If they had a better player, they wouldn't keep him.

My question is, what financial incentive is there to let him go now? Wait until training camp and if there are better players, so be it. If he's better, than keep him.

I was just thinking earlier today. With the loss of Gay and Farrior, I thought to myself...there isn't a scape goat type player left on the roster ...............................................................................................................................................................................................and then I remembered Foote

I like Foote, he's smart, knows the system, and the coaches have faith in him. The only reason he catches a bad rep is because he's is surrounded by pro-bowlers. I believe he's an average/solid player but surrounded but such high caliber players his "average-ness" stands out. That make sense? When Troy plays down in the box that's 3 pro-bowl LB's and an all world safety playing up on the line, Foote is the red-headed step child. When he went to Detroit he lead the team in tackles. Here we're screaming to cut him because we believe Sly Stevenson and Morty Ivy can be better.

Excellent post and one which I completely agree with. My only concern going into this year is his age. When a Pro-Bowl player starts losing a step they may become average or slightly above, but still get the job done pretty well. An average player loses a step and they become a liability.
I suspect we will get one more good year out of Foote where the coaches and players trust him and he gets it done.

We will quickly find a new scapegoat if one of the corners starts getting torched rather consistently. Something tells me that could be Lewis.

true, but he was worst in the league against the pass as far as LB'ers go. big difference in the league now. tackles 5 yards downfield also don't help much, but they still count as tackles. we got rid of earl holmes here when he led us in tackles and he only went on to lead the league and his new teams in tackles every year after that. it was because of his pass coverage. now they throw it even more, so being an average guy before is below average now for the position where either of them is involved.

And I think Dick LeBeau knows this. He's not going to ask Foote to cover Gronkowski or Vernon Davis, he has Timmons for that. Foote is a roll player no doubt about that, and they can afford to have him on the field without being a liability BECAUSE he has so much talent around him. For what we ask him to do, he's doing ok. He's not the superstar everyone wants him to be. The sentiment around here is we KNOW what he can do, now lets see if one of the younger guys can do more. It's like the Price is Right, you know what is behind curtain number one and it's "meh" so instead you want to see what's behind curtains number 2 and 3. They could be better or worse, who knows.

if it wasen't for the green dot, i don't think he would start. his knowledge of the defense has made that his strong suite for us. timmons can cover one guy and teams know that. i fully expect us to play alot less base this year, maybe not early in the season but less as the season progresses if this becomes a problem.

Foote is a role player but also a smart veteran that the young guys can learn from, especially with Farrior gone.

Yeah that's all wrong. Anthony Madison isn't even on the team anymore. This probably wasn't updated

Foote knows the system and what the coach wants out of the system,
Barring injury he will see less and less playing time as the year rolls on.
He is not afraid to put his nose into the pile, the problem is we need that nose
at the line of scrimmage, not 5 yds from it. Coverage skills are questionable to say the least.
