I still lay the blame for most poor officiating on the complexity of some of the rules now, and the dominance of challenge reviews, rather than the people themselves.

More than this is the fact that part of enjoying football is enjoying screaming at the refs.

Once you accept that refs are just human beings, at the end of the day, and not superhuman robots who can see eveything in slow motion from all angles, then a) their fallibility is part and parcel of the viewing experience and b) replacements probably won't make that any better or worse.

I'm saying all this in the safety of the off-season, of course. First bad call to go against us when the season starts, and I reserve the right to retract it.

Are the Refs Union? If the refs are Unionized, the players have every right to refuse to play if the league is going to use scab refs, interesting turn of events here......

LOL. You think the millionaire players are going to jeopardize their fortunes because there are replacement referees? At the end of the day Money talks and BS walks.

the players are anything but a true union. Playimg would be like crossing the line and you just dont do that.

 LOL, exactly, those players could care less about who is unionized and who isn't. Yeah, lets have star players sit out and jepordize our season all for some hack referree's gripe over a contract. Maybe we can get James Harrison to come out in support of the refs, voice his displeasure with hiring replacements and refuse to play. Then when the real ones come back maybe they will cut him a break as a trade off and actually start throwing some flags when he is being held on every damn play.

Seriously, what really needs done, is for the NFL to hire fulltime refs. Not some 70 yr old man who is losing his sight and going senile that does this job part time.

Yep, a National Football League ref can make anywhere from $25,000 to $70,000 a season. Huh? What do you mean when you ask wouldn't at $70,000 make it a full time job? An NFL ref is a part time job.

Saying it's $25K-/$70K is misleading. The very top guys who have been head refs for 20 years make $70K. The average is something like $27K, barely over $25K.

Full time, part time, whatever. If players who never see the field in their whole careers need to make a minimum of $400K, the refs deserve a hell of a lot more than what they get now. This "hobby" stuff is BS. I've heard, "Oh, they do it because they love it. They all have other jobs anyway, this is just a hobby for them, so they're lucky to get paid anything." That's such a load of crap. They're penalized for liking the sport? How about we take away 80% of Heath Miller's salary because he loves what he does, and give it to Albert Haynesworth, because it's just a job to him? They have the most critical jobs on the field, and it's not easy, and it's getting harder. It's insulting what they pay these guys, considering what they/we demand in return. The league is overflowing with money and everybody knows it. They need to get paid what they deserve (at least proportionately compared to players, who are overpaid). How about they pay them enough to make a good living, and then if they still want to be lawyers in their spare time, that'll be up to them?

Well, I'm just saying that they make between that much. Yes, depending on how long they have been in the league, they make between $25,000 and $70,000. Obviously, their salary will be higher the longer that they have been in the league. NFL refs need to be full time, it would not only hold them more accountable for the calls that they make but also require more dedication to the position. There needs to be some kind of accountability as well for missed calls, bad calls etc. by a review panel. I agree with you on what they should be paid but they need to be only hired as full time refs. Refs and umpires in other sports are mostly full time positions and they are paid accordingly.

Officials in other sports pull down more loot, but they have much more grueling schedules...

    • Baseball. According to MLB.com, MLB umpires get around $120,000 when they start out in the big leagues, and senior umps can earn upwards of $300,000. Between spring training, a 162-game schedule, and the postseason, being an MLB ump is a job that takes up most of the year.

They are, however, well cared-for while on the road. Each ump gets a $340 per diem to cover hotel and food, and when they fly, it's always first class. Working a full postseason can tack on an extra $20,000, plus expenses. They also get four weeks of paid vacation during the regular season.

These guys hang onto their jobs, too; on average, there's only one opening for a new big league ump each season.

    • Basketball. National Basketball Association refs are similarly well compensated. They earn anywhere from $100,000 to $300,000 for an 82-game season. There are some nice fringe benefits, too; when referee Tim Donaghy admitted to helping gamblers fix games, the NBA asked that he repay other benefits he'd pulled in over the course of his 13-year career, including $750 worth of sneakers and $4500 worth of free tickets.

    • Hockey. If you can skate and survive the occasional lockout, National Hockey League ref is hardly a bad job. Refs make between $110,000 and $255,000 while linesmen earn from $72,000 to $162,000.

TO needs a job. hoke. farrior. smitty. hines. i think these guys should be the next refs when their playing days are over. it keeps them in shape. pays them. most think they can still play at this level. they know what to look for. instead of bankruptcy for other players, they should put them in this situation. it would make more sense then a 65 year old investment banker doing it on weekends.

TO would probably introduce celebration dances for official's, when they make particularly tough calls on the field.

"They need to get paid what they deserve (at least proportionately compared to players, who are overpaid)."

Well, just who is it that decides what they deserve? You're not espousing "...from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs...", are ya comrad?

My point is that they deserve a hell of a lot more than what they're getting, because when you compare the work they do with the work the players do, the difference in money should not be that huge. I'm not talking about hours worked (although they work a lot more than 3 hours a week like some people think), I'm talking about work and importance to the game. I absolutely think they deserve more than some players out there, but that's where it gets complicated because the players are so grossly overpaid. Paying them $1 million per year would be too much, even though that would be more in line when compared to the players' salaries. The real solution is to pay the players less because they make way too much, but that will never ever happen. So I'd just be happy if they paid the refs enough to survive comfortably without another job.

By the way, have any of your repressed homosexual tendencies scratched the surface yet? When they do, just roll with it. Or if things are getting hot, away from it  Keep me posted. I know a few guys, and if you pm me a picture, I might be interested myself ;)
