ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson reports that the Denver Broncos are currently hosting quarterback Dennis Dixon for a free-agent visit.

The Broncos added Caleb Hanie as a backup option on Saturday, but Hanie won’t get clipboard-holding rights without competition. Dixon is more athletic than Hanie and was more highly regarded coming out of college.

Dixon, 27, has appeared in four NFL games, making three career starts. He has a 2-1 record with one touchdown and two interceptions. Dixon spent last season as the Steelers’ third-stringer, behind Ben Roethlisberger

This guy had the opportunity of a lifetme to prove his worth at the beginning of 2010 when BB was suspended the first four games of the season and BLEW IT! See ya, Dennis.

We wasted most of the draft picks that year. Mendenhall, Limas Sweed, Bruce Davis,Tony Hills, Dennis Dixon, Mike Humpal, Ryan Mundy.
OK - Mendenhall put in some good games, but injuries means he will miss 2 out of the first 5 seasons and he probably won't be back with us.
Mundy was a good value pick in the 6th. All in all, a terrible draft.

If the 74 draft was the Steelers best draft class, can we say that the 08 draft class was arguably the worst? :frustrated:

Agreed, 08 draft sucked big time. And it's laughable that dixon would sign with the broncos. Only reasoning is he's banking on Peyton not being a full time starter so he's hoping to step into the starting lineup. What a waste of a roster spot for them.

He needs to go and we need to find a solid backup for Ben. A kid that can learn until his time comes.

I think they're working on it and we may just see it early in this draft. We'll see...

I want to hijack this thread, but I might start a new one about what the worst draft class was.

Anyways, I agree with BigSteel. Dixon has had his talent wasted. I'm not sure he was every pure starter material, but I dont' think his athleticism was every exploited enough in the game - he never looked entirely comfortable playing in what is essentially Ben's offense.

I know the pick surprised a few people, and annoyed others, but I think the potential was there when he was drafted.

Okay, defend your point. It may not be even close to the worst as you say, I can't say that I've researched it enough to render an informed opinion, but it certainly isn't panning out at this point. Name a few draft classes that were worse than the pathetic 08 draft class. I'm not saying there aren't any, but don't leave us hanging with an exclamatory statement and not support your thesis.

Waste of Talent? Geez, if he'd have actually displayed some I might agree.

Dixon didn't get alot of chances, but he sure underwhelmed me with the few he had. He'd get hurt and miss time when Ben was suspended. His BIG success almost beating Balt after Ben's concucsion was a Tim Tebow like 46% completion pct with 5.5yd/att. I thought the guy was supposed to be able to run? I don't think I every saw that exhibitied. And last year, in his 4th training camp, the guy looks lost in Preseason.

Well, I suppose it's yet again all BA's fault.

A risky pick, and I got no problem with that, but it didn't work out. Maybe the blown knee in college forever ruined him. I wish him well, and hopes he latches on somewhere. But he's be luck to be a journeyman.

I'm not blaming BA. And it's not helpful when the guy gets hurt right when it's his time to shine. But his playing style was basically going to need offensive adjustments, which weren't going to be made while he was 2nd or 3rd string.

That's in his defence. On the flip side, I agree that he never really showed signs of improvement or stepping up when he had to.

I'd rather have Dixon back than Charlie Batch at least Dixon has some upside with his athleticism. The Steelers should've gave Dixon more playing time maybe some trick plays or when Ben was hurt get him on the field.

We didn't need DD's supposed speed and athleticism then and we don't now. We were never going to build the O around Dixon (thank God). When your only hope to see the field is a trick play or a catastrophic injury, then you don't have much. I agree that he was a waste of a draft pick. I like the notion of finding Ben's heir sooner than later. I think Ben will be lucky to play 4-5 more seasons.

DD can be a good QB IMO....He has a lot of skills ,but you can't force him to be a pocket QB.....Will he ever be a Cam or a Vick type guy I doubt that, however I think he could do well in the right system....Plus it was obvious that our previous OC didn't like him and others on the staff did.

I don't think all the Dixon hate is really justified. The kid never had a chance to prove himself. He played one game in 2009 and two games in 2010 before getting hurt.... totaling a whopping 59 passing attempts. He was a 5th round pick (which rarely pans out anyway). As I recall we won both games Dixon started in 2010, so why the hate? Charlie Batch has done little more than Dixon to gain any respect. I wish Dixon well.

Dixon Hate? I personally don't understand the undying support for the guy.

I don't hate him. But he's not really young anymore, he hasn't shown much, he didn't take advantage of the chances he got, his skill set doesn't fit the team' style, and he isn't what this teams needs as a #2 (an experienced/has been former starter that can win a couple of games/year if Ben goes down). Other than that he's fine. Hey, I wish the guy well too. Maybe he get lucky and get a chance some where and do well. But 27 year old QBs don't 'develop', they are what they are.
