They signed the guy they picked at #21 overall, 3 spots ahead of us. The salaries are slotted, so with every pick around us that gets signed, our signing gets easier.

Per Steelers Depot : Sean Spence 4 year deal should come in at about $2.6 million and include a signing bonus of around $500K
Per Steelers Depot : 2012 cap hit for Spence should be about $520K there about

With the 21 pick also only getting 3 years guaranteed money, that would mean the same for DeCastro...3 years guaranteed. His agent was hoping that all 4 years would end up in the guaranteed range.

Am I the only one that feels like, forget the cheap rookie contract followed by the $60 million one in 4 years, and just sign him to a 10 year deal right now? Save us in the long run! With the "sure things" of the world you always wish that's what you'd done, and this is as sure as it gets.

I'm guessing it's not allowed though.

I'm not worried about that. I'm sure he'll love it here. It's just a money thing. If we were allowed to make any contract we wanted, we could sign him to a 10 year, $50 million contract. He'd know he might possibly be giving up some money down the line, but it would just be too much money to pass up without risking injury. Meanwhile, we never have to pay him $10 million per year or lose him to FA.
