For those of you who still dont believe they played any. You can say they didn't try enough, guess thats fair but I say they just would have scored 50 points.

Good news is it seems to be the direction they are headed. Burns will have another year under his belt, Cockrell is getting better and better at it although they will likely try to upgrade in the draft or FA. Likewise Gay will be replaced by Golson or a draft pick/FA.

2011 they had Ike, Keenan and Cortez (good Cortez, the one who earned the contract before vanishing)

Thats better than a rookie, a slow Gay and Ross.

3 plays and that is all your gonna give it? Give me a break............ How did the chiefs look against our man coverage on first drive? They absolutely torched us but then we figured them out and they did nothing until there last drive.

Are you really comparing smith to Brady?

When Ike was playing he would follow a receiver all over the field.

I imagine at some point Burns will do the same.

I'm assuming that is more of a man technique.

Man coverage doesn't work when your secondary sucks, look at what Denver did to NE in 2015 AFCCG. The Steelers will never beat NE unless they upgrade their secondary.

I'm less optimistic I guess, because it's not like they had to cover AB, Julio, Fitzgerald, etc. What Hogan was able to do was inexcusable, whether it's against a rookie CB or an aging one.

Put it this way. You need a pass rush that gets home with 3-4 and corners who can actually cover. We have neither.

    I agree with blast though

    Burns with another year
Mythical creature or FA at slot
Ross is Ross but maybe another cb

    Then hargrave year two
    Tooey and heyward healthy
    Ricardo healthy

Bud with maybe a draft pick and hairyson

Our defense should be top 5 in ppg, sacks and top 10 in yards allowed. You heard it here

I just wish they had taken a look at Gilbert. Pay a draft pick and cut hum. Same as last year with Boykin.
I also hope we are done with LeBeau's sit rookies for three years, play them 1 and give them a big contract so they can fail

you can't MAKE a guy live up to his potential. He needs to want it too. Just because Gilbert was a former #1 and they gave up a #6 for him doesn't mean he automatically ****s a golden egg when coming into Pittsburgh's training facility. They took a chance, it didn't pay off. Just like a million draft picks before that.

I really hope we go after either an elite CB or OLB in free agency. This is a year where we have to make a move(s) if we want to win another ring with Ben. This team is so damn close to being a champion again. They need to find the best CB and OLB possible. And in the draft, if one of their targets at these positions starts to slide, they need to be ready and willing to make a move if they believe in him

Here's an article from a few years ago suggesting why teams are morphing from zone to man, in the way the article is suggesting our personnel might.

    http://mmqb.si.com/2014/01/16/new-england-patriots-denver-broncos-afc-championship-game-man-defense

In terms of where Pittsburgh sits with this, it's worth remembering that there are a lot of transitions going on in the defense. There's a move to a younger secondary backed up by high draft picks, which is starting to come to fruition; the move from Lebeau's 'tackle after the catch' to a more aggressive ballhawking, which is still in progress (Mike Mitchell, for example, seems to still be in the former mode); the move to a defense that can adjust on the fly to a no-huddle offense, which is as much about mental awareness and experience as it is physical skills. And so on.

I don't know if I'd say Mitchell is in "tackle after the catch" mode as much as he's in "hit after the catch mode". The "tackling" part seems to be somewhat optional with him. LOL!

Or "hit regardless of whether the catch has been made, attempted, ball thrown, etc."

It didn't take the falcons very long to shake up their defensive coaching staff, Dan Quinn fired his defensive coordinator and his defensive line coach yesterday, and that defense played very well for 3 quarters, changes have to be made when your defense cant match up for 4 quarters, we on the other hand will stick with what we have and just make excuses if this defense sucks again in 2017....

    .......

Are we really still having this discussion?

Not trying to be rude but the only way to beat any quarterback, Hall of Fame or otherwise, is with consistent pressure. Having the most elite of secondaries with a miniscule pass rush is not going to do anything.

olsavsky, porter, lake. which of these guys has more than zone blitz ability to teach it? we saw this offense improve with seasoned well rounded vet coaches, we need to give the defense the same respect.

What the Falcons did was way too knee-jerk IMO.

The Steelers at times show way too much patience IMO.

There should be a happy medium.

I believe the D is trending in the right direction (despite having real issues with MT), and I believe we will improve the D this off season. I'm not sure why some still consider Golson a thing though.

Yep. I think it was a good move. We took a chance on a guy who has elite physical tools, and it cost us a 2018 6th rounder. How much would that 2018 6th rounder help us during our 2016 and 2017 all-in shots at a title? I think the odds of Gilbert helping us were better than a 2018 6th rounder helpings us. We're in win-now mode. It's easy to kill any personnel move that doesn't work out in hindsight.

If they want a sack machine go after myles garrett, he is the top edge rusher in the draft, we draft late so it would take some inovative trading up to get him but it would be worth it, the falcons traded 5 picks to get julio jones in the draft, could be tough to get garrett but I can dream cant I?????

i dont agree with that at all. it all start up front. if the d line cant get pressure and the qb has all day to throw with no one in his face most qbs are gonna find the open man. its almost impossible for a db to cover a wr for more than a few seconds. its completely unrealistic to think you would ever have 3 completely shutdown corners on your team. you can have 3 really good corners that can stay with there guy for 3 to 4 seconds. after that its advantage wr.

Steelers don't treat position coaches the same as HC's. And in regards to HC's, I think they do it the right way, I think stability is very important. Now Cincy I think goes too far with stability in Marvin Lewis, I dont think they have ever won a playoff game under him.

I dont even have a complaint with the Steelers in regards to position coaches and Im not fan of Haley.

Who do you think they have been too patient with?
