Please don't include me in which I wanted him gone way before his contract ended. Thank goodness they declined the option.

Dupree I feel is still banged up. He is still light years from that bum Jarvis Jones.

Good to also have a solid player in Chickillo.

I think Bud's shoulder must be worse than I originally thought.

So out of curiosity....What does Dupree need to do to not be considered Jarvis?

He has already done it. He's already better than Jarvis ever was and the upside is clear.

I don't think he's quite Jarvis Jones disappointing... but to say his play this year isn't a massive disappointment would be a lie. I was thinking he was going to give us that 10-12 sack monster that he flashed he could be at the end of last season, but has only gotten 4. He'd have to average a sack a game the rest of the way to get to 10.

This is about the time you'd expect a player to figure things out... I hope he finishes the season strong

OK, so because JJ put up "D" #'s compared to BD's "C" we are to excuse BD's "C" production? 12.5 sacks? Where he was drafted, one would expect 12.5 sack seasons, not over 2.5 seasons. Yes, I will admit BD is not AS bad as JJ, but a first round OLB for Pgh should be putting up double digit sacks each season or he is bordering on being a bust. I am watching this guy, and most plays the OT is stoning him at the LOS and Bud just flails without moving the OT an inch. So, OK, not as bad as JJ, but in the JJ neighborhood so far, including on missing time from injuries.

You may have stated this more accurately than I did: not fully JJ bad, but a disappointment regardless. I truly expected a 12 sack type of season, like on a J-Peezy, pre-fat Woodley level. I fully thought that is what we had, especially after he came on towards the later part of last season.

IDK. I get the feeling Harrison teaches the LBs technique more than J-Peezy does.

Hes really not. As you already stated, would have better just to say he hasnt lived up to expectations.

For me, I knew he was raw and would take a little time, time that has been slowed down by injury.

I was just being a smart ass though in my first reply :smiley1:

They are both busts. It's pointless to compare one bust to another bust. Who cares?

I watch him every play he's on the field. He's almost always in camera view, getting steered away from the ball and the action. Rarely does he dictate his direction, he gets put where the Oline wants him. Occasionally he'll drop into coverage and look lost. He has shown glimpses, but the bad outweighs the good so far. I'm hoping the fact that he's barely played 1 season worth of games in 2.5 seasons is what's holding him back, but I don't know.

Pretty much this. He was always a "project", but this is year 3. Idc how much time he's missed. Nobody made excuses for Golson. People were even harder on Shazier for his injuries the first two years in the league. At some point you gotta produce. He has 2 1/2 years to decide if he wants to be a difference maker in this league or not. He still has time, but the clock is certainly ticking. I think he can do it, I just want to see it.

Bud Dupree is a bust? Intriguing.

    Care to elaborate?

As much as I also yearn for the days the linebackers were the sack machines Wack, keep in mind this is a double edged sword; teams now can take away the outside pass rushing threat and have little to worry about along the interior.

That 2008 defense was so good not because of James and Woodley but due to the lineman. Hampton, Kiesel and Smith all could occupy multiple blockers at once without much difficulty. Known as the "Okie" Front in addition to the man who is my personal favorite Steelers player of all time, that 2008 defense was legendary. Due to today's rules however, even stern sticklers like Romeo Crennel/Mike Vrabel are using different systems. Here is the current "Eagle" front we use..

    Notice the strong side now has two gap responsibilities and not the defensive lineman. This does not necessarily mean the linebackers cannot get more sacks. This means that the linebackers are becoming more than just pass rushers. Bud Dupree himself stated this in an interview with the Pittsburgh Post Gazette;

We play more of a real 3-4 defense where our outside linebackers are really linebackers. The more you open up the playbook the more you see that. We’re back off the ball in a stack position or we’re outside dropping. In blitzes, we go in a lot. We’re always inside. It’s hard, but when you’re winning it makes everything a lot better.”

Now, does this excuse Bud's still limited abilities like hand placement and bend? No. It does however, illustrate something that many of the fans have been clamoring for years now; more pressure from the interior.

Guess which Quarterback despises interior pressure more than any other??

I can see how physical he can be and does a decent job against the run. He needs to be more creative in his pass rush, always seems to go outside but without the bend that JH has. He is too straight up and gets pushed to the outside. He has more tools then JJ and may still develop into what we all hope is another dominant OLB.

The only comparison to JJ is that so far when he gets to the QB he is a 1/2 sec too late.

12 sacks based on what? I expected Dupree to be in the 8 sack range, which he still might get to.
