I know we have had a bunch of Wallace threads, but even the biggest Wallace fans should be getting a little shaky....I know Haley said that he will make sure Wallace gets the new O....Wallace has already missed a lot of time about 14 hours worth of on field time by my count.....

So I simply wanted to discuss the time table without bashing or being a Champion for Wallace....

Wallace has only had 1 NFL system, and he really only had 3 or 4 routes IMO.....I think he will have a huge learning curve for the Haley system....IMO I think the 30 hour mark is when he will start really falling behind......

How much time do you guys think Wallace can afford to miss before it starts effecting his future play ??

Not sure, but the WR position isn't as easy as many people believe it is. There is so much to learn and it sounds like Haley's system is going to rely on specific routes and precise timing, rather than just running ugly routes and hoping Ben can stay up long enough to find an open guy. It's going to be very, very different. Some players pick up playbooks quicker than others. I'm not sure which side Wallace falls into, but players who hold out don't often have great years. Look at Chris Johnson last year.

    That's a good question.

I am still an optimist, and say that as long as Wallace gets into camp he will be fine.

If he doesn't, but comes in late, I can't see either a) Wallace getting dropped down the depth chart to a bench-warming role because he's not 100% with the playbook; that's a long way to fall for the guy who's currently no.1; or b) Haley sticking Wallace out on complex timing patterns that he hasn't mastered. I would imagine some allowance would be made to get the most out of his talent, even with limited reps.

However, I still remain an optimist. There may be a new playbook, but OTAs are OTAs.

As long as he reports to training camp he will be fine, I'm not concerned yet.

I don't think it will hurt him at all. He will be at training camp he has the playbook and a route is a route. The lingo may be different but at the end of the day that's what it is. He did fine his rookie year so I'm not worried about that

You should read Pat Kirwin's book "take your eye off the ball." It explains in great detail about playing the WR position. It's not as simple as a route is a route. Routes change based on coverage, based on how many steps the QB drops back, among numerous other things. The WR position is not an easy position to learn, which is why most rookie WR's struggle and why they say it takes 3 years to truly learn the position.

Good book, that's in my library as well. Pat Kirwan knows his stuff...I enjoy his show on Sirius, too. The biggest problem for rookies is adapting to NFL coverage and struggling with release at the LOS. Wallace needs to learn the new playbook, which I'm sure he's working on right now. Who can know how diligently he's truly working on it, but I'd imagine it's a priority for him. I'm not concerned about him missing OTA's (though it'd be great if he were there), but I'll start getting concerned if he misses more than the first couple weeks of camp.

Yep, love Tim and Pat. Best football show on radio I think. Rich and Adam are great too, but Tim and Pat seem to have more conversation rather than just quick comments about callers opinions. Tim and Pat really break down the X's and O's, which is great.

I agree here. Jus make it before training camp.

I was wondering if Wallace could jus show up at OTA's but don't participate? Alot of players stand on the sideline just watching because of injuries or soreness or getting that "veteran treatment". I wonder if there is a rule against that.

My thoughts exactly. As long as he shows up in shape and can still take the top off of any defense he'll be alright. The intricacies will come as the season progresses.

:D I was thinking something similar - though it's a little unfair, as his route running was a lot better last season than the one before.

People, we are not splitting atoms here, this is football, that these guys
have been playing since they were in the midgets. Timing with Ben will be the key.

I see your point ,but Football is harder than a lot of peeps think.....Ben talked yesterday about how much we will be running the ball again....The reason this is so huge as I stated in other threads under BA he was never really asked to block....Then from there my take is they will run the routes of off the PA which Wallace has really never done much of as well..

Another problem for him is the Gap PA Option routes....I am sure that Haley has 1 option route at least on each passing tree, this is where every practice Rep gets very Important.....This is the time that Haley is able to Coach Wallace and to develop the trust between him and the QB....Last ,but certainly not least there is conditioning, being in Football shape.....Mini Camp is huge in this regard and if he misses it I don't think he will be in the shape he should be in...

The reason his coditioning is a huge factor IMO is the Physical and the Mental help feed off each other....If he is sharp mentally then he will be more sharp physically and vice versa....On the flip side the opposite is true,so no way can he be sharp without the reps also is he counting money instead of working out and learning the best he can?

I think he has a 85 to 90 % chance of having a stellar year at this point,as stated IMO after about 30 hours I think he drops off the more time he misses....

yep, this will hurt him with the new O. what they call in the huddle this year won't mean the same thing as it has the last 3 years. it's football, but it's alot more football then most on here know about. it's like middle school as opposed to college classes. we don't want mike and antonio running into each other on a dead run, because what " jet" meant before may mean something completely different now. just blocking on running plays, or decoying, or clearing out may have different names and add in how that changes with defensive alignment of a certain LB or SS or......... not easy to learn in a week. he's got a playbook, but nobody there to help him with it. i could get a book on rocket science, but doubt i can become a rocket scientist after reading it. it's just like them talking about the setback our young guys had by not having ota's and mini camps last year. it puts them behind.
