Has Carnell Lake's time come to go? Have his DBs ever been even good let alone great? Great players don't always make great coaches. He is not coaching his DBs up to another level. We can pick on the players all we want but personally I have never seen any improvement in any of the DBs. He had six years to show he can coach, He has not shown he is a good coach. Or does he get too much interference from Tomlin who once was a DB coach? The Steelers need one DB coach, not two! Does Tomlin inadvertently undermine Lake's authority by part time coaching the DBs? Contradicting what Lake is doing? Every other position coach sans QB has turned rags (low round draft picks) into riches. This has not happened with Lake (Tomlin?).

Shhhh. I suggested this once and was banished from this message board for months! ;) (not really, but get ready for 90% pro-Carnell rebuttals)

I'm not sure how it's Carnell Lake's fault, that we have ZERO pass rush. You can't expect these guys to cover for forever.

If you want to get on the secondary, about something tackling or lack there of, would be a good place to start.

I'm not sure it is Carnell Lake or the scouting department or a combination of both. It is remarkable that we haven't had a pro bowl caliber CB since Rod Woodson. The only ones that were "good" were Ike Taylor, William Gay (took a second stint) and Deshea Townsend. Now, someone might say the guy that went to the Saints was pretty okay but not spectacular. But its astonishing we missed so many cornerbacks in the draft over the last 20 years or so.

Let's see what he does with some top picks. Joey Porter, on the other hand, has had nothing but top picks to work with.

Gotta get away from these nepotism hires and bring in serious coaches.

Really good DB defense without strong passrush support does not completely implode like the Steelers. Tackling begins with the coaching. I have never seen anyone go for big yardage with a 180 to 200 lbs, hanging on them. I have seen big yardage when the DB hurls his 180-200 at a running back and bounce off or worse lowers his head (no vision of target) and miss completely. Poor coaching of basics! If your players are so bad at pass coverage then teach them to tackle or at least grab and hang on until help arrives. Carnell has to go! Great player, mediocre coach. Many of his players need some of Dr. Fredrick Hertzberg's KITA! http://www.yourcoach.be/en/employee...erzberg-motivators-hygiene-factors-theory.php

I agree with you! I believe in the past 10 years or so the Steelers have drafted 11 DBs ... none of any note. I really believe the Steelers need a dedicated scout for DBs. This group therapy appraoch to scouting does not work for DBs. I also believe the existing DBs would be much better with much better coaching. Carnell and the scouts are not cutting it relative to the DBs.

I thought Golden and Dangerfield have progressed nicely and stepped up when called upon. I'm not pro Lake or anti Lake, but he should get some credit for those two.

Golson would have been a nice barometer since he was the one drafted higher in recent years (before the '16 draft) and it would have been year two for him, but we know the story there.

How has it worked out? Porter and first round draft picks? Was Jarvis Jones really a first round player? Appears not. Bud Dupre? Give him a break until healthy but he did not set the world on fire last year. How is that 6th round kid doing? How do you see Porter coaching?

I will say this without defending or critiquing Lake, if he is let go it will be as the scapegoat because when your head coach cut his teeth as a DB coach and made his bones as a defensive coordinator you expect certain things from them. So with out specifics I can only say Lake is doing as instructed.

I guess you can give him credit for those two safeties but Golden as been on the team how long? 4 seasons? Mainly playing special teams. And Dangerfield has been tenacious with his dedication and been cut at least 4 times. I would say he should of been on the team two cuts ago and Golden should of started before "Tomlin's Boy ....Will Allen".

I agree it has not been fun to watch the regression. I know that is our DB's continue to play ten yards off the line of scrimmage against the pats we will get picked apart. Teams that have beaten the Pats have played press coverage and gotten pressure with the front four. If you allow Brady to throw the underneath routes, it will be a long day.

I agree. Just because you were a good player doesn't mean you can coach. Joey Porter and Carnell Lake is skating on thin ice.

Gay, Golden, Cockrell, Mitchell, all playing well. Dangerfield making the most of his opportunity, too.

Scheme is the reason for high passing yards and that would fall on Butler, not that I'm blaming him, he doesn't have the horses to play press.

Jarvis Jones was not a first round talent. I seen that sitting on my couch. I looked at his film and he got most of his sacks because he was left unblocked. Rarely did I see him beat a tackle one on one and if he did that person probably did not make it the NFL. Bud Dupree, I'm still waiting and Chick is hanging on the roster until the they find the next "Harrison".

    A. I'm liking the corners, but as of right now I don't like our safeties group. Maybe in time Davis will become great, but not this year.

    B. Our pass rush is terrible, not Lake's fault.

Pro Football focus secondary coaches of the year 2015:

    Secondary Coaches of the Year
Winner: Joe Whitt Jr. (CB) and Darren Perry (S), Green Bay Packers

The fact that the strength of the Packers’ defense contains three rookies and two second-year players says a lot about how well this pair has brought the youngsters along. Good drafting? Sure, but someone needed to put all those new pieces together in a secondary unit that ranked eighth overall in the NFL.

First runner-up: Josh Boyer (CB) and Brian Flores (S), New England Patriots

Second runner-up: Steve Wilks, Carolina Panthers

Pittsburgh does not have the firepower to really give Carnell any chance to do anything.

Right now.. that only thoroughbred is Artie Burns... and he is still developing.

I've been saying this for awhile. This was his last year for me. They have gave him some high round draft picks to work with and nothing so far. Look what Munchak came in and did with our offensive line. You can't tell me coaching isn't a big part of it.

Also, Tomlin was a DB coach for like 7 years and you are telling me both of them can't coach these guys up into playing decent football? Something has to give and Tomlin obviously isn't going anywhere.

Personally I believe it has been the safeties that have been the most consistent performers in a week to week basis.

That long play was not Mike Mitchell's fault. Artie should have trusted Mike defending the middle of the field.

Not sure when Carnell Lake came aboard but hopefully the guy before him is gone and Lake and the whoever scouts CBs should be gone. This is a sad list. I mean some of these guys don't even make it out of training camp before they are cut and definitely don't make it to another team.

    2004: 2(38) Ricardo Colclough
    2005: 2(62) Bryant McFadden
    2006: 3(83) Anthony Smith
    2007: 5(170) William Gay
    2008: 6(194) Ryan Mundy
    2009: 3(96) Keenan Lewis
    2009: 5(168) Joe Burnett
    2010: 5(164) Crezdon Butler
    2011: 3(95) Curtis Brown
    2011: 4(128) Cortez Allen
    2012: 7(246) Terrence Frederick
    2013: 4(111) Shamarko Thomas
    2013: 5(150) Terry Hawthorne
    2014: 5(157) Shaquille Richardson
    2015: 2(56) Senquez Golson
    2015: 4(121) Doran Grant
    2015: 7(239) Gerod Holliman

Hey, this is a pass happy league, you got to get after the QB, and a 3-4 only works if you have exceptional edge rushing LB's.

Until we find the next Lloyd, Porter, Greene, Merriweather edge rusher, we should be using 4 studs up front, and blitz with one LB. We should be using a 4-3 to get pressure, and help the DB's because they can only cover so long.

In fact, I think the Steelers have the perfect personnel to run the Buddy Ryan 46 defense right now.
