Hey fellow members! Just wanted to pass along some intriguing draft news.

A series started by SteelersDepot's Alex Koroza about what Pittsburgh looks for in draft prospects was one of my favorite past times. Now it is making a return and I would like to share some of that info. with you guys. Keep in mind, hia stuides are purely from a combine data perspective.

With that out of the way, I will list the positions each day to keep all of us up to date on thia study as it is quite the tool to understand what players fit the "Steeler Way" in the context of Mike Tomlin wants them to.

Without further ado, we start with the Wide Receivers. More coming soon!

Golson missed like 4 of those categories. I think the "player mold" is definitely fluid throughout the years and how the game evolves. What they looked for in 2007-2010 has probably changed now. The trends in the NFL are just changing so quickly. It's a great indicator no doubt, but I think it should be edited to reflect the past 3-4 years imo.

maybe change what they are looking for because a lot of those guys drafted were cut and did nothing in the league.

As to the CB criteria, one guy I like in the later rounds is Nate Hairston out of Temple. Checks 6 out of the 8 boxes, falling short on the broad jump by two inches. The eighth box was shuttle time and I couldn't find a test result for that.

I really like the CBs that Buffalo drafts and they are the only ones to bring him in for a visit so far. Here is an article from one of their sites.

Guy is pretty raw as he was a wide receiver before converting. No games on DBD, so I'm just going off articles, Shrine game, Steelers criteria and the Bills interest. Hopefully there are some games compiled shortly. Very experienced on STs which is a bonus.

we need starters and experience not more projects. to me safety and corner is huge even more so than pass rusher at this point. there are some good pass rushers from the 3rd to the 5th that are pretty good but safety and corner drop off from top players quickly. yes there are some worthy players but they are more project guys not top tier at those spots. with bud and cam back on the field full time we will already be much better in the pass rush area and a good 3rd rounder will mix in very well. corner and safety on the other hand is not a position we have really good starters coming back in the fold like dupree and cam. we need man corners and ranging tackling big safeties to help shazier and the backend in coverage. JMO

I would nab him if he is there in round 2 if BPA is applied. If Josh Jones is there... i would have to skip I am afraid.

Big, strong corner who plays just as fast as his timed speed. Can play either man or zone too. Wish he was more explosive though.

Big issue is age. Going to be 24 during the 2017 NFL Season via 3sigmaathlete.com.

aren't the majority if not all prospects drafted in rounds 5 and on, considered projects? Not sure what/who you are referring to..

i was talking about 1 and 2 and since we have two 3's this year one of them. we need DB's early is what i'm saying and we could wait until round 3 through 5 to get pass rushers. thats why i said we could get pass rushers in rd. 3-5. we have full time stars coming back to help the pass rush (dupree- heyward) and (chickillo) healthy again. we don't have that in the secondary. thats what i was getting at.

OK I understand, but I think OLB is too glaring a need to wait until the 3-5. I'm a big fan of JH92 but I just don't know how long he will defy the age factor. I like Chickillo as a rotational guy but I'd rather see an early round (1-2) talent added to the mix and see if he can eventually start by mid season. Then you can save JH92 for pass rushing and not waste him dropping back in coverages.

i'd rather a corner and safety in the first two picks. with chickillo being a rotational guy that already helps out the JH situation. there will be some good pass rushers still available with our TWO 3rd picks to be had. rivers possibly could drop to the 3rd. biegel for one, whom they have met with. carroll phillips who has visited. possibly ryan anderson. deshon hall. trey hendrickson. even guys after that in ebukam and javancy jones. marquel lee. keion adams. darius english. hunter dimmick. any of these guys as a double dip if they decide to. i think too many are writing off chickillo too soon also as just a rotational only player. don't forget moats is still here too and there are some very good ones in next years draft too. i guess i see more need behind what we have as a pass rush now with heyward and dupree back full time.

Given the heavy number of visits dedicated to the secondary in addition to Golson's recent actions, double dipping is likely at this point.

As much as I would like to nab an edge rusher, I am not certain whomever that guy is will be there by 30 or by our second pick. Why not further boost the secondary to be able to play multiple coverages as opposed to one?

i absolutely would double dip the secondary. two safeties and two corners. obi, king, griffen, kazee would be nice. desmond king that is. nicholson, myrick, kevin king, awuzie, conley, maye, jackson, wilson, wilson, josh jones, any number of scenarios and still get pass rushers.

The safety class is deep enough they can probably find one in the third round, OLB is more of a pressing need they can't afford to wait until the third round to get one.

Indeed it is. Thumpers are now more so for situational roles as opposed to primary ones. Then again, should we see teams like the Titans and Cowboys who have offensive lines that can maul apart opposing front sevens.. look for them to return.

For the present however, hybrid defenders are the new "thumpers"; Obi Melifonwu being the prime example.
