Not a stupid question, I had the same one. Mac said there is a dead money hit but I'm not sure how much and if that's a portion of the full salary or signing bonus.

I thought there was still some kind of hit simply to stop guys retiring then un-retiring?

    This is not true.
There will still be a cap hit.

the only thing I know is that the "retired" player has his rights "owned" by the most recent team he played for. For example Carson Palmer.. not sure if that's what you are thinking of

When a player retires, the signing bonus money that was prorated across the life of the contract accelerates. Green had a $4.75 Mil SB, the remaining portion of that is $3,562,500, which the team will be on the hook for if he's cut or retires during the offseason.

Total Value: $20,000,000 (avg. $5,000,000/year; $4,750,000 fully guaranteed

1,187,500 per year over the 4 years, so if he retires the next 3 year that number would count against our cap which isn't great but really not bad given the situation.

Sorry I made an incorrect statement you do still take a cap hit if a player does retire

Really hope he doesn't retire. Otherwise, each one of his 18 receptions would have cost the Steelers more than 100,000.

If I am not mistaken, Green's dead money cap hit would be a bit over $3 million. Not making light of his health (obviously most important) but his salary this season was $5 million for contributing very little, kind of like Cortez Allen.

If he retires for medical we are on the hook for his bonus prorated over the 3 years remaining in dead money, but on a brighter side he did participate yesterday in limited practice, if he goes full participant by friday he could play sunday?????

he can still practice fully and be in the protocol I believe so it depends on the docs clearing him
