But the playoff game showed how fortunate we were to be 13-3 last yr..

Butler isn't even top 10 at his position and his claim to fame is one play which was arguably the greatest play in sb history. He constantly gets BURNED and ROASTED.. You act like they sat deion sanders.

No, it showed that we didn’t match up well against the Jags, and showed if you give the ball away numerous times unnecessarily it’s difficult to win.

Come on guys.. All this negative stuff.. I always start out extremely optimistic so I am going to say 12-4 as well.. New OC and DB coach. Improved secondary. NE getting worse lol

I like our chances. I will remain hopeful

We have a lot of unproven pieces in place that may or may not pan out:

    Bostic at ILB
    Burnett at S
    Washington at #3 WR
New OC and DB coach like you said
Primadonna RB on franchise tag that may sit out a few games

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the Steelers started out 1-3. As far as the Patriots are concerned... nothing would make me happier for them to implode, but I've been waiting for years and it hasn't happened yet.

So we dont matchup well with the jags or Pat's. The two best teams in the AFC based on last postseason. Hmmm...

No. His impact on the game wouldn't have made a difference. He was embarrassed last yr in the sb. I can name several corners I'd rather have than him. He's not that good.

I don't follow - what does this have to do with your first point about the Jags game "showing" we were lucky to be 13-3?

12-4 sounds about right to me.. +1/-1 I think we are in that 11 to 13 win season.

Because we werent good in terms of beating the cream of the crop of the AFC. We beat the lesser of the AFC. With that putrid defense we had we were lucky to be 13-3 but almost every team is lucky in each year so that goes either way but our problem is when we have luck we dont cash in ultimately like ne does when they get lucky.

Ok. But regular season and post-season are different (marathons versus sprints etc.), so not sure the post-season is representative of the regular in that sense. Play-offs can highlight deficiencies, for sure, but note sure they tell a story about the regular season.

Unlike New England, clearly, who sailed past the best of teams by huge margins of... no, wait...

This is the bit I'm not following. Were we lucky or not?

Or do you mean that NE get lucky when it counts - i.e. the play offs, the decisive games, etc. and we tend to save our best for the less meaningful games?

I cant name one elite contender we have beaten in the NFC or AFC. I'd have to go back the last 2 years but we havent. And dont compare us to the Pat's. They've been to what 3 sbs in the last 5 years?

And it was still a bone head move not to play him.

The Chiefs, Falcons and Vikings are the best all-around teams we've beaten over the past 4 years. Seahawks, Patriots, Jaguars, Eagles have whooped us.

I guess we can throw in the Ravens, too... since they play well against Steelers even when they are in a down year.

I find it very difficult to use the words "lucky" in the same sentence as 13-3

Most certainly something to consider. We are unproven on the defensive side of the ball however I feel like we are drafting the future. Yes we do not know if these guys will pan out but I like our chances. Bell is not going to sit out and risk 800K per game and his future. If it is his last year in the Burgh which we all believe it is then it would behoove him not to play and illustrate to would be teams which have an interest to show what he can do.

I think the Vikings just caught people off guard last yr. Now if we beat this Vikings team with an actual QB then I'll write home about that. Yeah we have dominated the chiefs but they have proven to be frauds too. The Falcons win is respectable.

I guess the 2007 16-0 Pats had a better season than the 2007 9-7 giants..

I'm trying to follow the argument here.

You said that our play-off loss showed that our regular season record was lucky. I.e. that we didn't deserve it, based on our play-off performance.

You say here that the 16-0 Pats loss in the Superbowl showed that they were unlucky. I.e. that they didn't deserve to lose the SB, based on their regular season record.

This seems like a double standard - surely it's easier to just say that one play-off game is not representative of an entire regular season?

No I used your logic that regular season record equates to anything. Who cares everyone last yr failed except philly. Having a 13-3 record and then wetting the bed in the playoffs vs a team WITH A WORSE record just proved the record was flawed. You didnt validate it by winning it.

To add... Steelers were beaten handily, TWICE by a team with a worse record in their own home stadium.
