expected it. thanks matt for your time here,but you have to stay healthy and he couldn't. younger, faster guys are here now. we have some good looking TE's in this camp that should be able to extend the field from that position.

 

Yeah....so this leaves green, James, and a great camp competition for 3rd

 

On my 53 roster prediction I had Spaeth being cut. I just couldn't justify keeping him. Hopefully if the reports are correct and it was due to a failed physical he fully recovers . I stand by the three I've predicted.

Nope this means the Green is 1, James is his back up and 3rd string and Johnson makes the team as backup FB AND 2nd string blocking TE. It also means someone needs to patrol the parking lot at Latrobe because HigeSnack is going to show up looking to rid the team of the scourge that is David Johnson.arrrrrgh

I do't get what people see in Johnson.

He was never the blocker Will J was and he was only marginal as a pass catcher.

The guy doesn't make a decision and do it. Looks like he's always thinking way too much. The reason Mendenhall got clobbered by 2 guys in the packer Superbowl and fumbled.


They keep bringing these retreads that didn't do anything when here and nothing elsewhere. He's not solid in anything. At least Spaeth was solid blocking and you knew what he would give you. Grimble over Johnson if possible. At least he gives you ST snaps.

 

You're right about the staying healthy being important. What's that old saying about the NFL...."sometimes the best ability to have is availability".

 

I'm with you Lizard, I didn't want Johnson back and I thought for sure he would be a camp causality but with Spaeth being released you just know that Tomlin and KC will give him a serious look just because he knows the system and is a veteran. It just pains me to say it.

Well this makes way for Jesse James to be the clear cut #2 guy.

I also see that David Johnson was signed a while back and he played for us before, and he proved serviceable at times. He would be the #3 guy Unless one of the younger guys Grimble, Lang, or the newly signed Dixon out plays Johnson.

 

I really think Jessie James is going to really break out this year. He's still young and this would be a full year with him in the NFL off-season program and he looked like it was coming together. He's got a huge frame and long arms that he uses well to extend for the ball. Ben is going to like throwing to him more than Green.

 

The guy who only caught touchdowns! Best of luck elsewhere

Spaeth wasn't a pass threat, but was the most seasoned vet of any of them

Well, we also lost Heath, so those are two great blocking TE's gone from the roster in one offseason. That's less pass protection for Ben.

The guy from SD is more of a pass catch TE, James in unproven as a blocker, and David Johnson was always just average to me.

 

My concern would probably be more around the running game, particularly on short yardage runs, but we've struggled with that for some time now.

I still think DJ gets cut. A healthy Nix and a good camp competition will see us good.
