I remember Tomlin saying when he was hired that this was a game of attrition and imposing your will against your opponent.....while football was and probably in a lesser fashion now still is just that...things have changed too. I think there is a lot more attention paid to detail and planning for each opponent. It is also much more of a passing league the last 10+ with more intricate passing attacks. The high powered, consistent offenses seem to put together more intricate and focused plans every week to go against the D they are facing that particular week. They don't just say hey we're gonna run it right at them or we're gonna throw it deep....they have a Plan A,B,C where it seems like we have just Plan A.
I don't really know how else you can explain how often we struggle with our consistency. Too many weapons for that to happen. There's no way 1 or 2 mistakes should cost us a game against vastly inferior opponents, our talent and our coaching should be able to make up for that. Against good teams I get it but we lose to teams that have no business....

I know we've all seen the success early on when Haley got here and it's baffling trying to figure out where it has gone. Why did we get away from it and go back to what looks like a sometimes mindless looking attack. I think it stems from the philosophy of our coach and his stubbornness to change with the times.
Look at our philosophy on D ...(which hopefully is looking like we are starting to adapt) keep everything in front, tackle the catch and wait(hopefully) for them to make a mistake TO( which have been few and far between) or penalty to help us get off the field on 3rd down. Well for the past few years teams weren't making those mistakes and were methodically dissecting a D that they knew was coming ...
I'm afraid we are adapting a similar approach on O where we aren't planning for a particular opponent and we are looking for chunk play after chunk play because we fear making the same mistakes we are hoping for when on D. I'm sorry but that is no way to run a offense a lot more work has to go into planning during the week to attack teams weaknesses and stop thinking we're gonna step on a field and impose our will.
To use a boxing analogy....We need to be more Ali and less Foreman.....

I think this story is a nothing-burger. When was the last time the Steelers fired an assistant during the season? My gut tells me the team would rather go 7-9 than risk looking irrationally impulsive by replacing assistants mid-stream.

I think the answer to that question is never.
