As a Steelers fan seeing all these other teams spending money and we can't even afford to re-sign our own free agents. I know it has never been the Steelers way to spend big money on other free agents, they prefer to re-sign their own. They overpaid for Timmons the guy is not a 50 million player when Harrison and Woodley were injured last season he had his chance to step up and shine. For that kind of money you need to make game changing splash plays. I would be alright if they could get Wallace and Crotchery with long term deals.

the Steelers are never very active in the first couple waves of free agency. they go after the guys that are still around after the first few weeks of free agency.

so far i would say with 6 rings they have done things pretty well.

i will say it is frustrating when they have a real need at oline and there were some pretty good ones out there to be had and they didnt get any.

That's not fair to Timmons. He had a monster year in 2010. in 2011, he had to play out of position for half the year because of Harrison missing so many games. Timmons greatest asset, his speed, is less effective at OLB in our system. I see him in the Pro Bowl again next year unless we are decimated by injuries again.

Right now, Timmons is the 2nd most important player on our D next to Troy

Cotchery is going to visit the Chiefs next week and he has interest from the Jets. Wallace will drag his feet before leaving for another team and we'll lose Cotchery too. I'm just ready the the whole Mike Wallace thing to be over with.

I agree with this fans view of the Steelers and free agency. Steelers never make a big splash and yet are always finishing at or near the top of the division. Oh, and happen to have more SB's then anyone else.

Plus playing alongside a slowing Farrior and/or a Foote-ing Foote.

You can't say we overpaid on Timmons this early on. How he performs over the length of the contract will be far more decisive.

I think Timmons playing out of position, having to drop back in coverage so often hurt his game and it showed. A lot of this problem is the DL, it was only 2 seasons ago that the front 3 could collapse the pocket and create pressure without the blitz but with Ziggy Hood starting and Harrison and Woodley not at 100% health wise it made the situation even worse for Timmons, he would be on the perimeter and teams were gashing us up the middle, this season will be different.

teams dont win overpaying in free agency. I will take the steelers way all day. draft well and keep your players in house. how can you argue with the best franchise in the nfl. fans need to realize that you win championships on draft day not by getting a bunch of free agents. look at the jets and how they feel apart.

While this is a surprise to none of us...I think there have been a number of quality players signed cheap/reasonable deals with teams...it really makes me wonder why they at least havent looked into some of these guys/met with them/etc...but hey...not a huge deal i'm just saying some solid guys coulda been had for cheap.

I still think even if we draft a guard we still need to go out a sign one before the draft. Doesn't have to be a high priced guy.

That's not how it works. I suppose it's the safety's chance to step up and shine when his starting cornerbacks are injured?

Not only did he have less support because of injuries, he actually had to change positions and fill in. Would it be Mendenhall's chance to shine if all the receivers got injured and he had to go play wideout?

Yeah it does suck to be a Steeler's fan in the offseason LOL. Boring Free Agency and Draft for the most part but I will take that any day to have our fun in the post season!

Anyways, I do think we have some issues right now with this cap. We do seem to overpay guys recently. I mean look at way they gave Foote to come back here. And winning 6 Superbowls is amazing and all but nothing is a given that we will win another next year or in the next twenty years. You have to always be looking ahead and never behind whether good or bad. We have glaring holes on our O-line and secondary and positions that need upgrading or replacing aging veterans and it would be nice to have some money to throw around sometimes. And we have been letting "our own" walk and we can't even pay the ones that could have a bright and long future here so I am reluctant to say "We have won 6 superbowls! So lets not worry about anything going on with these team!"

No one is saying not to worry about anything, we are saying f--k FA, let other teams be chumps and fall on their face with FA signings. The Steelers will just keep on doing it the way they have been, through the draft and keeping the players who matter. It's been a proven formula for success. I don't need the flashy FA signing, couldn't care less about that garbage.

Yep - it's hard to argue with 40+ years of league dominance, isn't it?

Well lets not be hasty here guys. While the team has never gone in for the big flashy signings of free agents they have over the years made quality choices in the small amount of free agents they have brought in. SO while I am glad they aren't backing up a truck to dump cash on some one that isn't worth it, I would hope they were looking for that quality guy like a James Farrior or a Jeff Hartings.

Yes, that's part of the Steeler formula, finding the bargain FA that actually fits the teams needs. But every offseason it's the same thing, fans get upset that we aren't making splashy signings. I say good.

@mdbates2, no, can't argue it
