Better lesson for kickers in preseason games: kick the ball out of the back of the end zone. If you can't do that, you probably shouldn't be an NFL kicker.

 

Pretty sure at times they're instructed to kick it short to get the practice the rest of the special teams need. I've seen Tomlin quoted as saying this much.

 

Or elimate kickoffs!

And keep me as the commissioner for 20 more years!

 

You're probably right. Not sure if they want the kicker they have slotted as their starting kicker for the regular season to do this though. And, if they do, you know . . . don't be a hero.

 

Yeah I agree that the kicker should be instructed to stay out of the way in meaningless games. Sometimes it's hard for these guys to turn off the competitiveness I'm sure.
I know that Tomlin answered questions about this very thing either last year or the year before. It was a regular season game and he was asked why the kicker (can't remember if it was Boz or Suisham) was kicking so short and he flat out said that he instructed him to do it.

 

I think it was two years ago Glenn because I remember him saying that too. They need to see what they have at special teams.

Why bother - just assume that special teams will disappoint (especially lack of tackling) and potentially cost us a few games per season.

 

I was at the HOF game, and was sitting right where Suish hurt himself. Yeah, he was stupid to try to come up and make that tackle.
