagining that?

Not really... it was overrated. The D got torched by Bears and Jaguars RBs. D-line and LBs got used and abused.

Well, I'm not the one that usually cries this out after a loss. I had these reservations about him days after they promoted him but decided to give him a chance. I guess I've just seen enough to confirm what I've known all along.

I guess every defense in the league was overrated if we judged them bases on a handful of incidents instead of overall play. There's no doubt that the Steelers defense struggled at times last season. Overall I think they did a decent job. Especially when the offense struggled early in the season. Expecting a shut down defense every week isn't reasonable in today's NFL.

One of the biggest concerns going into this season is the speed at MLB. I hope how ever the coaches choose to combat that issue works out.

Nope. I've watched defenses who pass the eye test. Defenses that can make stops consistently on 3rd down. Examples: Vikings, Jaguars, Patriots, Eagles, Titans, Rams, Bills... just to name a few. Steelers D played well on 1st and 2nd down for the most part... 3rd down was terrible.

Get back to me after the conclusion of the 2018 season.

Way too early to decide if Butler should be on the hot seat and nevermind fired.

There’s the eye test, of course.

For info, the stats say Pittsburgh was 13th at stopping teams on 3rd down. Better than the Rams and Titans, 2 off the Bills.

    NE was 22nd.

Stats be damned regarding Titans and Rams. The Titans SWEPT the Jaguars in 2017. None of those teams gave up 45 points to Blake Bortles and the Jaguars in their home stadium. Plus, the Jaguars dominated Steelers earlier in the year, at Heinz Field.

I say Butler should of been firmly placed on the hot seat the second after his defenses abhorrent performance against the Jags. The same O that had trouble scoring 14 pts against the Buffalo D just the week before . Are you suggesting that if he follows it up this season with another poor D then he is on the hot seat for the following season? If so, I can't disagree anymore. This is his make or break season....

Our schedule was weak. The stats are inflated when you play our bad division from an offensive standpoint, a backup vs gb, a backup vs Houston, and backup vs indy. We played 2 good offenses and that was ne and the chiefs and when it mattered most vs ne they embarrassed the defense like they weren't standing there. We just have the chiefs number but that may change without check down alex.

Pats stop ppl on 3rd down when it counts. Like vs jax. They scored on them and moved the ball all game until the 4th qtr. Like vs atl in the sb. They just make plays when ti counts so stats with them are irrelevant. Rams just period have a better defense and they have s significantly better one now with Talib, Peters, and suh added.

I'll wait and see how this season plays out. The defense really wasn't as bad as people are making it out to be. If they eliminate the big plays, that will go a long way to cleaning things up. Those killed them.
