We know they aren't going to sign the big money free agents, but they may try to sign one or two second tier players. I would take a look at Leodis Mckelvin CB released by Buffalo, he used to be a return guy on special teams also.

He signed a franchise tender for the Rams. He's not going to be a free agent this season.

This is a tough question. I doubt we are looking at "core" players, but rather guys that can be good role player on our D for a solid price. Weddle would fit that bill perfectly. He might be a bit more pricey, but he would be a 2-3 year upgrade at S and would allow us to develop a safety we draft this year to be a starter down the road. Rahim Moore as a spot starter until our draft pick becomes the guy wouldn't be awful either. I've heard names like McLeod and Quddus too, but idk as much about them or what their market value is.

As for CB's I'm looking at a similar type of player. Gay would be a great re-signing for us. Maybe we try for a big name like Amukamura or Janoris Jenkis, but Leon Hall, Casey Heyward, or Patrick Robinson make more sense to me. Heyward is younger but at 28 and 31 respectively Robinson and Hall would be shorter term solutions until we draft a guy worthy of the #1 role. We will certainly be drafting another corner this year early, so a solid vet makes sense while we get younger at the position with the new pick Golson and Cockrell.

Taking another look at the saftey pool, I've decided that I'll add the two KC safeties Branch and Adullah as good options as well as Baccari Rambo and Reggie Nelson. A short contract for Nelson to play cover free safety for us would be great. We wouldn't have to hurry our draft pick into the lineup and I still think he has 2-3 more really good years.

Your right about not signing "core" guys. But Eric Weddle could be a core guy. He's a great locker room presence and the players on the Chargers are really upset about him leaving because he brings that element to their team.

A player like Weddle could be HUGE for us. Add some talent and add Weddle also and we might have some real cohesion back their in the secondary for the first time in a long time.

I'm also kinda watching to see what Charles Johnson does. We need some viable rotation at the DE position and he could give us that. Plus a steadying veteran experience too.

I'll bring TE up. Jared Cook I heard brought up although I saw he has an 8 mill cap hit which I had previously thought it was 3 million (that is obviously out of our price range) but looking at others: Jermaine Gresham is a 3 mill cap hit, Marcedes Lewis and Vernon Davis might have a year left in them. Garret Graham could be available (not too familiar with Graham). Martellus Bennett was made available via trade yesterday, not sure if that would be stretching our price or what we would have to give up.

This is the name I want right here, this may not be a popular statement but I would like him over Gay. Another name I would like to add is Travis Benjamin and use him as a 5th wr and our answer to punt return. A few things about this guy is when your an offensive team you have to make sure you have weapons and with the draft weak at this position and us having a need at punt returner this is a nice fit.
I know we don't have the money for this but I would love to bring in Chad Greenway, this could be both Harrison and Jones last season and if we could get Greenway for a 3-4 year deal that would be nice. Heck I am good with cutting Jones and bring Greenway in........
Give me one of these guys at CB: Powers, Jenkins, Lane, Wright or McKelvin....if we are gonna spend some money I want Smith.

S is a place where I feel we are gonna spend, Weddle or IIoka would be nice. I need more info on Quddus and Senjedo but what I have read makes me feel like they are a nice fit.

The good news for us is that there are a lot of good corners and safeties hitting free agency this year. Guys like Sean Smith, Janoris Jenkins and Casey Heyward will likely be out of reach, but those next tier guys could be affordable. Here are a few guys under 30 who could be candidates for reasonable deals:

Corner: Patrick Robinson (28) - resurrected his career in San Diego; Prince Amukamra (27) - long corner who can cover and tackle, and will be less expensive than his ability level due to injury history (a bit of a gamble); Nolan Carroll (29) - probably more a a 2-3 year contract guy, he's not great and shouldn't be overpaid, but he's better at corner than anyone we put on the field last season.

Safety: Tashaun Gipson (25) - good player who had a bad season due to injury and having to play corner due to other teammates' injuries; George Iloka (26) - he may be more expensive than we can afford, but it's worth trying; Rodney McLeod (26) - has been quietly solid in St. Louis; Isa Abdul-Quddus (27) - I honestly haven;t watched much of him, but he is generating buzz as a late blooming, starting quality safety; Walter Thurmond (29) - has a bit of an injury history, but is a very solid player who could be worth a 2-3 year contract.

Of these guys, I'm most intrigued by Gipson. He was a pro bowler in 2013 in his second season, and had 11 interceptions over 2 years in '13 and '14. Going into last season, the NFL players rated him as the 67th best player in the league in their annual poll (NFL Network's Top 100). Last year he fought an injury, and played a lot of corner because of other injuries in the Browns' defensive backfield. So, we have a pro bowl safety who is 25 years old, and played corner at a higher level than at least one of our starting corners last season even though he's a safety by trade. He covers well. He tackles well. He makes plays on the ball. He is definitely worth a hard look. If we get him, it would probably push Mitchell into the box more, but I'm not sure that's a bad thing.

I like the idea of McKelvin. He played CB and a good return guy. He made the switch to Safety and played fairly well when asked to play there. He offered to take a substantial pay cut to stay in Buffalo because he loved it even though some fans torched his lawn and vandalized his property. He's a loyal man. I think he'd he a solid addition.

I saw the Bears are interested in shopping him around. 5 million a year for his current salary I believe.

The Steelers may have a tough time signing a player who seems to be a good fit, when teams like the Jaguars and Raiders have a lot of cap room to overpay for these guys.

But I think the Jags and Raiders will use their money on top end free agents. We might have a shot at McKelvin. And you've got to factor in that at this point in his career, he wants to win and be part of the playoffs. It looks like he could be a good fit.

The Steelers should take a look at Colts TE Colby Fleener, they re-signed their other TE Dwayne Allen to a big contract.

It's been a decade since we've been on the lookout for a tight end, other than a blocking backup here and there. Weird.

I like Fleener and he is one that I mentioned as a guy I would like to sign, but after thinking more about it is he really much different the James? I like the signings we had yesterday they didn't cost us a whole lot, I am fine with Fleener if he don't cost us a lot. I am hoping he spend some money at CB/S so I am fine not spending here at the TE spot and drafting a guy. I like this class of TE's some don't but I think there are 5 real solid guys and another 5-6 that are a good fit. Oh and let me add I also feel James can handle the job, so I feel we are looking for a 2nd TE. jmo

    Free agent targets

    Safeties:
Weddle - if he's willing to do something reasonable in a 3 year / 15 million kind of range, sign me up. But if he's looking to cash in big, we are out
Abdul-Quddus - the market for Safeties is tough to predict. But he'd be my "steelers" target.
George Iloka - good fit, but probably looking for a Kam/Morgan type contract at SS. And we can't afford that.
Tyvon Branch - Gimme anyone in the KC secondary.

    Corners:
Sean Smith - Probably way too rich for us... but what if? What if the market isn't there for top dollar? What if he could be had for 5 yrs / 7 million per? Thats what DRCromartie got at nearly the same age.
Janoris Jenkins - Probably too rich for us, but same as above?
Casey Heyward - Perfect fit for our system,
Leodis McKelvin - Probably affordable, but he's 30, safety versatility a plus.
Josh Robinson - Missed most of last season, but there is a full skillset here and he's only 25 yrs old
    Morris Claiborne - Affordable, reclamation

    Edge Rushers
Chris Long - Maybe injuries will scare teams away, maybe playing for a contender will sway him. I'd be looking at him as a Nickel package edge rusher.
Jason Jones - Maybe the cheaper version of what I'm looking for in Long, a Nickel package Edge rusher

    5 Tech backups:
Al Woods - Bring him back. He'll be cheap. He played the versatile backup Dline role very well
Chris Canty - I've wanted him since his draft year. At 33, he can provide valuable minutes
Alex Carrington - instead we got Cam Thomas last time around, time to make amends

    DT/NT
Steve McClendon - But DON'T pay market value. Players like McClendon are NOT going to have a lot of options in free agency. Save cap space, keep him cheap.

    Tight End
Jermaine Gresham - While everyone is busy looking for Heath's replacement, I'll be busy looking for Spaeth's.

    Guards:
Ramon Foster - We should REALLY REALLY REALLY re-sign Foster.
Patrick Omameh - Bucs were stupid to cut him. Not sure what his status in Chicago, but what an athlete, would love to see him in our zone scheme.

    Let's just face it:

After the dust settles and all the big money guys are gone, that's when our FO will go into effect and see who got left out of the big money musical chairs game. LOL.
