I was wondering when this would happen... probably a "simple restructure" though, meaning no $$$ lost for Casey. Via ESPN Insider...

As we noted Wednesday, it's been awfully quiet on the Mike Wallace front, as we've heard nary a peep regarding any interest in the RFA thus far. The Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers had been cited as teams that could possibly try and lure him away with an offer sheet -- surrendering their first-round pick to Pittsburgh -- but each is in a difficult spot when it comes to the salary cap. Another team that had been speculated as a potential poacher is the Cincinnati Bengals, whose first-round pick is higher (No. 21 overall), but who have a substantial amount of cap space with which to work.

The Steelers re-structured the contracts of several players this offseason (and released several others) in order to give themselves as much cap space as possible -- in order to match another team's offer for Wallace -- and that process is apparently continuing. Brian McIntyre of Mac's Football Blog has revealed, per a league source, that NT Casey Hampton has re-worked his deal with the team, reducing his cap hit by $3.09 million.

That might not seem like too much, but every dollar counts when it comes to retaining Wallace.

Hampton needs a pay cut, not a salary re-work that only reduces his cap number. He's become a part time player (1st and 2nd downs) so he should be paid like one.

i agree, we will still owe him alot of doe. he's still around 5 mil towards the cap with the re-structure instead of 8. that just seems like an aweful lot for an injured old guy.

    Re: NT Hampton restructures contract

I guess this means he'll have to go on a diet, he won't be able to afford his normal intake of food. This news just made the cows out there happy, they'll get to live a little bit longer.

It's about time no way the Steelers could afford to carry him with 8 million cap hit now there will be 3 million less cap hit.

I hope he took a very large pay cut.

If the receiver position becomes an issue; I have no problem with the Steelers cutting his lazy a** to sign Ward. While slow, and depleting at least Ward gives effort and has heart. I doubt Ward would come to camp as overweight and out of shape as Hampton.

Here`s another link from the Post Gazette, with just slightly more detailed info, than the Tribune...
    http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/spo ... ct-326115/
There was also another article about Wallace, that made it sound like we were only approx. 1.9 million under cap, after retaining some of our own players(excluding Wallace), I will go back, and see if I can get that link, now, since I don`t know how to hold multiple links, then post them here.
By the way, I don`t think I like the Gazette`s new format too well... I seem to keep having to wait for "facebook" related things to download to the pages, before they open completely, even tho, I personally have no use for Facebook! It seems to be becoming integrated to every Damn web page I open! :( Grrrr...
O.K. ... After some waiting, I found what I was looking for...
    http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/spo ... ce-318177/
It`s talking about the recently signed recievers, but for some reason, doesn`t even mention Calvin Johnson`s HUGE deal! (?)...
It does say we have roughly 1.5 million remaining, after signing some of our own.
Not sure if that is before, or after the bonus salary cap, all the teams got, because of the penalties to Redskins, and Cowgirls...
Basically, as much as i appreciate what Hampton has done for us in the past, and as worried as I am about who will replace him, I just don`t think he is gnna be worth keeping, after this ACL surgery...
Gotta trust the Rooney`s to do what they do best, I guess...

I thought his salary would be reduced by half, at least. Still, $3 million is nothing to sneeze at. Almost enough for the draft picks right there.

They can cut Hines Ward, but can't cut Casey Hampton? Its time for big snack
to get on with his lifes work as the emperor use to say.

Ward was 5th on the depth chart. Casey was 1st. And the guy who was 2nd just retired. If he's healthy enough to play, we need him. This will be his last year.

Everyone calm down this is to give us some breathing room and still give us the opportunity to get his replacement on the team.

After watching more tape on Hood ,,I think we have Snack's replacement on the Team.....Mac suggested this in another thread so I started looking at more Hood stuff....It seems he is a better fit for the NT position and IMO we need to grow him into that position,he needs about 30 more Lbs. IMO

Well, if he's not capable of rushing the passer, where else can you put him other than NT? Except out on the street.

I agree, that's possible. But 30 pounds is too much to ask. Maybe 10-15.

to be honest it already looked like he put on some weight last year. i said this in another thread, they showed him in his stance from ground level behind. i thought it was casey at first then he stood up. ya can't go from the official site. they still had casey at 325, and we all know he hasen't been that weight since 8th grade. i expect hood is around 315-320 and if he could hit 325 he could be effective. casey was at his best at that weight.

This was a good deal for both. It's his last year and regardless of what is said here he's a beast of a NT in this league.

He took the paycut and we get one more year to fill a giant void in our 34 D.
