Next years safety class has about six safetys that will go in the first two rounds. Lester from Alabama, Mcdonald from USC, Jefferson from Oklahoma, Armtrong from Miami, Rambo from Georgia and others. Good move waiting on a safety til next year.
ILB includes Te'o from ND and Wort from Oklahoma.

    Absolutely.

I think we did in this draft what we've historically done - not over-reach for the sake of filling a position. Hence only the one DB taken. But we've done really well to have get players in positions that we need all the same.

Spence is going to interesting. Rainey is going to be interesting (my first thought was - another Stefan Logan? But reading up on him, he could add a serious dimension to the offense). I'm hoping Paulsen isn't used as yet another TE/FB in the absence of any propoer FB. But all in all - bring on training camp!

(And on that note - is Vrabinec about on the board? His training camp reports were amazing).

spence is a LB. and a good one. he gets to the ball quickly. he runs past most blocks before they get to him. he's quick and decisive. he plays smart, and effective football. :good:

He is a quality backup but I don't like the idea of him starting. he was the deep safety who bit on the Tebow pump fake on the last play of last season.

    Yes.

The Spence to safety talk needs to just stop, Keith Butler said Spence will be Timmons' backup minutes after we drafted him.

Ok, so I am someone who likes to take a scientific or statistical approach to many things, and I wanted to see how optimistic I should be about my love of this draft. So, I went back to the 2006 - 2010 drafts (too soon to even begin to grade 2011), and ranked my view of our picks back at those times as Like, Dislike or Neutral. I then compared how I viewed them at the time to how things have panned out:

Of the 16 picks that I liked, I believe that 9 have panned out for us value-wise, or in one case validated his draft position with another team (McBean).
Of the 17 that I didn't like, only 3 have panned out for us so far. For the record, I did not like the Worilds pick at all, but I have not included him in the 17 - I give that pick an "incomplete" for now (so I guess some could say that 4 of my 18 "dislikes" have panned out if they like Worilds).
Of the 8 that I was neutral to, only 3 have panned out.

In this draft, I am neutral on Spence and Paulson (although warming up to both), and like the rest of the picks. When I've liked our picks, or been neutral, it's been hit or miss. However, when I have disliked a pick, I have been correct quite a bit. So, what does it all mean? For anyone but me, probably nothing. However, for me, the fact that I don't dislike any of our picks means that I'm feeling really optimistic that we have "hit" on a bunch of picks this year. Bring on the 2012 season!

In other words, every pick is a gamble period.

    Overall draft/FA signing:
    Offensive Lineman - 5,
    LInebackers - 3, Wide receivers - 3
    Cornerbacks -2, Defensive Linemen - 2, Punter/Kicker - 2
    Safety - 1, Running Back - 1, TE - 1

This is a big class for us in overall literal size and areas addressed.
    4 players 300+ in poundage/Avg height 6.1 + appr.
    Clemons is tall w/ speed
Rainy is explosively quick and a jack of all trades type player. Interesting to see where they use him beyond ST.

De Castro the best p/u that could have fell to us IMO. Following that up w/ Adams and Ta'amu, the potential is there.

Time will tell but I like how it unfolded. Solid A

I don't think that's quite what happened. Mundy flew up to the line of scrimmage pre-snap. You could say he "bit," but since it was before the play I think it was a play call. They had been overcompensating to stop the run all day. He also forced two fumbles that day.

    Steelers given only A+ draft

According to John Czarnecki of Fox Sports

    http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/Czar ... eam-042812

This could truly be a transformational draft by the Steelers. We know the OL has been transformed, but with the selection of Ta'amu, Spence, Rainey and Clemons you have other players that can make a significant impact. The true grade will not be known for 2 to 3 years, but this draft class has the makings of one of the best for the Steelers.

1974 Draft in the making? If it's half as good as that one, I will be pleased.

Re: Steelers given only A+ draft

I've seen several draft grades. Nothing lower than a B+ with the general consensus being an A. This is the first one I've seen that's an A+.

I really think that this draft could be one we're talking about for quite a few years.

While reading up on Clemons I was thinking the same thing. Dave Bryan on Steelers Depot has a blog up stating this guy needs some good consistent coaching, but I don't know how you coach someone to catch the ball. Seems to be one of those things you either can or can't do. Hope I am wrong and one way or another that aspect of his game improves.

Yeah it was the play that was called that's not mundys fualt he has played well everytime he has had the chance. He had a big pick when clark got hurt earlier in the yer as well. The coaches seem to like him as well. He isn't fancy but he does his job. That play the steelers were in zero coverage which puts nobody in deep coverage and everybody is man to man

On a positive note, if he does get his dropsies sorted out he's a WR with good size that isn't afraid to go over the middle and can break the tackles of smaller defenders for extra yards. For where we drafted him at I think he's worth taking a shot at. ;-)

Mongomery seems to really like this kid...IMO the light may have started to come on for this kid....We needed a Big WR who can make plays in traffic and in the Redzone,it kills me to watch us run fade routes to 6-0 WR'S.....Also keep in mind we have a OC who knows how to get the best from WR'S,he will design plays for our Big WR'S, he will practice those plays,he will provide them with a chance to use their natural skills to enhance their confidence....

The reason I keep saying they is because of Lyons ,one of these 2 if not both will make the roster...It would be sweet if both guys can contribute,I would have NP seeing a 5 WR set that had 2 big targets in thge redzone...I am a run 1st. guy ,but if you could spread the height to each side and have double fade options and have the speed guys working the middle it seems that would be very hard to defend IMO...

Shows you how short our WR's are....we get one that hits 6'2" and we call him the BIG TARGET

Thats true ,not as big as I would like ,but at least he is taller than some CB'S,the rest of our group run jump balls against CB'S who are taller and longer than them.....As stated it kills me to watch that...

Uh, 6.2 is still tall, on average, for WRs even in today's league. That's a large target for a wide out w/ typical wr speed. That height but slower, well they have them too, they're called TEs.
