No, his numbers don't speak to him being overrated, in my opinion. I am thrilled that Willie was a Steeler.

I just wish we could have given him some better offensive lines to run behind :(

    OVerrated? Compared to what?
He's not HOFer, and I don't think anyone is arguing that he is.
He was maybe the top RB in the NFL for a little while. And i don't think anyone would argue that he isn't.

So I don't think he's overrated, but I don't think that he's underrated in any sense either.

He was ineffective in short yardage and red zone attempts, he led league in attempts so his YPC was slightly below par (odd for an alleged hr hitter), he went down easily, wasnt much of blocker during passing downs and couldnt catch very well.

He was what he was. A speed back that complimented Bettis. As memory serves, we hadn't invested in that kind of guy for a while, so he was kind of exciting in that respect. When we didn't find a big bruising back after Bettis left, Parker's game deteriorated. The injuries didn't help, either.

When bettis left parker went off in yards. Also below par until he got hurt he was averaging well over four yards a carry he was 4.7 ypc one year which is well above par in the nfl.

I guess to be overrated someone has to think you were great. I never did. I was never a fan of FWP...

He racked up big yards against inferior competition, but wasn't able to grind out tough yards against good defenses.

:hmmm: He had far better lines than any of our current backs have had. Put Mendenhall or Redman behind Smith, Faneca, Hartings, Simmons and Starks and watch the hundred yard games pile up.

Thigpen82 said it right. He was what he was.

An undrafted player that racked 5000+ yds, a 4+ YPC avg, and a 75 yd SB TD on the only team that would take him.

    Define overrated?

Good point. Obviously in 2003 and before, he was very, very underrated. In 2008, he was obviously overrated. I assumed we were judging him based on his legacy, what people currently think of what he was in his best days.

Im talking about his whole career with the steelers. Once he broke his leg and lost a step he was done. That's typical at the rb position. He had three really good years before getting injured.

He was a top back until he broke his leg, no question.

He was a back-up that started after.

Really? We're that hard up for things to talk about? Might as well reach way back then. How about Louie Lipps? Was he really that good or did we make a mistake in drafting him?

i kind of scanned some of the responses so i'm probably just reiterating other things that have been mentioned . . .

for an UDFA, the dude really wasn't 'rated.' in fact, to even make the roster would have meant he 'exceeded expectations.' to have a landmark run in a super bowl win, a franchise record for rushing yards in a game, two 1,000-yard seasons (out of two as a full-time starter), and was leading the league in rushing prior to breaking his foot at the end of his final season in the black and gold . . .

props, FWP!! thanks and thanks again!!

I wouldn't say that he was overrated or underrated. I'm indifferent to Willie Parker. I just think he was ok. He was not a typical Steelers running back and now that we know that Mike Tomlin is not given to running anyway he probably had his best days under Cowher. I honestly like him better than Mendy though. Mendy just rubs me the wrong way. However, other teams have had opportunities go get him and they've passed or cut him so I don't think we are missing anything by not having him.

While Parker was feast or famine at times he at least learned from Bettis to fall forward for and extra yard or two. Mendy doesn't know how to do that.

Its a shame Parker broke his leg that one year, because he was having a really good year and started to become a really complete back.

I don't think people ever overrated him and called him a complete polished back, and you can't overrate the speed he had.

I don't think Parker was overrated. He did what he did but I think of him as a pitcher who only throws 100MPH heat. A few MPH's off (broken leg) and he's done. Willie was fun to watch though when he kicked in the 4.2 speed.

He was an undrafted free agent who was an integral part of two Super Bowl championship teams, and had 2 excellent seasons in 2006-2007 in between. Hard to call that underrrated.

I'm in the minority again but I liked FWP!! I though he was great, he wasn't the Steelers normal smash the line and see how many yards you can grind out, instead he had a grace about him and he was very light on his feet. I agree, you could see the drop off after the leg break but someone here said he racked up yards against inferior competition. What about Adrian Peterson, every NFL pundit washes the guys underwear and you swear he is already a HOFer but racking up yards against inferior competition is exactly what he does. I watched AP gain like 180+ yards against the Browns and then play the Bears and he rushed for loke 49 yards, but FWP would be in that 70 yard bracket most games. In the end it doesn't matter what people think of FWP, he was an UDFA who contributed to the team for a few years and he very valuble in his role, I thank him for his service and glad he was a Steeler.
