Del Rio said on NFL channel yesterday (to paraphrase) that he is lucky to have his starting QB who is leaving a lot of cap space to work with, carr will have a big payday coming he said, but right now his rookie salary cap gives them extra cap room.....

they pick right in front of us in round 1 and three spots ahead of us in round 2, if they lose Nelson it looks like we'll both be looking for a safety early.

Lol. I know it kind of makes sense, but it must grate a little to hear your boss saying how great it is that they're paying you so little compared with what you might be worth.

Your right on, when you consider carrs contract is 5.371 million for 4 years, imagine a franchise QB locked into a deal for that kind of money and still has 2 years left on his deal and his base salary this year is 733K and next year 2017 his base is 977K, I imagine his agent is going to make the raiders pay up during the 2017 off season; Hows the baby doing thig, hows those 2 AM wakeups working for ya LOL......

But smart teams usually will renegotiate a year before your last. You don't wait too late or bad things can happen.

They can negotiate a new deal with carr but under the rookie salary cap rules they cant negotiate with him untill he completes his 3rd year which will be completed at the end of this season, so I expect his big payday will come after this season is complete..

I'm sure the Steelers didn't have any interest in a soon to be 33 yr old safety, let the Raiders overpay him.

The Raiders have tons of cap room so it makes sense that they would pick up Nelson. Reggie McKenzie seems to be turning that mess around.

Factsb are facts, and the Raiders are making a serious playoff push. Might be on paper as of today, but they have upgraded very well to this point. I also agree that a drafted DB this year, especially a 1st rounder will start day one.

Yes. Having a franchise QB playing under a rookie contract is a tremendous advantage when it comes to filling out a roster in free agency and/or keeping your own talent when their contracts are up. There are a number of reason why Seattle has had such a run of success, but I think having Wilson play so well under a rookie contract is reason #1. It allowed them to do so much to build the rest of the roster. It will be interesting to see whether they can sustain that level of success. I think they'll contend, but I doubt they'll be dominant again like the team that pummeled Denver.
