We need to start cutting......Hampton, farrior, smith....good bye. Stop putting the future at risk by deferring all this money to upcoming years. IMO we are holding on to some vets too long.

if i'm not wrong foote is costing same or more than farrior vs the cap , i would keep farrior another year while growing a new ilb (sylvester is a back up at best) and cut foote

the guys that are restructering are guys that will be around for awhile, they will start cutting guys soon enough.

Smith, Foote, possibly Hampton, Ward and Farrior and a few olineman will all be cut. never easy to cut guys that have been around as long as some of these guys have been with the team.

Exactly...its not like they are restructuring Smith and adding 2 more years to his deal. They are restructuring the guys who are going to be around for a while and its not hurting the future that much by spreading out money as bonuses. Plus they have a couple more weeks to get under the cap....and who knows they may not still do a number of these cuts we all see eventually happening until later on...as long as they get under it then thats fine if they need/want to wait to do any big cuts like that. The Steelers are doing the RIGHT thing here, but apparently some dont know much about the business side of football!

i read somewhere that we are going to restructure kemoeatu too. he now will give us back $ 1,000.00 for every time he lets ben get hit or misses a block, so by the time the season starts we should be well under the cap and have some money to add 2-3 top FA's to the team.

From what I've been reading, there is an expectation that the salary cap is going to increase pretty sharply over the next few years due to TV money. If that's a legit expectation, the restructuring of good, young players' contracts is not as much of a concern as it would be if the cap were to only increase at something akin to the rate of inflation.

I just read something about "dead money". I have no clue about this contract stuff outside of the most basic info. I just don't have the time or interest in it. I listen to you smart people.

But, one thing I do have an opinion about is Max Starcks. I think Starks as good and needed as he was is the most over paid player this team has ever had (and for such a long stretch) that I know of. Because of the debacle during the franchise contract and now this dead money issue, has made more money from this organziation than he deserves. I like/liked him. He just seems to fall into amazing situations with this team and takes up cap money that could secure a young prospect who MIGHT deserve it more.

Supposedly he will have 2 million in dead money against our cap (if I remember correctly and probably not be back and be done for good because of this ACL stuff (6'8" and 350-ish right?).

Interesting that Suisham's cap # this year is $1,687,500.

You make it sound like we have 5 dollars to spend, and we always will have 5 dollars to spend, so we should just pay it now and get it over with, because postponing the inevitable doesn't make any difference. I don't see the problem with what they're doing, in fact I think it's great. We our fixing the problem we have by spreading the problem out over several future years. In those years, we will have more money, as well as many of the guys you want cut (Farrior, Smith, Hampton) off the books. So in this future you are worried about, not only will we have more money to spend (increased cap), but all those cuts/retirements you want to take place will take place, so we won't have to spend that money on them.

We'll get under the cap this year, and we'll get under the cap every future year. So what is the real problem here? That it will be slightly harder for us to sign a big splashy free agent next year or the year after? I got news for ya...

Huge snack..it's called dead money. You're payin for people no longer playin....the more restructuring u do the more dead money u have cause the person usually is long gone by the time there numbers come off the books. Doing it with Woodley and Timmons is one thing, but doing it with Taylor or the older players is not the way to go.

But we haven't done it with any old players. Taylor is the oldest, but he figures to be able to play out that contract. What does he have, 3 more years on it? He can do that. If he starts to stink he starts to stink, but it won't be from age.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me that dead money is nothing more than a cap figure that the Steelers have to account for. It's not like the Steelers are going to be paying money to someone who is no longer on the roster. That is why they only restructure with players who have significant years left on their deals. and lets face it, the Steelers are never big players in free agency so thats not the way the team will go. In addition, for all the compliments he gets now, James Farrior was not really thought of as a top tier free agent acquisition in 2002. Omar Khan and the Steelers know what they're doing.

I heard that too, once the new TV money kicks in the cap will be going back up.

Bottom line is, they need to get rid of some of the older players, Farrior, Hampton, Smith, Foote, players who are injury prone, Willie Colon who has been out the last two seasons with season ending injuries, it makes no sense to pay him 5 yr/$29,000,000 to sit out the entire year, Max Starks who has been injured the last two years with season ending injuries, his is too heavy 350ish to continue to get the money he is payed, Byron Leftwich who is injury prone by sitting out most of the last two years and is 32 years old, they all need to be gone. Other players who should be gone are; Chric Kemoeatu, he is worthless getting 5 yr/$20,000,000 and is in his last year, contract expires in 2013. Cut him now and be done with him.
Melwelde Moore's time is up with Baron Batch being his replacement, he is done. Will Allen is done with his replacement on the roster in Myron Rolle. Rashard Mendenhall should be done, hopefully the Steelers see that Redman can get the job done and draft Terrance Ganaway, RB/FB, Baylor
    Height: 6-0. Weight: 241.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.60.
    Arm: 31 3/4. Hand: 9 1/2.
Projected Round (2011): 3-4.in the draft. He is projected to go in the third or fourth round. He is ranked as the number one FB in the draft and should not be over looked by the Steelers. I think they have a good chance to get him. Also they can look at getting Mike Tolbert RB, 5-9, 243, 26. 4yrs from Coastal Carolina in free agency.

Also, Frank Summers is on the Chargers roster.

Shaun Suisham weak leg they need to do better, Danial Sepulveda injury prone don't waste money on him, David Johnson who should be replace by a good FB ( Ganaway), Trai Essex replace him in the draft or free agency, Jonathan Scott replace him in the draft, and my man Charlie Batch who should become a coach probably assistant to Fichtner and his future replacement!

I am sure the restructuring is about over, Its now time for sad songs
and short good byes. Good bye Hoke, Hampton, Smith, Farrior,
Foote,The purge has already started with Battle and B MACK. It will be sad
to see some of these guys leaving, But not nearly as sad as the DYNASTY STEELERS.
That my friend was down right painful. I trust the Ronney's, their good people.

In all do respect I have no problem with "dead money" at all. The Steelers are very..very profitable and are simply beating the cap system. They have no problem paying bonuses...go to Forbes magazine and see their profit. Dead money...bonus money..extention...whatever it's just business for Colbert and company. Most teams with big cap space in the past buy has beens and overpay...aka (Raiders, Tampa, Minnasota,etc.)..I'll take the steeler way....we will have lots to pay the dead money....because we make it!
