If the right DB isn't on the board for us at 25, I hope we look at some more traditional 43 DEs. Given our nature as a Nickel defense, it will help us bend the edge without giving up size in the stopping the run out of the Nickel.

Who do you prefer and why?

(Granted, Ogbah is very likely off the board when we pick)

I didn't catch many Oklahoma State games, so I watched the Baylor game on draft player breakdown. Here's what I saw and why I prefer Dodd. Ogbah seemed very slow in recognition. He was often turned sideways or with his back to the LOS when being blocked. He seemed content to be pushed up the arc and out of the way. I didn't see the effort/drive on a lot of plays, very similar to my thoughts on Calhoun (MSU). The plays he seemed to take interest in were nice but they were spaced far apart. He does tackle with an attitude though.

Dodd seems to play so much faster and never seems content to be blocked out of the play. He seems to do whatever it takes to bring down the ballcarrier. I didn't catch many Clemson games either, mostly playoffs. I liked what I saw even though he's undersized for our typical DE. But the guy gets after it and Butler could use him in all sorts of packages.

So, I'll preface this by saying that I've barely started watching film yet, so any impressions are preliminary. That said, last week I watched a couple of games by Ogbah, and was extremely unimpressed. I found myself wondering why he's even a first round prospect. He looks slow, and doesn't seem to do anything to disengage if he doesn't win at the snap. I just don't see him being a dynamic pass rusher at the NFL level. Dodd I have only seen when watching Clemson games on Saturdays (and the CFB playoffs) so I haven't watched him in isolation. However my impression watching games was positive. He shows up on game day.

Vernon Butler of La Tech had a good showing at the Senior Bowl, he's a 325 lb DT probably not a first rounder though.

Interesting. I think Calhoun is very overrated. As someone who was very fearful of a projected Jarvis Jones pick (Weak first step, no twitch, no bend), I have the same fears of Calhoun looking like a Steeler pick.

On the other hand, I see much more athleticism in Ogbah (I think he's going to measure very well at the combine). I'm a big believer in raw combine measurables when it comes to edge rushers (combining 10 yd, broad, 3 cone, etc). I'll be looking for some of your call outs, specifically around taking plays off (when i get back in to individual game breakdown).

With Dodd, there's simply nothing I don't like about his game. Love it. However, playing against RTs, and with Shaq drawing so much attention... it's a little concerning. I want to see the athletic measurables match the tape. Again, the combine is critical.

I have to admit I am not to big of believer in all measurables, I want to see
certain things out of positions. IE, all OL must bench 30. I want FOOTBALL PLAYERS,
that are not lazy, know how to play the game.AND PLAY WITH PASSION/ and have a BIG MOTOR.AB have ideal measurables for a WR? But he certainly has passion and plays with it and know's the game of football. All players must want to HIT and enjoy contact.

Just read up on these guys on NFL.com draft profiles and that's basically what was mentioned about each one. Don't think I'll be watching any video for myself this year so will have to rely on what the media feeds me.

At this point, from everything I've read, I would prefer Dodd mainly because of his consistency and no-quit motor. I like that Ogbah was the focus of attention on that defense, unlike Dodd, but the overall Ogbah effort turns me off.
