Munch so far has shown that he can work with any ingredient so adding Faneca to the mix just sounds like icing on a cake to me? Not quite in the same mix as the Carnell Lake thing.

Boykin obviously has something that nobody knows about him that makes teams shy from him, but most of us are in agreement that he balled out better than Blake in his limited exposure. So Lake chose bad ingredients. IMO. But I'm sure theres tons of nuance and grey area there.

So, I agree that he had a GREAT career and owed the Steelers nothing. On the issue of his decline - I think we've all seen great players get pro bowl nods when they didn't deserve it simply based on their play in earlier years and star-recognition. We saw it with Troy just a few years ago, and I think Ray Lewis was selected at least twice when it was no longer deserved. If you follow the money, the situation becomes clearer. The Jets ate 7.3 mil in dead money, and saved only 1.3 mil against the cap. He then needed to sign a 1 year, 2.5 mil contract in Arizona. Time catches up to great players, and it caught up to him. The NFL decision makers who pay the $ clearly felt that way about him in 2010.

I think we missed him sorely in 2009, but I think starting in 2010 we were a better team for having NOT matched the Jets' offer. We've been up against the cap pretty much every year, and if we had given him a big payday, we probably wouldn't have been able to retain one or more other key players. I'm on my phone, so I'm not going to start researching who we resigned when, and for how much, but I know there were plenty of big signings that took place during the years where our cap would have been impacted by a big contract for Faneca. I think that on balance it was the right decision. I also think it was the right decision for Faneca to leave and take his big payday. He had 2 rings, several all pro seasons and absolutely nothing left to prove.

How come almost every time Boykin is mentioned he's compared to Blake? Are people calling for Vince Williams to play OLB over Jarvis Jones?

Collecting 27 mil was a good deal for him. Not for the Jets. Definitely not for the Steelers. You also know as well as I do the pro bowl is a popularity contest. Many players make it well past there prime. As for being able to play another year, sure lots of players try to do that, its sad, Hines Ward for example. The Steelers made the right choice.

Tons of reasons really. Because Blake was PFFs 2nd worst rated cb who was a special teams body at best but consistently got the king's share of snaps without Lake even considering another option (the option we gave a draft pick for) until much too late in the season. I could compare him to Cockrell or Gay, but Blake is the easier target for me and everybody because he earned a more soured reputation amongst the fans.

Btw I wasn't calling for Blakes spot to be taken over in the regular season last year. But by game 3 I was at least looking for the snaps to be spread out a bit more than they were.

And I would never call for an ILB to take an OLB starting role.

That's my point. Like it or not, right or wrong the Steelers felt Boykin was only capable of playing the slot (inside) And yes Blake stunk, but he plays the outside position.
I heard a few people say bench Blake, move Gay outside and play Boykin in the slot. ( which the Steelers ended up doing)

Most everyone else just said bench Blake and insert Boykin. Unfortunately this wasn't going to happen because the reasons stated above.

Faneca looks like he does because he runs marathons now...... It's a passion of his and he's in better shape than he ever was...

It seems to me the football bug never really left him and he's considering returning to the game he loves.... This is an internship, a chance for him to see if this is an avenue he wants to go down in the future..... For us it's nice because he has a wealth of knowledge and experience he can impart on our OL guys and help munchak with another set of eyes being we have so many players ( 90 ) right now..

On the flip side, if he doesn't play for the Steelers in an offense that was designed around him with the running game, maybe he doesn't get that nice contract for the Jets and go on to have a Hall of Fame level career.....

Faneca has one thing in common with Munch, they both played left guard at a high level during their careers, and the best set of pulling guards to have played the game, and due to necessity Faneca filled in at left tackle one season and played there at a high level as well, I'm glad he got his big payday, he deserved it....

I agree. Faneca has come home, maybe some inner healing there and getting a football fix and a chance to intern under the Best OL coach in the NFL

Faneca was past his prime when he left, the Steelers made the right move not re-signing him. He didn't last very long with the Jets or Cardinals, he obviously wasn't the same All-Pro player.

In hindsight, the steelers made the right decision to let him go as they usually do with players on the cusp of declining. The only recent exception to that was James Harrison.
