Raw is what you say when you don't want to accept the label "bad".

I saw it this preseason. Zero growth, still making bone head reads. When you don't have the IQ for a position, you just don't have it. It's not gonna change.

I cannot help it. I like being optimistic. :lolol:

I just want Sean to succeed. I hope he can. Time will tell.

yes i think so. remember the whole defensive backfield is learning to play more man and with different players. we can't take from last year and just say he's not growing. mitchell being out the whole preseason left golden and dangerfield and hagan and webb as the guys he was playing with. the communication was said to not be there then, so now we bring in new players and have to fast track them into the system and get mitchell up to speed and then try to coach up davis too. just a lot happening back there at this early stage of the season with a lot to teach many guys. is carnell up to this challenge? is butler? have they had the time to work with him much? i'm willing to wait and see. i know you like golden and i have been one of his biggest fans since he made the team but he still has problems after 5 seasons going into his 6th. is it just the players?

by the way have you got power back on? hope you fared well through the storm. we had power back on the next day according to the neighbors, probably because of that big mouse down the street and the movie park next door. we had some limbs down only and the house did fine. we should know more later today.

Yup. Its far too soon to be writing a player off at the beginning of their second season. Little concerned he maybe doesnt have the mental capacity for the game but Im not throwing him in the Shark tank yet (see what I did there).

Cant speak for RPO but have a friend that lives in Tampa and came through fine, didnt even lose power.

I can take from last year, this preseason, and week 1, and see a player who is not fit to play safety in the NFL. He simply does not have the IQ for it. He takes awful angles, he makes terrible reads, he's sloppy in his technique.

On the Njoku pass interference, look at him in his back pedal... hesitant, unsure, sloppy... and it's the most basic Safety slot/seam read. High School level stuff.

i bet you were a guy who kept looking for excuses for Jarvis Jones in year 2 and year 3....

None of his issues that inform on him being a bust have to do with communication. They have to do with his lack of game speed, his lack of play recognition... he's just not good.

I dont "like" Golden. I simply thought some were being incredibly silly placing Hagan on the roster over him. Golden is a backup level NFL safety, and a solid special teamer. That's it.

I don't want Golden on the team to be a starter.
But I don't think Davis is the answer.

I could see Davis being turned in to what they tried to do with Golden. A big Dime back, a guy who can match up on TEs. He's much better when asked to come down and man up. He's terrible when he's asked to play back and read.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Wilcox and Mitchell as the starting tandem later in the year.

We got power back on wednesday. Some minor damage (fence, trees, shingles), but nothing major. Glad to hear your safe too

    No. We aren't there.
Where I am at, is evaluating the football player Sean Davis.
Where it seems others are at is crossing their fingers.

Defend Sean Davis' play... i'll wait.

Of course we're crossing our fingers!

His play hasnt been up to snuff, evaluate him all you want but its ludicrous drawing any final conclusions on weather he will make it or not after 1 season.

It can take a player up to 3 seasons till he gets it, you know this, come on man.

I know in regards to offensive line play, that Munch said it takes 3 to 4 for years for guys to really get it and just be able to play and know what they are doing out there. He said that about Gilbert and was dead on.

If we judged Gilbert as fast as you are judging Davis, hed have been a bust.

Gilbert had the skills for the position to be developed

    Davis does not

The reason I use Jarvis as the comparison is that it was clear from day 1 that he did not have the explosion or athletic bend to be an edge rusher. It was a concern coming out of school, and it was plain as day in the pros.

It's the same with Davis. He doesn't have the athletic ability required of the position in today's game. You could argue he'll get smarter, but that's wishful thinking.

I'm comfortable with my position. In a year or 2, either I'll be saying "told you so", or you can say I was an idiot.

Nonsense. Troy flashed all sorts of talent and playmaking, even as a rookie. it took some time for him to put it all together.

That's not the case with Davis, the only thing he flashes is poor reads and athletic limitations.

Didn't he primarily play cornerback at Maryland?

    Not necessarily.

In his senior year he did but only due to circumstances. The majority of the Terrapins corners were injured. As a last resort, they elected to put Davis into that position.

To add to the post above he seems to be better as a CB on those films to me .I don't think he has NFL instincts to play the Safety spot . I do think he has the skills to play the slot CB he just needs more time and Coaching at the position.

If it was my call I would get him out of the Safety spot as soon as possible .The problem is we are so weak at the position already.

Davis was horrendous in the preseason. To my eyes he was at fault for some deficiencies that were blamed on others. Some folks will see a long completion, and see that one of our corners is nearest the ball and blame the corner. However, you watch the replay a few times and there's Sean Davis failing to diagnose which receiver is headed to his deep coverage zone, just kind of wandering flat footed in no mans land. I'm not ready to put the bust tag on him yet, but I don't want him to be anything more than our 3rd safety while we see whether he can put it together. Right now he doesn't seem to have a clue. He should be more instinctive this year, but he looks less instinctive to me. JJ please be OK soon....

i just think he was overloaded in year 1. slot corner and safety. i'm giving him time. i don't think he was the top choice at safety that year but MT likes the speed guys at safety. he had that and so did shamarko. they both also had some corner work in their portfolio in college. neither played one position the whole time. same as golden. same as hilton. i do think we reached somewhat on a safety because of need. we still have that need years later. we missed on the ones we wanted this year i think.

no i wasn't a fan of jarvis either rpo. i've been preaching about the safety spot for a few years and i think it's very weak here. we keep trying to add corners but what really drives the backend is safety play. if you look at most of my draft wants over the years, safety is usually high and i don't think the front office values it near as much. it's almost like any safety will do as long as they have had a little coverage in their background or can run.

If that is the case, which I agree with, then Sean Davis is Obi Melifonwu's pre draft evaluation in a nutshell.

Some believed him to be a better prospect as a corner than a safety. Granted we will not know that until either the end of this year or possibly 2018 but that was not what Oakland was doing with him; placing him at safety to start out with.

Regarding Davis, I truly hope he can put it together.

As a guy who saw Obi play in person many times, I thought that the folks pegging him as a 1st rounder we're reaching a bit. However, I do think he was a far better prospect than Davis, and will be a better NFL safety (I don't see Obi having cornerback hips). I think he was a great 2nd round prospect all day. I saw him as a guy who would eventually impact like a 1st rounder, but take longer to get there than you'd want from a 1st round pick. Good player who will eventually be a very solid pro.

Honestly, Davis was never on my radar before the late 3rd or 4th round, and I was pretty surprised when we drafted him. I was critical of him in some pre draft threads. He was a missed tackle machine in college, and wasn't nearly as good in coverage as he should have been with his raw measureables. I saw raw talent that may or may not ever blossom. At the moment I am sadly leaning towards the "may not" side of that ledger, though I'm not quite where RPO is - yet.

So in a roundabout way I guess I'm saying that I don't quite agree with the Obi evaluation comparison. Neither looked like day 1 NFL stars, but I think Obi is closer to being ready and has a ton more upside potential. I wanted to move up for him really bad in the 2nd round.

Right now our safeties are our weak link. Our corners are out on an island. Yea some of it is communication but what is worse is very bad ball.hawking and pass awareness be it Mitchell, Davis, and even worse Golden
Yes we are hurting back there, and I'm afraid is not just a matter of playing together but somthing you cant fix or coach up. It's almost like trying to teach Ike or DHB how to catch or Jarvis Jones how to rush. They just don't have the skills.
We are stuck with them for this year and need to make the best of it, but it looks like it won't be fixed without changing some players.
