My biggest concern now is the lack of depth and the talent drop off at key positions with all these cuts.

Farrior was scheduled to count $3.825 million against the 2012 cap. His release clears $2.825 million of cap space.

Not surprising. There's been a suspicion that Farrior has lost a step or two (rightly or wrongly) for the last few years. Well, at least we can't be accused of having such an ageing defense anymore - Farrior retiring will lower the mean average considerably.

I like James Farrior and I hope his work ethic rubbed off on the younger guys. It is time for them to step up.

Does this guarantee Hightower in round 1?

i'm not so sure of that. it took timmons until his 3rd year to see significant time at LB. this will be year 3 for sly. year 3 for most players is the big jump year. i think he will get his shot at it.

We need an offensive lineman or two way more than LB. We have some young linebackers ready to step into the void left by potsey but there's not one OL stud currently on our ready to do the same. That said, we have a history of drafting players, not positions, so it wouldn't surprise me if we draft either a LB or defensive lineman in rd 1.

More sad about losing James, than Hines, even though he wasn't an original Steeler. The man was a rock in one of the greatest long running defenses ever.

Does anybody have new cap numbers for everyone since several players have restructured their contracts

At least until they tender RFA's...which could take 7-8 mil maybe? Not sure.

Is there any reason Jonathan Scott is still on our team? Especially at these dollars: Base Salary $2.2 mil Cap Charge $2.7 mil
I thought we, as a message board, collectively decided he wasn't even close to being Steeler-worthy.

another sad day that everyone saw coming. I don't understand the timing of salary cap and stuff, but I'm kind of surprised we released him at this point. To me it almost indicates that we'll be looking hard at ILB positions in the first round, because we surely don't have farrior's replacement on the roster now, imho.

Farrior is from Richmond. VA where I live and I have never heard anyone say one thing bad about hom. A class act that will be missed. Father time can be cruel.
