Thought this might warrant a thread after the first two preseason games. It's been a topic for awhile, and I believe the 4-6 receivers (if Pitt should run that deep) is still completely up in the air. I favored Rogers early on, but he really hasn't done much to warrant a spot thus far. Hunter and Hamilton have the two tds this preseason (correct me if I'm wrong) but not much else. Thoughts after two games? Even if they only stick with 5 receivers, who will be the last two?

punt returner not named AB and proven, even if bad, known quantity.

So Ayers Rogers and Coates Hamilton Hunter it's not 5 way it's 2 groups.

    I would go AB/Bryant/Coates/Hunter/DHB/Juju.

I would be working them all through the slot till the season starts

They'll look better when Ben is throwing the ball

True, plus the whole playbook will be open as well. I didn't see anything to TE's in the first half, other than Rogers one catch where he was tripped up from behind again there wasn't any quick slants, had some nice drag routes by Coates in the late stages of the third and fourth but we didn't see many screens or attempts to run draws and delays either. This is why I hate preseason games at times

As a receiver it's hard to shine if your QB is garbage or not performing well...

yes but lets not sugar coat some of the marginal play they had as well. 3rd down and three Rogers needs to get beyond the sticks on his route.

Outside of the three guarantee( AB Bryant JuJu) you think all X and Z?

Not saying they can't run Y it's just they are outside guys. Who plays the slot if Juju goes down? Bump AB inside?

I don't think any of those three in the slot make sense.

Eli probably does make the roster...but I think DHB, Coates and Hunter all offer more talent.

Heyward-Bey may have more speed, but he can't catch. As a receiver, I'd much rather have Rogers. Of course, special teams will also figure in.

Probably keep 6 IMO ...DHB is still a threat he may drop half of his balls ,but he still creates space for others and he can draw PI .His speed all .but forces Teams to play zone this should help with play calling and route running as well.

If we catch Teams in man and DHB is on the field that should be a automatic 9 route for DHB if he catches 2 out of 5 for big plays or draws a pi that is worth it IMO .

Thing is, Bryant can do that and more. So can Coates.

Probably makes the roster? He's the incumbent starter as the slot receiver. He played 50% of offensive snaps last year, as opposed to DHB's 20%. Ju Ju is Rogers' competition, not the three you mentioned. After tonight, Brown, Bryant, Rogers, Coates, Ju Ju, and ? They may only keep 5 if a DB is plugged in on special teams in DHB's place.

Yes...Probably...because of what you said...not because he is more talented than the others. I like the kid...but he is not the future IMO...if the Steelers had more faith in him they wouldn't have drafted his replacement in the 2nd round after his one year as a starter. It's not like Eli is the "Old Man" in the slot.

I still don't care for that pick. What they lacked much of last season was the big-play guy opposite Brown. They missed Bryant, especially after Coates stopped catching the ball. That really isn't JuJu's game.

I said something similar in the gameday thread. Yes, Dobbs is not Ben, but I didn't see receivers running free all over the field that he was missing.

EXCEPT ATLANTA's, before anyone else says it.

Has Ayers been playing in the preseason? If so, he is invisible.

Brown/Bryant/Rodgers/Hunter/Cobi/DHB(for special teams as well) Gives us the best chance to win. I'm excited for JuJu's future but it's crime he's just given the #3 spot by most people. He's been injured 3 times this training camp alone. I just don't see him being a factor. If he's on IR can he stay with them team for experience? He needs to spend that time getting bigger.

I've not seen him as far as I can remember. Is he actually listed on the depth chart at the moment?

Steelers.com is fairly rubbish at filling in preseason details mind.

I think those 3 offer more pure speed, but not necessarily more "talent." DHB and Coates have bad hands and they do not appear to be improving and likely won't.

They easily have more speed...not even up for debate. They only thing that I might give to Eli over the others is heart. This kid just is not that talented, but he is a hard worker.
