how do we play it? peyton hasen't played in over a year. he's coming off several neck surgeries. he is with new coaches and a new organization. his go to guys are gone. he's still a good qb.

we have a young d-line. we have a step back at ilb in foote. we have a new young bunch of corners. we are without our starting FS.

do we go after him like rabid dogs with the rush?

do we sit back and try and help our young secondary?

do we play it like the NE game?

do we throw new wrinkles at him with the likes of spence now and again dropping lb'ers to help cover?

    do we use extra corners?

how do you think DLB should approach this big game week 1?

Despite the injuries and the time off Manning is still Manning. GIve him a clean pocket and time he will pick any good team apart. Now the Broncos have a alright OLine but not elite and they did do a lot of running the football last year so they have that to fall back on. I am still of the opinion that the best way to beat Manning is to limit his opportunities by keeping him on the sideline. So we need long time consuming drives that wear down the Broncos' defense. When Manning is on the field I think you have to blitz more than 5 and pressure him. Make him uncomfortable in the pocket. If they get them into third and long situations i would still bring five+ and play tight zone behind it that keeps everyone in front of the secondary and force the quick throw and completion that doesn't get a 1st down. No way would I rely on a four man rush to create pressure unless they have some new schemes to create mismatches.

Just like with Brady you get to him...rattle him...sack him...etc...and you can easily beat them. End of story!

Put Ryan Mundy on our goal line and tell him not to move unless someone tries to get past.

i tend to agree with most that we will need pressure on him from every angle. i would feel much better with clark over the top though to help these young cb's. i have never been overly confident of ryan mundys game. i hope the young guys take well to the thin air. pressure on the qb, in the face of the receivers right off the line, keep their O on the sideline. sounds like a good formula.

We will be healthy, fresh, and excited to start the season. We will do fine. With our offense putting up 30pts, I believe the defense will be able to hold them off.

You have to bring heat, but it needs to be confused heat.....The best Heat is right up the middle ,but we better stunt and blitz,if Manning starts reading the stuff to early then he will get into a safe Quick throw....The objective is to keep him guessing as long as possible and keep him and his WR'S from getting on the same page pre snap....

I also think long drives from our O is a huge help in slowing any Team esp. a great QB....We also need to score the ball force his hand.....I disagree with the Post about pass, pass, pass that's why we lost to Denver in the post season.....Redman needed 8 or 10 more totes and we would have won that game.....I expect we will run the ball 40 times if the game goes right....We have the OL and we have the RB'S to pound out and close a game.....IMO anytime we get a 2 score lead we should go to the ground and pound and keep our D fresh and punish the other D.....

With Haley as the OC ,I expect us to score the ball ,our D usually comes out very strong and we failed to build leads with our O ,we should now build those leads and shorten the game a lot more....As stated I can't understand why people want us to be a quick strike O or to pass the ball so much,we have no need because our D is so good......We can dominate the NFL if we run the ball, call high percentage passes, use the PA,convert in the Redzone.....Ben will have his best year ever, the yards will be down ,but sacks will be way down his TD passes will go up because of PA....His completions will go up because of a better scheme and route Tree as a result he will throw less picks as well....This is whats best for our Team pundits who say we must continue to throw the ball a lot are just dumb,,,it makes no sense if you have a great D......

i don't nescessarily disagree with what you are saying pwp, but the fact this defense is in sort of a rebuilding mode right now, could play into how the offense runs. we are going to be losing alot of players the next couple of years that made this defense so good. it may not be that dominating down the road. farrior, smith, hoke, gay, mcfadden all gone. soon, clark, troy, foote, casey, ike, harrison, keisel will be gone. age happens. i'm not opposed to a quick strike offense to bang out a lead, but i don't want the 10-9 games that we got used to when cowher was here either. i don't think the new defense is as good as in past years. at least not yet. we have to be up at least 2 TD's or more before we go into run only mode. making the other teams offense become one demensional could help this defense. they will know whats coming. the days of us holding onto a 3 or 7 point lead and running the clock out are running out. the defense until it reloads will have to be carried by our high powered offense.

Do you remember the season opener last year? More of the same,it will be
a hornets nest out in the Mile High city, I don't like it, but it is what it is.
Unless we get pressure on the QB it maybe a long night for the black and gold.

Let me count the ways, Peyton Mannings return to football, They will want to showcase him
against one of the most respected football teams in the league (Steelers) A football mad
town that is crazy about their team (sort of like the Steelers but not as big)
A defense that can get after the QB.All in all you have a setting just like you had in Baltimore
last year, only thing missing is a heated rivalry. We better be able to get after Manning and
hurry him, because you know that he is going to be prepared for most things thrown at him.

DL needs to dust off the game plan he used against Indy / Manning in that playoff game a few years ago. If I recall Manning spent a lot of time in the 1st half of that game on his back and confused over where the pressure was coming from. As for the poster who commented how Manning will shred the D because Tebow was able to do it I don't think using Tebow's performance last year is a good comparison at all. Unlike with Tebow the Steelers know what Manning can do in the passing game and they'll plan accordingly. When they faced Tebow in that game last year the reality is they had no respect at all for Tebow's passing game and the only thing they worried about was stopping the run. Tebow's performance in that game surprised everybody and the Steelers got burned for it. It happens

Uh uh. On the last touchdown, that was Mundy's fault not Ike. Mundy bit on the run and left the middle and end of the field way open. He did this multiple times during that game. Ike just took all of the blame.

Another thing is haley has a lot of knowledge of what the broncos are doing on both sides of the bal. I would imagine we see a version of the denver offense that started the year before tebow took over

We have done well in the past with Palamalu moving around and confusing Manning. The problem with Clark out and Mundy in is we can't take that chance. The good news, with a new QB, the Denver offense will not be able to react well yet when he calls an audible which is Mannings strength.

I know you didn't just say it wasn't Ike's fault.

Mundy looked to blame, but he actually ran up to the LOS before the ball was even snapped. He absolutely didn't bite on a play action, since he "bit" pre-snap. You could say maybe it was a terrible hunch, but he doesn't have that kind of freedom. I'm positive it was a defensive call (a bad one) and Ike did the rest.

I don't remember him making any other botched coverages in that game, so I'd like to hear more about those other occasions. I will say that I can't imagine Clark making that same run up to the LOS. It was just so stupid. I feel like if he'd been told to do so, he would have said no. Or maybe they never would have made that call. That's all just speculation. But all 11 guys within 5 yards of the line on 1st and 10 in overtime, in a game where our corners have been burned all day? Terrible call.

Ohh yeah, I forgot about Peyton Manning. I also hadn't considered that "they will want" him to play well. And since Denver is a town that is crazy about their team like you said, I guess that means that they are always hard to beat, even when they're busy picking 2nd in the draft like last year. Good stuff there. Thanks for the expertise.

i think it will be early in the season and both teams will be better on defense then on offense, so it could be a close game where points are at a premium. i like our chances better though. ben knows the personnel around him moreso then peyton does. peyton is with a completely new team, facility, teamates, and crowd from top to bottom. ben just has a new O-co. i hope suisham is up for the task. it just may come down to him making kicks. i like our defense better but they are an unknown in several area's. i'm not sure about any changes to denver's D. i'd like nothing more then to see our new line manhandle them right off the bat. ( i can't get this grin off my face about our line possibilities) :-D
