You forgot to mention among your highlights the tremendous Steelers D against the screen pass.

Sure looked like the Lions wanted to win this game with each string that they put in while the Steelers showed little interest (other than 92) in any part of this game. Sammy Coates did a great impression of Limas Sweed tonight. If pre-season is merely an indicator of depth - this aspect is not very reassuring.

So far I've gotten through 3 quarters, and have not replayed any plays. So, my first impressions are very preliminary. Ricardo Matthews was my #1 pleasant surprise. He looks like legit depth on the D line. I was also impressed with Fort at ILB. I expect him to make the roster, and possibly be our 4th ILB and see snaps. I think he can certainly be better than Garvin. Richardson looked very good running the ball. I didn't really see him in pass protection, but if he's capable blocking he should be on the opening day roster. Like many, I'm disappointed in Coates. It's just one preseason game, so I don't want to overreact, but dayum... I continue to be very concerned about our backup QB situation. I loved what Jones did against Arizona off the bench, but he has otherwise ranged from barely serviceable to awful every other time I've seen him. I never liked Grad. Ben, stay healthy my friend...

Missed tackles stood out to me most. Sean Davis admitted nerves got the better of him when he bounced off Anquan Boldin “Man, I just … the nerves, and then I tried to just make up for it and crush him, but I didn’t know he was that big,” said Davis, who admitted he was jittery early in his first NFL game of any sort. “I kinda bounced off, but like I said, that was my first one. I’ve gotta approach the game like everyone’s not small.” He is going to be really, really good.

I was surprised by how aggressive Keith Butler was, especially with the corner blitz. We certainly got long looks at Cockrell, Davis and Grant. I don't think Grant is moving to safety.

Ricardo Mathews was a pleasant surprise. Since they play so much nickel, could they keep just five d-linemen, with Hargrave and Mathews providing the necessary depth behind Heyward and Tuitt?

The third RB position is probably Richardson's to lose.

If Jordan Berry can keep putting the ball deep and toward the sidelines, the defense will really benefit.

James Harrison still sets the standard, for both performance and work ethic. I hope he stays healthy, but also only plays 20 snaps a game.

Vick is still out there. If he gets another call because of this brittle mofo, I'm going to go puke in his helmet.

Hard to judge certain players as they were playing different roles with a different cast.

No DHB ? JK.. He did have a bad drop early , but he made 2 nice back to back plays as he made a nice block to spring the runner for 8 or so more yards, the very next play Coach rewarded him with a Deep Ball and he made a very nice combative catch and he got his feet down even that catch surprised me a bit...

My list of positives starts with Richardson he showed good vision ,good feet and he finished runs..
Next was Grant he has a nose for the Ball and played with confidence I really liked what I saw from him..
Berry the punter simply put on a display you don't see that type of thing from any punter hardly ever ...
Fort really has a nose for the ball and he brings the wood when he gets there , i liked him a bunch as well..
My 5th. guy is DHB after a rocky start he came back and made plays both as a blocker and as a WR ..
The next honor goes to Rogers he looks like who I thought he was he brings great value to the slot position..
I have to list JH even though I really expected it from him. He is always on point ...Prob should be 1st. on my list ..
I really liked Vaughn as well, he climbed the pocket nice , he kept 2 hands on the ball during those sacks he also never threw it up for grabs when pressured ...His Arm seems strong as well..He will get a better look with a better group of WR'S very soon I bet...

I don't feel like listing the negatives at this point ,just stick to this and see if this list can continue and hopefully add some of the negative guys to the positive list next game..

This is being pretty myopic, but I rewatched a play where #44 Shabazz was trying to make a "tackle" at the goal line. He should be cut just for playing like a sissy, namby-pamby, wimp.

There, now them r fighting words.

Positives: Jordan Berry won the punting job, he had several nice punts. Will Monday looked bad.
Eli Rogers looks like he has the tools, to maybe win the #5 WR job.
Heyward Bey had a nice touchdown but also dropped an easy one.
LJ Fort looks like he has a shot.
No major injuries to a top level player.

Negatives: Sammie Coates, had a game he would like to forget. I'm not worried he was open a bunch, but you can't put the ball on the ground.
Tackling, was horrible for everybody. Sean Davis needs to learn to square up, Boldin, gave him a welcome to the NFL moment, and trucked his butt.
Special teams, out side of the punting was terrible. I'm think Boswell was told to kick the kickoffs short, because he should have had no problem knocking every kick for a touchback.
Gradkowski is hurt again. He's over the hill. I'm not sold on any of our backups, Landry was missing throws. Vaughn didn't look good at all. If anything happens to Ben, were screwed. But take it with a grain of salt, he wasn't throwing to AB, Wheaton, and didn't have Bell in the game either.

LJ dropped the long ball right in his hands for that TD, nice throw and catch, Gradkowski looked rusty and confused and then pulled a hammy on a short 5 yard run, which means he will probably miss the next two games, he's a china doll, they should cut him by the last cut, when Vaughn wasn't getting sacked he was over throwing his targets on every throw pretty much, it looks like LJ doesnt have any competition for the 2 spot. Coates 2 fumbles show he still needs a lot of work before he sees prime time, he might look at carrying the ball tucked away when he's in traffic, Doran Grants stock just rose up a lot, Richardson looked fast and shifty, defense in the second half looked just like a D looks with 2s and 3s playing, cockrell was so so.....Special teams gave up a score and needs work....

i did like our TE's blocking. grimble and james had some pretty good blocks. i was relieved by this. there is hope in our young guys in that aspect of they're game. coates carries that ball like a loaf of bread. that better change quickly.
i didn't mention guys like harrison and dhb because they will be fine. no worries there. i for one like DHB and his all around game since he's been with richard mann. they all drop a ball now and then. he's done much better at this since coming here. his downfield blocking has always been good.

The throw by Jones was late .. I know you really like Jones , but DHB had steps and had to wait and then come back and make a tough catch ..As far as Vaughn goes he had a terrible OL and only 1 WR that will be on the roster and he was havind a horrid game playing with him...I think he looked good with what he had to work with..

yea, vaughn didn't look good to me at all. slow in his reads. as they said, he may look ok in shorts with no pass rush but that won't cut it. i will say grad did take a knee to the hammy on that tackle but he didn't look good. we may just pick up a backup when cuts happen or he needs a lot more work which right now doesn't look like it will happen with the injury. i thought jones did a decent job.

He put the ball where it had to be in the endzone, receivers always have to fight or jump for the ball in the endzone, especially while they are being mugged by a defender...

I'd agree with the Vaughn assesment, he had a rough game because he wasn't ready mentally and because of the talent level around him. THis is why i said it is tough to judge these guys and you have to look at what they did well as well as what they didn't look good on. Coates had ball security issues and I think being thrust into a top role made him try to be better than Bryant and in doing that he failed more than he succeeded. There was a lot of ugly out there though but tough to judge when everyone is held out.
