I suppose not since all other stats supercede the amount of points a team surrenders.

    Just ask the Seattle Seahawks.

It's meaningless. Now, yards allowed per game? CRITICAL!

13th in points against. 27th in yards allowed. 28th YPP.

Do you think flipping the field is something a defense should do once in a while? Points is the most important category, but if you're giving the O long fields on every possession, it can be a problem.

Find me a defense so horribly bad at sacks and turnovers that won a Super Bowl.

What you're suggesting isn't a quantum leap from what they're doing now. They wouldn't need to construct a new playbook.

They need to choose better guys to rush the passer first and foremost, or send more, like they did last year.

Was a new playbook constructed this year to get away from blitzing, you dumb dick?

It has to be. Who cares about points? Prevent teams from getting those and you will win despite the final box score.

they did it at least 4 times vs the Pats

This defense very likely cannot win a super bowl.

But I do have hope that the defense with Heyward, a healthy Shazier, and a returning Bud Dupree... along with development from Burns/Davis... can do enough to allow our offense to carry us there.

The defensive play improves as the offense improves. The defense have been playing bend but don't break defense since last year. The offense has to do more. The key, to the whole teams performance is Ben! He has to be on his "A" game..every game!

We need 6 cylinders to get this machine moving. Ben brown bell heyward shazier and Timmons. Anything added on that is a plus

I think Mitchell is crucial as well. A lot of folks complain about him, but how often do you see successful deep balls in his area? Ever?

I don't think all the players are being into the scheme or plays called by Butler. Just read this...
"As coaches, we've got to be a little more demanding, and players gotta realize when a defense is called, they have to play the defense as is," he said. "You can't add to it. You can't subtract from it. Eleven guys are responsible for playing the call. We all have to be on the same page. At times during the season, we haven't.

"When you're not on the same page, you're going to have cracks, you're going to have holes and good football teams are going to find them. ... I've been here long enough that when we've been on the same page, we're a pretty darn good football team."

I definitely think your about right on this defense. We need more experienced depth on the DLine. The linebackers are decent... J Jones finally coming around and plenty of depth here. One thing is that Shazier can't stay healthy. He is a elusive and relentless LB but when not on the field what good is he. They should convert him to Safety to take Golden's place. Dupree coming back in a few weeks is a relief. The secondary is alright I will say that they don't give up too many big plays down the field. Cockrell and Gay are holding it down as well as Mitchell. As far as Golden and whoever would be in the slot Davis, Burns, and Gilbert I'm not to sure about them I guess there coming around. They should put Dangerfield or Davis in at safety for Golden. When this all said and done we could be a really tough defense with more experience and staying healthy.

I'd take Bell and Timmons off that list. We've proven time and again as an offense that Bell is not critical.

Timmons is on his last legs.

The other 4 are tier 1, critical to success.

If we had to include a 5th guy, it's probably Mitchell.

Ryan Clark was on First Take and talking about how disappointed he was with the Steelers D against NE. He said they aren't physical enough. In addition to what you wrote, Mitchel is one of the few physical players out there, I'll live with the occasional dumb penalty.

Bell not as critical as Mike Mitchell.

You keep thinking, Butch - it's what you're good at.

Yea, Deangelo Williams has led the league in rushing at times when Bell was out... In 2 different seasons. That's a pretty strong barometer of critical vs not critical.

Unless you watch the All 22 tape, you're simply not equipped to comment on Mike Mitchell or any other DB
