for several years we have talked about getting a cb in the first on these boards. could this be the year the steelers finally do it? they have been known to sit back and suprise us at times. there hasen't been alot of talk about this position this year. with gay and lewis as FA's, could this be the year? who would they go after?

I'm usually fairly surprised later in the draft, but not in the first round (Ziggy surprised me a little bit)...

To answer your question, no I don't think so. I think we'll find someone to be the #2 between Lewis and both rookies from last year (Cortez really impressed me in the NE game shutting down Gronk)... and maybe Gay if he's re-signed.

They typically go BPA so if Jenkins or Kirkpatrick were there I'd think it's possible except that they both have character issues, and I think with the recent Ben and Santonio drama they want no part of those kind of guys... After those two I think a CB would be a reach at our spot (unless we trade down).

I also believe that our FO just doesn't value the CB position all that much. They'd rather put their money in the pass rush so the CB's don't need to be as good.

Tend to agree. We have some 2nd year talent that barely saw the field last year, a third rounder that everyone saw going mid to late 2nd and a 4th rounder that just needed to be coached up. And people seem to forget that with our pass rush seriously diminished through injuries, and one of the worse defenses in terms of take-aways, we still had the number one pass defense in the league. Yes, we gave up some big plays at inopportune times (See Denver, Baltimore), but as a group they were pretty darn good.
If Jenkins or Kirkpatrick fall, you know the Steelers, BPA. Just don't see the need, anymore than I see the need for a first round qb.

we only have ike, brown and allen under contract. ike is showing some signs of age. we might as well throw in the safety position too in this discussion. troy is showing signs of age and injury and clark is only under contract for one more year. he's also getting up there. they have never been a team to have to go after a position and start the guy that same year( usually). wouldn't this be the smart year to do it and give him a year to get his learning year out of the way? we are pretty thin in the secondary actually. i'm just not real comfortable with mundy and clark as the starters if troy goes down or with mundy and troy if clark goes down. or brown or cortez covering ather teams #1 if something happens to ike. we have gotten very used to ike being on the field all the time. brown and allen were both hurt at some point last year. just saying, we don't have lewis and gay for sure, and are we comfortable with either of them covering a teams # 1 wr? food for thought.
