I just don't understand where this idea that Wallace will automatically play half-heartedly is coming from. Surely, by the same logic, he would have done the same last season, as he was holding out for a big deal and wouldn't want to get injured? Wouldn't it be the same just about any game he was in?

As for players moving on to better careers - that's just too huge a claim to back up. You could go back to Johnny Unitas or Len Dawson. Thigpen didn't do too badly (got to another superbowl). Kevin Greene.
Alternatively, you could put the same question to, say, the Raiders, and you'd probably get a similar answer.

And the superbowl argument would work if we won the superbowl on the basis of our receiving corps. But we didn't. We won it through a solid o-line, a blistering Willie Parker, a bruising Bettis, and some good gadget plays (not to mention the defense), as well as those receivers. So while I would agree with you that our current crop is better with or without Wallace, the analogy doesn't really hold up.

First off, how do you know what % the 3rd rd pick would give?? And how do you know Wallace would only give a "half-hearted" effort? He hasn't said this publicly that i'm aware of. And why would he do that? If he truly is playing for the big bucks, showing a half-hearted effort this season after not getting any love from teams during FA certainly wont help him any. In fact, play half-hearted and he'll be lucky to see much interest at all let alone the big payday.

Agree. That statement doesn't make any sense. Does the term "cutting off one's nose to spite one's face" mean anything? If Mike signs the one year tender, it isn't like he will be roughing it and having to eat ramen and beanie weenies all year - it's still dam near 3 MIL! Not too shabby! He'll have everything to play for to prove that he deserves to be paid like a top 5 WR and if/when he does, he'll be able to sign a big, multi-year deal here or somewhere else. If he mails it in and plays "half-hearted" then he can kiss the big payday after this season good bye.

Well he might feel that because Teams had to give up a #1 and a Payday is the reason he got no Love....He might feel that Teams will understand him not playing extra hard for 3 Mil....He may feel he has already earned the big bucks and as soon as Teams see just how good he has been they will pay him....

If he is really arrogant and he might be this very well could be his approach.....The bottom line to me is the Steelers will not budge much on the money they have offered neither will they tag him next season,so if he is going to make a stink the whole time knowing the Steelers don't have the money even if they wanted to make a huge offer, then trade him away......

As stated we have a new OC and our QB has been crying publically about how hard it may be to install and learn,he has also been begging Wallace to stay...Well if Wallace plans on staying and trying to reach a deal he should sign the tender and report to camp there is no money to be gained nor is there any way he can get better by missing any amount of time with the new OC and the new system.......

The Coach should simply state it to him we have this amount of money ...Do you want it?If he says no here is your tender if he doesnt sign it then tell him we are trading you to whoever will take you.....His hold out will put a dark cloud over the entire Team and will slow the process of implementing the new O...

As I understand your counter claim to my arguments, but what I've seen in Wallace through interviews, twitter account, and the latest around the league from reporters, is he is getting a swell head. A little arogant at times. Nothing more evident then the supposely "wanting Fitzgerald(sp) money". Are you kidding me! He is not in the same atmosphere as that guy or any of the top 5 receivers. I admit that our receiving corp would be better with him but If he thinks he deserves more than 2.5 million and knowing that the steelers front office doesn't have the money for anything substanial, i believe he will dissappear next year. He dissappear at the end of last year and his effort for going after the ball was less than stellar.

I don't know how long you been a steelers fan but you know how we do business. Not alot of money goes into the receiving corp.

I really don't know how much effort a 3rd round pick would give but it would assume to believe a rookie coming into the NFL would give bit more effort then a guy who doesn't believe he is being paid what he believes he should be paid.

Ok - but nothing you've said there has really given any evidence that he's going to play half-heartedly. You've just shown what we already know, that he's made some rather douche-ish claims. Likewise, I'm not sure how the fact that we don't traditionally pay our receivers supports the idea that Wallace won't play well next season as a Steeler.

All the effort in the world means little if this 3rd round receiver is another Sweed or Troy Edwards...

This Wallace stuff is getting cult-like.

I have not been around, purposely, but since the draft is near, I thought I'd take a peek in here.

First, Wallace is worth only what someone is willing to pay. Period. Like a used car. The Seller always thinks it is worth way more than the buyer. The buyer here has all the chips.

Now, one has two choices here, take what the buyer offers, or sit on it and hope that in another 10 months someone would be willing to pay your asking price.

Two problems with that. First, if Wallace has a great year and hopes that will get him his guaranteed big time contract, the Steelers lose out since they will not pay him top tier WR money. Hence, Wallace will pack his bags.

Secondly, if Wallace tanks, then the Steelers are sitting better since he will not get the huge offers and is more likely to sign a reduced top tier offer from the Steelers. Now the problem with this is that if Wallace tanks this year, it puts the Steelers in a bind. If he tanks, then the offense might follow.

Now, many in here know how I feel about this guy. I personally don't think he is worth top 3 or even top 5 WR money. He simply cannot catch. To many drops and to many near misses. Bombs are a lot like the lottery. A hope and prayer, but hope is not an offensive gameplan.

The guy can run....big deal. The question is can he be the 80 + reception WR that the top WR's in the league get? My short answer is no.

I wish they would shop him now while he is worth more. We need picks, not a reincarnation of Cliff Branch. Wait, Cliff Branch could catch, sorry.

Yes and in the process make it much easier for defenses to defend us with no deep threat to be worried about. You want to be able to stretch the field. If Haley can't "curtail" Ben then what the heck did we bother bringing him in. Besides, BA loved the deep ball as much as Ben if not more, I'm sure most of that was on him.
