I think it might be a good move for him. Originally I thought he’d be a better SS and slot S, but maybe having less responsibility around the LoS will help him out. We need a big year from Sean if we want to go far

He plays good as a strong safety, as he plays well up on the line of scrimmage. That said he should do fine at free safety.

What me and mac daddyo stated all last season.

Both Mitchell and Davis should have been switched before the start of the 2017 campaign as much of Mitchell's abilities had become more accustomed to being a Strong Safety. Only major reason I can see why it was not was likely due to the fact that Davis still was not efficient in communicating and relaying information to the rest of the secondary yet.

Now with three years under him, look for that to change. For that matter, look for Terrell Edmunds to turn some heads come the Preseason and nevermind OTA's.

In the NFL, maximizing your strengths is key. For Pittsburgh, a once heavily critiqued area just might become the defense's most powerful assest.

As you said, Sean Davis has fared well as a Strong Safety. However, by drafting Terrell Edmunds, they have added even more physicality on the back end; Sean Davis being that "striker" as a Free Safety. Combine that with Sean's underrated range and the secondary is far stronger now than it was last season.

One more aspect that is being overlooked. Sean Davis was supposed to go into the 2016 NFL Draft as a Safety but due to Maryland's issues at cornerback, he had to step into that role instead; his subsequent fall no less.

In short? Sean Davis is the starting Free Safety and Morgan Burnett is the starting Strong Safety... for now. Once Terrell becomes more accustomed of the NFL speed, trade the spots of Burnett and Edmunds; Burnett now being the third safety.

I’m trying to figure out if we are stocking up talent at safety, or if we just have a lot of mules in the Kentucky Derby?

    Seemed appropriate today.

Kentucky Derby, Cinco de Mayo and a Penguins game. I see Tylenol in my future.

Yeah I don't think Davis has the makeup of a SS or being in the box.

I think when we took him we had a glaring hole at SS and the Steelers really liked his athleticism so that is where he ended up.

I think his athleticism is better served at FS and with Mitchell now gone the move makes sense.

Hopefully he can excel there. He needs to start playing some high quality ball.

    I believe he can.

Honestly, I believe the initial plan was to have him transition to that as soon as Mitchell was done. Only major reason why I stated 2017 was due to the fact that, having a year under his belt, Sean would be more comfortable in calling plays and communication within the secondary.

Sadly though, that was not to be the case.
