Not trying to be contentious, but what do you mean by the "same defense," "schematic change" and "not necessarily an overhaul"? Seems to me changing the defense and a schematic change as well would constitute an overhaul. Just looking for clarification on your terminology.

Making all the other players learn a new scheme would not be possible. The current scheme isn't completely Shazier-dependent anyway.

Seems to me the plan is Spence on 1st and 2nd down and Fort on 3rd. Throw in some other packages at different times. Perhaps figuring this out is part of what Tomlin meant by focusing this week on themselves.

Let's say he heal to 100%. As a LB his job is to hit people. Can his spine endure that kind of contact?? Too risky as a defensive player. I really would not want to see this great man re-injure himself. I would feel better about his comeback if he was an offensive player who could strive to avoid hits. Tommy Maddox had a similar injury but as a QB he could avoid contact. But as a defensive player, Shazier's job is to seek contact...

Heck it’s not just 3rd and long it’s just 3rd down defense period. That’s our weakest down on defense. We can never seem to get off the field on 3rd down.

We don’t have anyone that can replace Ryan but we need to rotate DB’s and mix up our looks. Even if we run the same play. Give whatever QB a different look. We need to double the opponents best receiver/tightend and stop the run. I only fear Brady no other QB in the AFC is that good. Maybe Alex Smith on a good day but it’s the playoffs and he’s known for not being good in the playoffs.
