Wife is a DIE HARD Skins fan so I watch them quite often with her. Cousins/AB would be an awesome duo to have going forward. Hes a natural born leader who has heart for the game!

Per Spotrac's info, we save $10.8 against the 2018 cap if he is cut or traded after this season, and before his $5 million roster bonus kicks in in March. His cap number is $23.2 million, and dead money if cut is $12.4 million (thus 23.2 - 12.4 = 10.8).

If he retires, the team may have a claim to some or all of the 12.4 million in signing bonus that was applied against the 2018 and 2019 cap, but I don't know if they would get to take any dollars paid back off of the dead money (don't know that rule).

It definitely doesn't appear to be one of those crippling situations where we would be dumped into cap purgatory if he goes. Worst case seems to be a $10.8 million savings.

So, getting rid of AB will make either Landry or Dobbs a championship QB? You realize the discussion is essentially about life after Ben, right?

No, that's why you trade AB to get a top pick and draft your franchise QB.

How about Bell instead of AB. I think having AB as a target for a QB who is either a rookie or is just new to the team and scheme would benefit greatly. Plus trading bell would give us a lot of cap space and we have what looks to be a respectable replacement already on the roster for numerous years for cheap Conner.

But I do like the idea of getting Aj Mcaaron(sp?) He is a poised smart young mobil qb with a strong arm with a good head on his shoulders. Plus he knows what it takes to play in the AFC North

You obviously have no clue how hard it is to draft a franchise qb.

Oh I do. I don't see the point in trying to keep this going with Landry Jones. We all saw how that went when Vick couldn't hit the broad side of a barn and then Landry Jones comes in and misses AB once and he throws another hissy fit but he'd never do that to Vick. What a coincidence. You need a top pick for a chance at a franchise QB. Steelers will never have one. Just trade Brown and Bell and retool.

Trading your two top offensive weapons for a chance to draft a franchise QB who at best you have a 50% chance of turning out is not a good plan.

You have to question why he wasnt drafted higher in the draft if he is all you say he is, he's an average athlete did well at bama where he had a nfl caliber Oline and top receivers and backs, he has to have a strong supporting cast to succeed:

    Draft Profile:
    WEAKNESSES

Surrounded by an NFL-caliber supporting cast with a very good offensive line that provides a lot of time to dissect the field. Does not have a big-time, vertical arm. Average athlete. Makes occasional bone-headed decisions. Heaves the deep ball and forces receivers to make adjustments. Does not drive the deep out.

There's no way Alex Smith stays in KC even if they win the SB. Mahomes was drafted as their franchise QB. I doubt Smith would even want to stay. And Belichick isn't giving up Jimmy G.

I would love Alex Smith in a Steeler uniform even if only for a short time.

Cousins or McCarron. would be my free agency bets. If Ben does hang it up.

But, cap space may not be there for such a move. So, it might be the draft. From what I'm reading the upcoming 2018 draft is QB heavy. So there should be some good choices.

Hell, we can use Ben and Bell's money on Cousins and a decent RB. Draft DB, TE, depth and go win a title in 18.

Keep in mind stafford just just raised the QB bar for pay again to 135M, and by next season it's expected to be in the 145M range, expect cousins to be in that 140M range, we would have to get some players to renegotiate their contracts to afford cousins and thats if the skins and other teams dont get in a bidding war for him...

I do not agree on Alex Smith leaving KC in 2018. His cap hit for 2018 is $20.6 million, and Mahomes' cap hit is $3.7 million. There are teams who have a higher combined cap hit from their 1st and 2nd QBs than the Chiefs' $24.3 million (including our combined Ben/Jones cap hit of $25.4 million). Matt Stafford's cap hit alone is $26.5 million for 2018. I think that the plan in KC is for Smith to play out his contract in 2018 while Mahomes continues to develop.

If Smith does leave KC in 2018, I think it will be the team's decision, and done via a trade. I don't expect them to cut him and get nothing in return, and I don't see why they would trade him to a top AFC contender. I say 95% likely Smith is a Chief in 2018, and 5% likely he's QB for an NFC contender.

Not saying he's perfect he would need some work. But he did lead the Bengals to the playoffs after Dalton got injured and he did a pretty good job in he's 1 playoff game against us. Remember this was only like he's 3rd start and it was against a quality, experienced team lead by 1 of the best QBs in the league at the time BR. But AJ came out and played in a high stakes pressured filled game not to metioned the horrible weather that night with the pouring rain which actually benefited Big Ben due to exp and hand size. Even all that he was still able to lead his team to what should have been their 1st playoff win in decades but thank heavens we lucked out with the last minute boneheaded descesions by some of the Bengals more colourful players that put us in position to kick the winning fg

But from what I've seen of AJ in the nfl and only the nfl, tbh I really don't know anything of his college career except for what I just read in your draft analysislol. But he looks to me to have the tools and intangibles to be a franchise qb. Plus here in the Burgh he would be surrounded by a good blocking offensive line, quality wide receivers and a good ground attack to lean on. I'm by no means a scout of any caliber just my 2 cents based on what could be avaible to us through trade, free agency and the draft and to me AJ seems like the best bet except for maybe Cousins and even then I'm still leaning towards Mcaaron(sp?) just because Kirk is going to expect a fat fat fat contract especially after Staffords massive deal. Trading for a starting caliber nfl QB would deplete are resources and be tough as hell to find a trade partner/ qb worth going after. Free agency usually doesn't offer up to many good QBs except for Aj here soon lol and Cousins. And then there's the draft which in the Steelers case is going to be even harder then a lot of teams desperate for Thrower since we rarely draft in the top half of the 1st. Yes we could luck into a Aaron Rodgers at the end of the 1st like GB or as much as I hate typing this but, basically striking oil that has chunks of gold and diamonds in it and draft a Brady in the last round. Sorry for such a long post.

I would be totally suprised if the Steelers join in Fa QB derby Gorappolo is enticing.

But my bet is the Steelers (TRY) to draft their next franchise QB.
