I just read a Sports Illustrated article that had the Steelers taking QB Cardale Jones in the 3rd.

Why would the Steelers spend such a high pick on a complete project at QB who has almost no experience and no accuracy?

    Crazy.

    Other stupid picks you've seen?

I would not want Cardale Jones at all. Give me Dak all day, even with the DUI or whatever he just got.

Dumbest pick I've seen is on NFL.com from Chad Reuter, giving us a punter with one of our 7th's. Riley Dixon, P, Syracuse, #229 overall. Especially with the German still on the board (Moritz Boehringer).

Ray Fittipaldo from the Post Gazette had the Steelers taking him in the 4th in his latest mock oddly enough.

Our current backup is a 4th round project with no accuracy

Here is 1 disappointed Steeler fan if they do, we have way too many needs
to waste a 3rd or 4th on a QB. 7th round Hogan out of Stanford would do just fine.
The Steelers will make their move for a #7 replacement next year after we win the Superbowl this year.

There was one mock early on that had us taking Paxton Lynch in the 1st. Yeah right, a QB...

I think maybe we should take him. If the draft falls the way I think and the top 2 CB'S are gone which I expect they will be take the QB a bunch of other Teams are banking on late in round 1or early round 2 . Draft him and let Teams fight to trade for him .

why not just trade the pick instead of picking him and trying to negotiate over what picks/players you want in return? What if the other teams think the asking price is too high?

I think their will be 3 or 4 Teams really banking on him if we have him it would give us more time and leverage . After him the drop off at QB seems to be steep in most Scouts eyes ...GM'S be like damn I was trying to move up soon I didn't expect the Steelers to take him..This will give us more leverage IMO..

Exactly. We need a good QB if Ben goes down. Somebody needs to get the ball to the Steelers best player... DHB.

    Hehe.

Speaking of QBs, has anyone watched Jacoby Brissett out of NC state? I've only read the CBS evaluation. Total 7th rounder but has good size, escape ability and a strong arm. His biggest knock was too many checkdowns and not trusting his reads down the field. Heard someone yapping on the radio about how he may be underrated. Just seeing if anyone had any opinions...

He is a pretty good qb. I watched him alot. He didn't have alot of time to look down field the games I seen. Seems to have a pretty accurate arm too

What part are you guys disagreeing on ? All of the statement or just parts of it ? Lynch is projected to go in round #1 or early in round #2 . Most draft sites have him at the #3 QB. Most draft sites actually have him in the Top 20 on the big boards . Also most pundits are speculating that Teams will be trying to move back into round #1 to get him.

So I really can't understand what about my statement that is so hard to envision ? To me it's simple supply and demand Teams need QB'S and he is slated to go right near where the Steelers are picking so for Teams looking to make a move and Lynch is there when we pick why not draft him and leverage multiple Teams with late 1st. round picks and early 2nd. round picks..

I think your post says it all. Things like "draft sites", "pundits" and "speculating." It doesn't matter what the pundits speculate. No pundit knows for sure who has Lynch valued where. We have needs, and should draft who we want at 25 or trade the pick to the highest bidder (who may want someone else, and be willing to pay more than the best offer for Lynch) if we want to move back. The draft is already risky enough. Playing games trying to be cute introduces even more risk.

I think it would be foolish to draft him in order to trade him. I have no problem moving down if somebody wants to trade up though.

I think if Goff and Wentz go 1 and 2, I doubt Lynch gets out of the top 10 though. Someone will be desperate enough to come up and get him.

I personally don't like Lynch. He has a slow delivery I just don't like his style at all.

If the Steelers FO thought Lynch was a future franchise QB it makes sense to grab him to be groomed behind Ben but I don't see that happening.

I don't see using Lynch as trade bait in any way practical.

But I do get the importance of a QB and that Lynch was projected as a top 10 pick a few months ago.

Aaron Rodgers being the obvious example of that paying off.

I think you may be right , but if not I think it would be a strong move for the Steelers to draft him if he falls to them . Those desperate Teams that you mentioned took a gamble he would fall closer to them and now we would have him.The way I look at that is those Teams would just become that much more desperate and would make the Steelers position stronger than it would be by simply trading back . Now as I stated if 2 or 3 Teams get to fighting over him then the Steelers draft could become one of the greatest of all times...

Or, we pick him and find out that nobody values him as much as we thought. Now we're in a rush to find a deal as pick after pick is made. Connor Cook goes off the board to one team we thought wanted Lynch, and Day 1 ends and we're sitting there with a QB who probably won't be ready to take an NFL snap for a year or more. But hey, suddenly before the 2nd round, we get a call from someone who will give us less value than our original 25th pick to bail us out. The 4 or 5 guys we did want are gone. Now do we keep him and pretend the intent all along was to draft someone to step into Ben's shoes in 3-4 years - around the time when the rookie's contract is set to expire? Or do we take the crummy deal and settle for someone who was lower on our board plus a 4th or 5th round pick?

If we are on the clock at 25, and someone wants him, then trade the pick. But don't assume that they'd be willing to offer more if we draft him. That's a risky path. If someone wants him, they'll pay the price - especially if he's still there at 25. Pick 25 is a point in the 1st where it's realistic for teams to trade up without giving up a kings ransom. If multiple teams want Lynch, they will be offering to move up to get in ahead of each other.

It is just a what if type of deal. I have no real expectation he will be on the board at pick #25 . I just see to many Teams with QB problems drafting high in round #2 to not take Lynch even if Cook goes off the board, heck that would add to the panic as now the only real good projected QB left would be Lynch. I actually hope we have a good CB available when we pick, I fear that we may not .If that does occur just need to be prepared and have other options and I for 1 would like the risk vs. reward of drafting Lynch at 25 as a draft strategy.

Some Teams might not like dealing with the Steelers and most teams probably don't expect the Steelers to draft a QB at #25, so that could limit the amount of calls that KC will get if Lynch is on the board and then if he calls them they will fill like they have the power. I would rather go the other way and force other Teams boards and shake up the draft...

To me that's like playing the lottery as a retirement plan instead of contributing to a 401k.
