I'll amend my earlier statement. They also may move on right after the draft if they think they've addressed the corner position sufficiently in free agency and the draft such that there is definitely no place for him. I'll be surprised if it happens before then. Now that I've said that, I'll hop over to Steelers Depot and probably see that they've just cut him...

Yeah I gotta ask because you can't take anything for granted in the way that they treat the secondary.

ok, i'm on board with willie. not totally against this signing and especially if the money was right. i just didn't want him at some stupid number. we will see at age 34 though. i have always liked willie even in the early years. he was never signed as a shut down number one. now another good draft pick. we should have enough leadership back there now to bring a few newbies along.

to me we need to sign a veteran cb free agent possibly to start at 1 gay at 2 golson in the slot (or if he shine put him number two and gay in the slot.) we don't need a safety since golden grant mitchell can pair with a draft pick but depends who is available

Per NFL Network, it's 3 years, 7.5 million. If true, that's really nice.

A little less than I thought, but that seems about right. It's a good deal for both sides. Now let's clear some cap space and make a run at a starter in the secondary

I'm not seeing why it wouldn't be. He was the worst CB in the NFL last year. No one will sign him for less than the vet minimum of $760,000. His salary would be $4.4MM. If you don't want him, cut him. If you do want him, cut him. Then sign him for the minimum. Net savings, $3,640,000. Either way, he gets cut first. Post June 1.

Great signing. Will Gay has played good football for the
    Steelers for some time now.

    Here's how it works

    Cut Pre June 1:
    2016 Dead = 4.05
    2016 Savings = 1.7

    Cut Post June 1:
    2016 Dead = 1.35
    2016 Savings = 4.4
    2017 Dead = 2.7

So, if you want him... cutting him Post June 1, and pushing dead cap space in to the future (when you may not need it today), is simply bad cap management.

Allen will either be replaced with a free agent signing and thus cut (to use the cap space created), or he will come to camp to compete for a job under his current contract. He will be cut post June 1 if he can't make the team. He will be cut Pre June 1, if we acquire someone to take his place

I'm twittling my thumbs just waiting to see what they do at the CB and safety spot. We have an elite QB; I want to maximize his last few years.

Love, love that cost. I'd have been good with 3/9.

He signed with the cards in 2012 for two years for a lot less money, 1.5 mill a year, strangely now he is 4 years older his value went up instead of down, he has to be laughing all the way to the bank, it's doubtful he would have got a 7.5 million deal in FA.....

2.5 per? You think it's doubtful he would've gotten that in free agency???

Brice McCain just got 2 years / 2.2 per from Tennessee in free agency, and McCain is nowhere near as good as Gay.

It's nice to see us keep our stability while all of our division rivals are getting looted and pillaged

Yeah, he could've gotten that in FA too. He's definitely much better than McCain. I wouldn't have expected him to get any more than 9-10 mil total on a 3 year deal tho. The 1.5 mil less might be worth it to him tho since he's already seen that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. He fits well here and will have a much better chance at seeing all of that money here than he would elsewhere

Glad they kept him around. Still need a FA Corner. I think Cockrell has potential. Like to see the secondary become a strength.
