It has everything to do with his release. If you watch the CB he is already opened up to the sideline meaning he all but knows the WR is going outside...The reason he knows is because with the blitz and the fast drop the WR has no slant route or no quick route across the middle of the ball ..Had the WR cut inside then there would have been contact .....It's a way of using the blitz and the zone together to keep a WR from releasing free inside ..Coach Speak we would call that no Free Release ....

not true pwp. that wr has a read off that lb to do a quick slant or a slant inside behind the lb still for a quick slant throw. it doesn't take the slant away just how he runs it. contesting him at the line and a lb cutting the lane off keeps it from becoming a bang bang throw for the qb but it's not a free release then.

difference of terminology then....if I heard someone say "that WR got a free release", I would think the WR was not physically contacted off the LOS for the first 5 yards. If the defender has no contact with the WR within 5 yds, he would have a free release inside or outside. The "free" part of the release signifies "free" of contact and not if the WR goes inside or outside.

If the CB has an inside shade on the WR then he's trying to take away the inside routes and there's going to be contact if the WR goes inside. If the DB is that close there's probably going to be contact if he goes outside too. If the DB is playing off 5yds or more the WR can go either inside or outside or drive right at the CB with no physical contact that's a free release imo.

I understand and technically you are correct,,,,but I bet when they practice that blitz they tell the LB that has that zone do not let anyone cross your face..If a WR tries to run a route inside you make sure you reroute him..Whatever you do don't let him have a free release across the middle ...This is for this specific blitz as the weak spots are from the backside over the middle and from the backside down the sideline ...

Exactly y the LB take that sharp angle and y the CB is opened to the sideline...

yes as we saw just this past week when the WR was running across the middle and caught Timmons flat footed. ILB as opposed to OLB but that's why that contact can be important..plus communication

I don't need to ask anyone. I actually know what I am talking about, and don't require a rhetorical appeal to authority.

Lesson time. A hook zone is generally run by an Inside/Middle Lber, it's a zone in between the hashes, and thus has basically no impact whatsover on a quick throw to an outside WR. The conversation we are having is about curl/flat zones, which are outside zone coverages, and are reflected in the play being discussed.

You can agree to disagree til you are blue in the face.

He free released off the line, it's not debatable

Had he ran slant he had no free release...No free release inside period ...If u run that blitz and allow that the blitz will get beat every single time ....Did he have his first 2 steps free yes , but he could not turn and go inside without contact ..If that is allowed the play is beat...The way every Coach would Coach it ..Is no free release inside...Period...

Had he ran a slant, he still had a free release. You're pretty bad at this.

You would be correct. PWP definition of release is football nonsense.

A "release", is an actual thing. It has a definition. PWP likes to try to redefine things when he uses terminology poorly. And it usually sends him down a rabbit hole of silliness. Everything the OLB does to direct a route.... is called "coverage". It has **** all to do with a WRs release. That's also not to be confused with the terminology for a LB/DB or RB for "release" as those are completely different things

No the LBer would've covered his zone, or taken his man as he entered his zone depending on the coverage call. Neither of which has anything to do with a WRs release.

Likely, you are confusing the terminology of a ILB/DB "releasing" a WR/TE to another coverage (can be exampled on the same play as that is what Cockrell does working 1 to 2, release the 1 to the safety and taking the 2.

A WR release, has only one definition, and that is his ability to get off the line.

Covering a WR is not "preventing a free release"... it's just coverage. Your statement here implies that if the LBer doesn't prevent what you call a free release, then the WR will be wide open... it really highlights your confusion between release and coverage.

If the LB zone was outside and the WR ran inside he would have to hit him to get into his zone or avoid him ...I would hope a Coach wouldn't teach him to avoid him , but hey maybe so...And no that LB doesn't have coverage on the slant WR most of the time that would be the wall 2 guy ....What the LB should do is hit the WR on the slant route inside that 5 yard area, that is not his coverage ,but his rerouting responsibilities.. That keeps the WR from getting a free release inside not cover him if he goes inside..

If a guy chips a TE on his way out is that guy also in coverage of that TE ? No he is not...He is not allowing a free release...

No. The WR already got a free release, when he was allowed to RELEASE off the line with no press/man coverage.

That contact you speak of IS coverage.

At least you are now looking at a picture of the play, trying to figure things out. I'm really glad you brought up the wall. Not because you're wrong again, but because it highlights your confusion. That wall guy (Shazier) clearly has man coverage on the TE. He does not have a zone responsibility, because he has no safety help over the top as Davis acting as the 3rd safety is rotating to the vertical bracket with Golden. His wall assignment is to not allow the free releasing TE to cross the formation, as that would allow the TE into the zone being blitzed from. He "walls off" the route. THIS is what you are incorrectly describing as "preventing a free release". The TE got a free release, that's very clear. Shazier walls the route, and then carries it vertically. None of those coverage actions had anything to do with the TE's release off the line.

Rerouting is a coverage responsibility.... :shakehead:

The thing that's funny about this debate to me is that when we drafted Burns Colbert flat out said that we took him because of his skill in bump and run. To which BFT replied "When do we EVER run bump and run?!" My thinking was that we ALWAYS give a free release. I remember even laughing when Colbert said that around here.

It's a bit of a myth over the years. We run press, man, bump n run, etc.... off man, zone (cushions) are a bigger part of the playbook for sure... but it's not true to say we never run man/press.... hell we even run some cover 1 and cover 0 on occasion (nightmare flashback of tebow to thomas for 80 yards).

Oh I know that we really do a little of everything but I just thought we done bump and run the least. Especially as Ike got older. I think trying to play bump and run is what got Revis lit up by A.J. in week one. Revis is probably coming to terms with the fact that father time has finally caught up with him.

We've seen a lot more the last few years. I don't know why the fan base clamors for it so much. I mean, when Artie is up to speed, and proves himself, yea, I'd like to see more man/press. But, I'm very comfortable with playing multiple coverages that keep a QB on their toes and doesn't expose our corners/safeties to splash plays.

Hell, go look at the Bengals 3rd snap of the game... 3rd and 5, Cockrell lines up in man on Green. Cockrell tries to jam AJ, AJ deftly swats that crap away and is immediately wide open for what should have been a 15-20 yard gain before the safety could reasonably gotten there. Or worse. Luckily, Dalton missed the read.

I do find the fan bases perception of the Steelers coverage schemes very peculiar. There's a belief that we give 12 yard cushions on every play, that we never play man to man, that we are terrible in coverage, etc.

I honestly think a lot of our complaints are because our fanbase just wants to see extreme physicality and the cushion creates the perception that we are making it easier than it should be. Although last year we were ranked almost dead last against the pass and Blake was the most picked on corner. So there is at least some basis for complaint in that regard.

Very true. The fans in Cindy are going crazy. They reason that they actually played better than the Steelers and the NFL conspiracy stole the game from them. Did 34 cheat? Did 81 cheat? That team has good talent but they cannot beat the Steelers in a game that counts. Marvin Lewis is our best player when we beat the BENGALS. They could beat us if Bill Cowher was their coach. Or Belichick.

Agreed. Last year the same people screaming about cushions, were hating on Blake for giving up splash plays in man.

    Make up your minds! Lol
