    Happy Labor Day Steelers fans.

Giants fan here: signed up after hearing the news we traded for Cockrell last night. My general impressions from watching Steelers games is this guy is a scrappy player who did a nice job on Odell last year.

Question: Is this more of a zone CB or a man guy? I noticed you moved from a fire zone scheme to a press man this year - does this explain Cockrell's struggles? The hope here is he will perform well in Spags zone heavy scheme, where we run many of the same fire zone concepts LeBeau did. It's a quarters D with the outside CBs playing off.

Thanks for any help or information you can provide on Cockrell's game. And let me add: would LOVE to see a Giants vs. Steelers Super Bowl to settle the Eli vs. Big Ben debate. Happy holiday from Manhattan.

He can't play man. Which is why we traded him. He's a zone guy.

I would say the fan base was split on his performance. Maybe more negative.

Had some great games. Had a couple of bad ones too. Involved in a few turnovers too. Seems to be around the ball alot.

If the Giants will be zone-heavy, Cockrell will be solid. He understood his responsibilities, and executed. I think a substantial amount of the fan negativity directed towards him was based on 3 things: 1. He was another team's "cast off," thus an example of the front office not focusing high picks or big signings toward the corner position, 2. He was a starting corner for an imperfect pass defense, even though the tape showed that much of what he was blamed for was underperformance by others, and 3) as mentioned, he's not a man cover guy, and a lot of fans want to be a man-heavy defense.

He's not star by any means, but he will do a good job handling his zone responsibilities if the people around him handle theirs.

He will make you guys a solid zone CB he will get turned around a good bit ,he is a bit timid in his zone , but hopefully he can regain some confidence he seemed to loose when we tried to implement more man coverage.

He will be ok in zone but needs help. My main problems with Cockrell had little to do with the 3 things mentioned, it was more ability and his lack of it. He did perform ok in zone but he struggled to tackle, he usually pushed out of bounds if close to the sideline or just held on until help arrived, too many yards given up when he had to tackle one on one. He was/is slow, he couldn't blitz from the outside so there was never the threat of a CB blitz from his side, and this had to do with the fat he was slow, or should I say he wasn't slow but slow to start, not quick. In man coverage it was bad, and I think running an underneath zone with man coverage on the outside sealed his fate, when the Steelers ran that during the preseason he was getting torched by 2nd string wide outs and 3rd string QBs on a regular basis. He played well against back up QBs early but really struggled from mid season on last year and the same struggle followed him to the preseason, I think if he could tackle better or more consistently he would have still been here but the fact he can't cover or tackle sealed his fate.

If you all have a good db coach...then he will be fine in the zone scheme. We evaluate and develop poor db play around here.
