One of the biggest deficiencies with BA in my opinion was that he could not see the whole play develop by being on the sidelines. That and he only had 6 different types oof plays. For the past two seasons I was wishing that he would park his brain up in the booth at the 50 yard line and call the plays. I believe it would have helped him considerably with situational playcalling. I have even said to myself that the next OC should be up in the booth where he can see the whole play develop and the entire situation unfold.

With the hiring of Todd Haley. If he is up in the booth then he wouldn't be right there to blow up on the player who ran the wrong route, threw a bad INT or missed a block. Secondly he could concentrate more on the next play and forget about the last mishap. I am not so sure right now that it would be the best way for him to operate though and am leaning a bit more towards him being on the sideline and showing his emotion.

    Thoughts?

Should he be in the booth or on the sidelines?

I think he should be on the sidelines. Our Offense needs that fiery spark that he brings.

I'm kind of thinking the opposite (if it were me). So it's probably more on the preference of the OC...

But with a QB that is so involved like Ben it seems like it'd be better to have Haley down there so the two of them can talk, and work it out together, instead of Haley just talking in his ear. They have the photos for the aerial shots of play breakdowns.

Just saying... If it were me I'd want to be on the sideline.

You would only be getting half a Haley if you put him in the booth.. It's tough to fire guys up when you're a mile away. If he goes off on the phone players will just hang up on him. lol

maybe he gets his own little room painted pink ( it's supposed to be soothing) and has padded walls and a tear apart big ben doll, to beat up on during games. :roflmao:

I think he was on the sidelines in AZ....I'm not sure many OC call plays from the booth anymore, I really can't think of any? Funny because it used to be the opposite where they allmost all called plays from the booth.

I think the best place for Coach Haley to be is on the sidelines so that he can get up close and personal with the players. His intensity is sourly missed on the sidelines since Coach Cowher has been gone. They (the players) need to be tighten up a bit and Haley is the person to get it done. BA never done anything. He never got in a players face, especially Rothlisberger who probably needed it more then anybody else. I liked what the Patriots OC did to Tom Brady this year when he threw a interception in the end zone against the Redskins. He was PO'ed at Brady and let him know about it on the sidelines. The Steelers and Ben need some of that. When Cowher was the coach, he often got in the players face while they were coming off the field. That type of discipline is needed right now.

So, the answer to your question is that Coach Haley should be on the sidelines.

Brady got yelled at once in 10 years, I'm sure Ben would be ok with that.

Also, Brady got yelled at for trying to shift blame onto his receiver, that's why the OC went off on him.

Agree. I think Haley's sideline presence will be important to our O, especially Ben. Intense yes, but none the less important. Plus, aren't there other coaching staff routinely situated up there during games that can report on what the other team's defense may be doing from an aerial view? Seems every time they show booth coaches there are usually at least several up there.

I'd be very surprised if he's not on the sidelines. If you guys recall when Tomlin first came on board taking the coordinators out of the booth and having them on the sidelines was one of the first changes he made so I can't see him going the opposite direction with Haley and I can't see Haley wanting it any other way. As for surveying the field they have staff that can do this from upstairs and communicate what they're seeing via the headsets so this isn't a big deal at all.

I think there are pros and cons to both perspectives.

The advantage from the booth is that you get to see the whole play develop just like you would on tape, but you also are dependent upon a phone for communication between you and your offense.

The advantage from the sideline is you get great communication with you offense, but you miss the whole picture sometimes and you are dependent upon photos and the other assistants in order to get the whole picture.

Most coordinators now call from the sideline. Jason Garrett I think used to call from the booth. I think this comes down to the coaches comfort level. If I am Tomlin, I think it is important that he sets an expectation for behavior on the sideline. I love Haley's fire as I do Ben's, but I don't want Haley to become the fuel to that fire all the time.

Personally, I am excited to see an offense with the same basic terminology, but with a newly defined set up expectations and formations. Arians had become stale. We had the same gameplan no matter who we played.

Thanks for posting this. I've been meaning to start a post about it since Haley was asked about it at the press conference the other day and responded that they had not decided yet. I am one who thinks Haley's talents would be wasted in the booth. His fiery enthusiasm needs to be on the sideline. I think the players will feel more accountable if he is on the sideline as well. Have your assistants in the booth to survey the field, but Haley needs to be on the sideline!
