I think the only reason Haley is gone is because Ben didn't like him. I was actually surprised because they put up points, but our Defense! Ben doesn't have any issues with the DC so he's safe for one r two more year.

You could be on to something here, I've been in the Marines for 27 years and we have officers that do the same. I've seen it for years. Gotta keep them "FALL GUY's" close!

Yeah well,it should be SB or bust next year. They don't at least get there....blow it up.
If Tomlin can't get his mouthy players under control as well next year....he gotta go.

Still flabbergasted Lake is being retained. Not one prospect developed after the 3rd round and his 4 recent selections in the top rounds are Golson, Burns, Sutton and Davis. Throw Golson out for obvious reasons and the jury is still out on the other two. Sutton looks like a keeper. Communication problems all the time it seems. I'm getting frustrated just thinking about it, lol

Charles Clark, DB coach for Oregon, would have been a candidate to bring in imo. Coached db's at CU when they were pumping out some good NFL prospects these last few years. Then the CU def coord goes to Oregon and takes him with. That tells you something there. Pass defense dropped 30 yards per game from 2016.

Haley has been run out of his last two jobs because of his personality. IMO he sounds like he's not playing with a full deck. Maybe he's an evil genius ? I dont know. But there's two problems with Haley and he clearly needed to go.... #1 his personality. #2 His mental gaffes are too frequent. I think he out thinks him self when the obvious choice should have been the choice. QB sneak for example.

Agreed. I hope this news is a serious joke. If not, we will need to put up 50+ points a game next year to win.

I think the real problem is our scouting of DB's, and Colbert's ability to identify good CB's.

Sutton has pretty good college pedigree and experience, I think he will be a keeper.

I would bet $50 bucks that in the last 5 years that the Steelers are one of the top 5 WORST teams in giving up 3rd and 6 or more. All the time (until this year) we would stop a 1st and 2nd down run so it would be 3 and 6/7 or more and some rookie or inferior qb would drop back to pass and he would see a receiver 12 yards down the field sitting in our soft zone. Easy pass and 1st down.

How many times did our D see a 3rd and 10 or more and give up the 1st down? WAY to many. Also keeps our O off the field and kills field pos.

If they are going to keep Butler around they need to get rid of Lake and Porter, they aren't getting these draft picks to develop properly.

This is absolutely unacceptable! Do you think Belichick would tolerate the kind of ineptitude we've witnessed out of our secondary and the lack of development out of our first round OLBs, Jarvis and Bud? Un-freaking-believable!!!!!!! Somebody needs to be held accountable!

    Screw it!

Seattle cleaned house , so it does happen. They don't wait for things to completely fail like the Steelers do.

    The standard is the standard.

Nobody got fired after that complete disaster?

30 points a game was the goal for Haley?

It's gonna have to be 50 a game for Fitchner.

Well I have said this D was young and talented, the lose of Shazier hurt bad. I am hoping that since they won't get rid of the coaches that maybe they will get rid of the players. I really think if we get rid of Mitchell, send Spence back to the couch and get a real ILB we are not that far off. Watt, Dupree and Chick are all young guys. Tuitt, Heyward and Hargrave are young and locked up. Sutton, Burns, and Davis are young and Haden is the Vet we need to teach. We are 2 players away from fixing this, we need a safety without cinder block feet and a ILB to go along with VW. jmo

You do know the Seahawks missed the playoffs this season while the Steelers went 13-3, right?

I agree that it is a mistake to keep the defensive coaching staff intact, but your comparison with the Seahawks doesn't really hold up.

Remember guys Tomin and Porter are best buds. Lake I have no clue why he wouldn't get fired. I have met him and he is a really nice guy and a good player but haven't seen anything good about his coaching.

If Butler stays then at a minimum Porter and Lake should be fired. BUT to me Butler should go also.

Drain the swamp, the defense can't be any worse.

I would say Lake has a big part in those talent evaluations @Da Stellars@Da Stellars

This is why we constantly go the FA route with our DBs

Smoke and mirrors again. We need to get back to our identity a tough hard hitting fundamentally

    sound unit.

Not only tough hard hitting, but this years team tackling was horrendous. I don’t know if it is a coaching philosophy or technique but it was painful the number of missed tackles we had this year. Watching Fournette carry 10 Steelers for 10 yards...... ugh.

The problem is we don't have more time to give these guys, they already had time. Our franchise QB is at the end. If Ben was 28 then sure, he is not. We have like 2 years to win it all. We need to improve things like yesterday. The secondary sucked for years and we have really not developed anyone at that spot in years, lake needs to go. LBs have been a Pittsburgh specialty for years and now we have them underachieving, and they aren't UDFAs, they are high draft picks. When a LB coach's best job is drawing personal fouls on the bungles instead of making young linebackers defensive commodities, he is not doing his job.

Defense was good enough until Shazier went down. There's a depth issue, not necessarily a coaching/talent issue. The linebacker crew has been good enough to support playoff runs since Joey Porter started assistant coaching under LeBeau in 2014. We haven't missed the playoffs since Butler started as DC.

The secondary is still an issue, but it's arguable there's been an upgrade in both talent and scheme since LeBeau left - see man coverage and blitzes that work.

I see a trend upwards. With more depth on the defensive side of the ball, the Steelers will be able to make deeper runs in the playoffs.

Rome was not built in a day.

    Be patient.

I'll agree to disagree. Cheers! :drinks:

    Go Steelers! :herewego:

    This article nails it!

    http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/...ent-playoff-loss-jaguars/stories/201801180120

In their past two playoff games — both losses — the Steelers have given up 81 points, 809 total yards and 598 passing yards. OK, OK — the defense gave up only 74 points because Jacksonville scored a defensive touchdown Sunday. The point still stands: The defense has stunk in the past two playoff games. It’s one thing to get torched by Tom Brady. It’s another to make Blake Bortles look like a star.

I don't think today's NFL allows a tough, hard-hitting defense. Too hard to do that without a million calls for unnecessary roughness, hit on defenseless player, roughing the passer, ...

I'd definitely take a reputation as sure tacklers.

I appreciate symmetry, we could have it in perfection:

2018: lose in the divisional round to Jax 45-42, fire the OC
2019: lose in the divisional round to NE 3-0, fire the DC.
