Ok I know the off season isn't here yet, but I thought with us playing the Clowns this week and resting our starters this would be a good time to discuss this. We are going to get a very good look at him this week( as is everyone else) and maybe Mettenberger as well. Jones is going to be a free agent after the year and will be looking for that 2nd contract which will probably be more then the 4 yr- 2.6 mil contract we signed him for as a rookie.

So now the question is do we try to resign him in the 1.5 mil a year range or let him go? I feel we have ZM sign next year for 690k and that may be the way to go. We aren't going to have cap problems like we have in years past however there are a lot off contacts that need looking at. For example I would rather pay AV who will be a fa after the season then to give Jones more money. Guys like AB and Tuitt are going to need contract adjustments and even though we aren't in cap problems we could be in need of cap space if and when we resign Bell and adjust AB and Tuitt. Not to mention guys like AV and Timmons who are also fa after the season.

Back to my question cause I don't want this to be a salary cap thread, what is to much for Landry? Do we want to bring him back, do we feel good with ZM and then draft a rookie this year or sign a veteran QB cheap? Do we wait and see what these guys do this week vs the Clowns but remember not only will we see so will 31 other teams see, thoughts????

I think we could do better at backup QB. We may have it ZM, would like to see him get some playing time. We know what we have with deer in the headlight LJ.

I expect LJ to get a 5 year 15 million contract, thats not chase daniel money, because he signed a 3 year deal for 21 mill 12 mill guaranteed, he is a 7 mill a year cap hit, pretty high for a backup.....

The average back up QBs are signed for about 3 mill a year some in the 3.6 3.7 range, with the cap going up every year backup QBs salaries have increased along with the market, the cards just resigned their back up QB drew stanton to a 2 year 6.5 million deal, we could sign LJ to a 2 year deal in the 5-6 mill range if that would make us feel better and it probably would for most of you who hate him...

Just for frame of reference, let's look at some signings from last Spring. As a much more proven backup, Matt Moore got a 2 year, $3.55 million deal from Miami this season. Brian Hoyer got 1 year, $2 million. Colt McCoy got 3 years, $9 million. Drew Stanton got 2 years, $6.5 million. Schaub got 1 year, $2.75 million.

All of these guys are more proven than Jones. They've all had stretches as starting QBs, and had some degree of success (and non-success). The Chase Daniel deal was dumb, and will not be the basis for another backup contract. Jones is in line for something in the 2 year, $4 million or 3 year, $6 million range at best. I'd be surprised if he gets more, and would not be surprised if he ends up here at the vet minimum plus maybe a $100-200k signing bonus.

If the other berger on the team doesn't get any playing time then as much as I hate to say this ...Landry Jones will be around next year ....only to lose his spot in training camp to Metty

With a lot of Coaching changes going on there will be lots of changes at the QB spots as well ...I think a real bu QB or 2 will be cut or be on the trading block ...I prefer we look that way instead of throwing money away on Jones ....

I was hoping Mettenberger would start Sunday so the steelers get a good look at him. Mettenberger was decent one season in Tennessee. Bottom line is if Ben goes down steelers are screwed. Anytime you lose a franchise QB there is gonna be a massive drop off whether the backup is serviceable or not. Steelers have too many big players to re-sign to invest in a good backup QB. Jones is average which is all you can hope for in a backup. He can run the offense and has his moments.

We'll see how he performs Sunday. I thought he played pretty well overall against the Pats earlier this season. LJ could be a good backup and a stopgap between Ben and our next franchise quarterback.

Indeed. Landry Jones has a lot more to play on Sunday than just much needed reps. Teams around the league are in dire need of a competent quarterback. Landry has a shot to prove himself he is someone who can be either a quality backup or even a quality starter depending on the team that gives him a shot should Pittsburgh elect to move on from him.

Landry performed Ok against the Pats, it wasn't a good enough outing to win, but he wasn't the reason that we lost.

Hope he has a good game. Somebody might give him a shot to compete for a Starting job some where, he is a FA in the off season.

I really expect a mid-round pick on a QB this coming draft. Maybe we can get lucky and land a Dak Prescott type the Cowboys did.

But, maybe we won't Ben still has a solid 3-4 years left I would think. But, he going to be a lot more injury prone, and if you bring in a journeyman, your season is going to be over anyway.

If we do bring in a Veteran, I'd put money it's Ryan Fitzpatrick. But he's gonna be paid way less money than the Jets paid him this year.

Jones is not NFL starter capable ..I don't think he is bu capable either ...No Team would want him as a starter ,if he is cut by the Steelers he is probably out of the NFL imo...

I did state that depending on what team has as their quarterbacking options. In addition, considering that this upcoming quarterbacking draft class is not that impressive on paper.... who knows what could happen.

I expect we will go up to 2 maybe 2.25 m per year for 3 yrs for him
anything more we let him go see if he can make that elsewhere

    :applaud:

All the more reason I find it humorous the media is hyping Prescott as the "Chosen One" a la Sidney Crosby style (people like Skip Bayless anyway). :lolol: He has been given the keys to quite a formidable war machine. All he has to do is not to mess up and the Cowboys can really go all the way.

We will see if he is cut but the odds he gets a job are about the same as he wont ...He has played a couple of fair games and multiple bad games ...He is a game manager at best, but he is known to throw multiple picks most of the time ....This will keep people from chasing him...If he had a higher upside then maybe, but a game manager prone to giving the ball up ? Not a hot commodity...

I agree for the most part but I'd like to see if Mettenberger can unseat him. If we have to spend a single penny more on Landry and it has any bearing on re signing much more important pieces...good bye Landry ...roll with Mettenberger

THis is true. Jones will be 28 next season. Ben wont play more than 4 more years. Jones will be 32 then so he could still be young enough to play some years especially since hes not beat up. That could buy the steelers a few years to find the next QB. Didnt think about it this way before but that is a great idea.

Which teams could actually be that desperate to start Landy jones? Only teams I can think of are the niners and jets. Jets are probably going to go after Romo.
