I know that this isn't Steelers related (actually we wouldn't have Steelers football if it weren't for these guys) but felt the need to post this because unfortunately, so many don't really honor or remember what truly happened on this day. There aren't too many of these heroes around today so thank them if you know of one or anyone who has served during WWII. So, today we mark the 68th anniversary of D-Day. Remember the sacrifices that these brave heroes made for our freedom on that infamous day. Below is a short tribute video to honor these heroes.

That's a great tribute, JD. If not for the bravery and selflessness of those young men, the world would be a very different place today.

Thanks for that link. One cannot possibly imagine how much resolve and bravery those guys had in their guts to carry out what they did.

Thanks for reminding me of this.... I hadn't really thought about today's date until seeing it....I had the fortunate opportunity 16 years ago to visit the Normandy beaches. Seeing it in person is powerful and really makes me truly amazed what was accomplished there. If you ever get the chance to go, do it!

Thanks to them and all who have served.

Actually I just got HBO GO on my 360 and for the 1st time I'm getting to watch Band of Brothers. I'm halfway through it right now but in the 2nd episode they fly in to jump out on to the beach. As we were watching it I looked at my wife and said "Man I'm so ashamed for how little I've actually done for this country". Thanks for reminding us what day it is. Besides the crucifixion of Jesus Christ I believe what happened that day in 1944 is the greatest act of heroism that will ever happen in the history of humanity. The only thing I believe that I've witnessed that can equal it is the footage of the firefighters rushing toward the World Trade Center on 9/11.

I loved Band of Brothers. Man did they do an awesome job on that or what? What those men did on D-Day makes me proud to be an American for sure. :applaud:

Yeah it's awesome! I'm almost to the end of it and then I'm gonna watch The Pacific. Have you seen that one? I've heard it's pretty good too. You know a series has to be great when it can even make a guy who used to be in New Kids on the Block seem like a tough guy. Lol.

Both were great but I enjoyed Band of Brothers more. I think maybe because it's contained to just that story and group of soldiers whereas Pacific is all over the place with characters and storyline.

My favorite part of Band of Brothers was Bastogne, a battle I wasn't even aware of until I watched that, what hell those soldiers went through. As for D-Day, I thought Saving Private Ryan was an awesomely powerful opening scene that captured the moment pretty well, and that was just a movie, can you imagine if you were there for real?

I've never seen The Pacific, but I have BOB on Bluray, and I think it's great. I actually watched Saving Private Ryan last night because of this thread. I hadn't watched it in a long time, and I forgot how powerful it was. That battle scene in the beginning is epic.

Yeah, Spielberg did his homework, interviewed vets and got their input to what was going on on that beach. He wanted it as real as possible. One of the things he made it a point to do is how soldiers who had been shot fell to the ground or acted after being shot, none of that over dramatic hollywood crap, it made for a very powerful visual.

Yeah Saving Private Ryan is incredible! I've heard that when that movie came out that ww2 vets would watch that and weep uncontrollably. Band of Brothers is pretty dang realistic. The hardest thing for me to stomach on there so far, and I have 3 episodes left, is when that guy gets shot in the throat in Bastogne and they have to leave him there to die in the cold. Man that was so sad. I also love when Spears runs through the whole German Batallion and then runs BACK! That was epic! Every year on Veteran's day at my church we have a special service to recognize all the local vets. Last year I told one of our deacons which was in Vietnam that I thought the ww2 soldiers were the biggest American heroes of all time and he TOTALLY agreed. I'm just not sure America pumps out men like that anymore. But we're still the best in the world.

Spielberg did BOB too, that's why it's so realistic and the Spears scene was great, even more so because it actually happened. And I agree about our WWII Vets, not sure why but I always felt that way too. Not taking anything away from any soldier who has ever been in battle, all wars are brutal.

Thanx for the reminder, JD.
I hope that NONE of the brave men and women, who have given their lives, or put them in danger, so that we can have the freedom we so often take for granted these days, is ever forgotten!
