Eli "illusionist" Rogers

Interesting that they note he has punt returner locked down. I will admit I'd not noticed, but if we can a returner to compliment AB so that we're not always relying on him back there, then all the better.

A shame Ayers hasn't made more of a splash, but maybe a year on the PS will help that.

 

If Rodgers is headed for the slot then let him. Still would have preferred Wheaton there with Sammie Coates on the outside... but beggars cannot be choosers right?

I don't I think you will see Rogers from day 1. It's not like he wasn't in the system last year. I mean Coates has 3 more career catches than he does.

 

I just don't see it. From what I've seen Wheaton needs to stay as far away from the slot As possible lmao.

 

Am I seriously the only person here who thinks Eli will be our primary slot receiver and see the field often? I love the dude and am convinced he'll play a large role in our offense. He's a chain-mover.

I'm only basing this off of three things:

1) He has absolutely shined in the preseason working out of the slot
2) The coaches have absolutely raved about him and made references to him being the ideal slot receiver.
3) He has dominated reps out of the slot in the preseason. Especially in the one preseason game that matters (week three).

Still, Bob Labriola said it best when he alluded to us having no depth chart at the wr position, we merely have five receivers. And they will be interchangeable. You'll even see us with two wr's out there and neither is AB.

 

Eli is not a rookie

 

You don't run Eli for the entire half with the ones, in the 3rd preseason (warmup) game... If you don't intend to do it week 1.

It's a matter of playbook and route versatility at this point. There are things Eli can't do (even though PWP responds to every critique with "he's awesome at that too!").

It's really hard to say you will or won't see Eli more/less in the slot at this point. What we do know is that he is going to play there.

 

So was James Harrison a rookie for 4 years? He had a year to sit back and do nothing but study and watch. That's one of biggest problems for rookies is life in the NFL. If he goes for 1500 yards and 12 TDs he would win rookie of the year. Chances are he wouldn't have seen the field last year anyways. Maybe later in the year when the injuries piled up but that's it.

 

Hopefully Coates can. He has the deep speed required....


Just needs to work on the finer points of emphasis.


On a side note.. for the lot of people stating Rodgers should start over Wheaton... there is offensive scheme called the 11 personnel. See? Problem solved. Pittsburgh will have to use it anyway for two reasons;


1.) No Le'Veon Bell.


2.) Continued ascension of Eli Rodgers.

No your not the only who thinks Eli will be our primary slot reveiver it's just that this debate has gone too long. We shall see in a couple weeks. I think he will be the primary slot guy barring any injuries.

 

I'll go back to my previous statement around situational football and game planning for an opponent. Due to those factors I think it's fruitless to try to predict snap counts and rep splits.
